it probably meant higher than that, but i imagine it's still the best haute mex in NY. consider getting the huitlacoche dumplings.

So recommend me some good cheap places to eat within a reasonable walk of Brooklyn Heights/Borough Hall, and maybe also a couple of more expensive but highly worth it places.

Fatoosh on Hicks at Atlantic is good middle eastern takeout (i survived one winter on their lentil soup). Actually almost all of the middle eastern places on Atlantic are good and worth trying, I just always went to Fatoosh cause it was close and very very good.

The supreme slice (fresh mozz and basil) at My Little Pizzeria on Court St is good.

Montague St Bagels are some of the best in nyc.

Henry's End on Henry St is fancy and supposed to be really good.

More of a walk, but Hanco's on Bergen and Smith has good vietnamese sandwiches.

I think the most haute-Mexican place I've eaten at is Mi Cocina in the West Village. I thought it was a bit weird that they give you bread while you're waiting for your food, instead of the traditional chips & salsa - but it goes with the tablecloth & wine glasses ambiance.

ooh i have to try Fatoosh! have you had the fatoosh salad from Fatoosh? it better be good ;)

yes the fatoosh salad is quite good. tey make excellent pitas.

Went to sakagura last night, food a little hit and miss but the hits were awesome, highly recommend the Kimchi-don set (shaimi and kimchi mixed together over rice), Buta Kakuni (melt in the mouth stewed pork belly), and some roast duck that I forget the name of. All washed down with sake tasting sets, very easy to drink and spend a lot in there, attentive waitress who was able to tell something about each sake. All finished off with black sesame creme brule which was fabulous.

buta kakuni is one of my favorite things ever.

I wd try Fatoosh's lentil soup, I like lentils. For Mid-Eastern over there I usually hit the Bedouin Tent but that's just familiarity -- it IS pretty good, but I'm not sure it's The Best. Freshly baked flatbread, though.

The merguez sandwhich from Beduin Tent is a disgusting, delicious mess of meat and I love it.

Thanks for the recommendation. I did get them, and they were great. My seared tuna entree was also rather good. I probably should have ordered the guacamole "medium" rather than "mild" though, because the mild was very mild.

ya bedouin tent is ok. we get it at work a lot. it could definitely improve on certain dishes -- to me it's more like a relatively cheap/standard option, as opposed to omg delicious.

but this is pretty otm:

went to Dressler for my b-day, it was good

had some great Maine oysters and a pork chop / pork belly entree

recently: Dumont remains heavenly, tho dessert wasn't great. Flatbush Farm had good ingredients but isn't doing great things with them. brunch at August wasn't very seasonal other than the name, but was awesome.

it's still going? lived across the street from this place in the early-mid 90s and it seemed like the best mexican in new york at that point, predating the influx of authentic taquerias etc. as far as haute mexican goes has anybody tried Pompano in the east 40s? went there a couple years ago and the seafood was good if pricey.

i still havent been to dressler...

Crema on 17th is haute Mexican. not bad but a little fussy or something, I enjoyed but wasn't knocked out.

wouldn't go out of my way for this place but Zona Rosa on 56th bet 5&6th is real good and relatively inexpensive for midtown if you're stuck for a meal in that tourist/business hell zone.

that new place James a couple blocks away from there on Carlton (formerly Sorrel) is good, I've only had a couple small plates there so far

what i've eaten at the farm, i loved.

for some reason the descriptions of flatbush farm are completely cracking me up right now

esp. gabb's, which sounds intriguingly poetic :D

i did have a very good entree and there was one element in a dish that was fairly interesting, if a little much. i'm not sure i've sampled enough to say i like stonehome better, but i could probably do that on their respective drinks attitudes alone.

although the scoop as of late is stonehome's service has been choppy, and the menu, somewhat redundant?

Ed - there is a really good vegetarian korean place right there (I know that sounds suspect, but I love it and am a huge carnivore) called hangawi- its a little expensive and fancy if you're just looking for a quick lunch tho

nybc is okay. you're not that far from molly's (22nd and 2nd), which makes one of the best burgers in the city imo.

tiffin wallah, chennai garden, saravanaas are all good veg indian. kalustyan's has a cafe on the second floor, where you can get really tasty, enormous sandwiches and middle eastern platters. right near there is a branch of rice, but i've never tried it.

mishima on 31st and lex is pretty good for sushi, and a few doors down saburi (which is japanese-style chinese food) is supposed to have good cold noodles.

i love kalustyan's and am excited that's nearby. i tried rice yesterday and it was pretty good too.

la posada, on 3rd ave around 26th/27th, is fast "mexican" that's a step above the fresca tortilla places. they have a rice/beans/grilled meat plate that's a good, quick option.

l'annam (vietnamese) has a branch near there, and while most of the food is mediocre, the grilled pork chops are great and a great deal at lunch.

xpost - todaro's is good, but i wouldn't go out of the way for it. for sandwiches, this place is better and closer to where she'll be:
