my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 22:59 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah that's exactly what i have

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 22:59 (fourteen years ago) link

what's the problem you're having?

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i get some coffee ground to dust and other coffee like the size of 1/4 bean. in the same batch. and i'm not putting too much in. it wouldn't be so bad if it was drip but it comes through the mesh of the french press thing when it's fine like that.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

please help omar

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I've never used a coffee grinder. Does buying whole beans and using one really make it that much better?

\(^o\) (/o^)/ (ENBB), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:04 (fourteen years ago) link

with a french press, you are "supposed to" use the coarsest grind ... i know my grinder doesn't have any settings. There are fancy supermarkets that have grinders with different settings. I love these things.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i think it would because i buy them whole and grind them in the store and it's always best the first 2 days or so, and that's what experts say. but no it's not that bad for the rest of the 1.5-2 weeks a pound lasts me. dunno.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:07 (fourteen years ago) link

i think i could figure out how to make it grind coarse (i usually just counted to 6 or 7) if the grind was consistent. but it's not.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:09 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, my advice would be to take it to the store and stealthily use their machines.

*grabs toolbox*

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:10 (fourteen years ago) link

i've never had problems with mine, i usually make about four cups in the morning so i scoop out about four spoonfuls of coffee beans and grind them for 6-7 seconds.

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:11 (fourteen years ago) link

does it sound normal when it's grinding? any weird noises?

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:12 (fourteen years ago) link

hmmm. how you brew it?

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link

sounds totally normal

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:13 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, my advice would be to take it to the store and stealthily use their machines.

haha i always think about this

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:15 (fourteen years ago) link

didn't you say in another thread that you have a large purse? That'd be perfect.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i use a french press too, and i gave up on ineptly grinding my own beans and get them ground at the store when i buy them. i buy a kilo every two weeks and it doesn't deteriorate especially and it's much simpler.

estela, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:17 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah :(

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

i wish i could have some coffee right now! but i'll be up till 2 if i do

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a 2 cup french press and a larger-sized percolator ... the percolator, for some reason, probably due to needing to be scrubbed, will brew half coffee and half hot water, so I'll pour the water back in through the grounds compartment, which is annoying and inconvenient.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

however, it only does this when I use it and not when the bf uses it.

my policy is that coffee is an aid and should not be difficult.

estela, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:27 (fourteen years ago) link

the french press fits my policy that everything should be a struggle

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i also sometimes forget i put hot water in it and don't remember until 15 minutes later (you're supposed to wait just 4 minutes). still good!

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

wait is that $6 for 16 oz. of french press coffee?!

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

the french press reassures me that I can still have coffee if the electricity goes out.

also, I've developed a pleasant morning routine of smoking a cigarette out the kitchen window to time the wait before plunging.

i'm like theresa, i've had the same cheap coffee grinder for like 10 years with no problem.

i've never understood the thing about using a coarse grind for a french press. well i understand that you don't want the grounds to seep through the screen but whenever i try a coarse grind, the coffee tastes weak. so i grind it fine and it doesn't really clog up the filter and the coffee is good. i also tend to let the water sit way too long before pushing the plunger down

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

the coarse grind/french press thing was something i learned from an ex-boyfriend who was indoctrinated with this while working at starbucks.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:34 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah you don't have to do it the coarsest but i do one tick back from coarse and it's pretty strong. what annoys me about the cheap grinder is so many beans don't get ground up enough. i can deal with a little mud. i think i'm just the only person in the world who can't use a coffee grinder properly.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i think the coarsest is for turkish and the second coarsest is french press ...

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

no turkish is really fine! powdery

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

the machines at the supermarket just have pictures

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

i think the second coarsest is usually meant for percolator
