If Feedbacker is my favorite and Akuma drives me nuts, what do I need next? Flood? I have and like Dronevil too...

I'm glad to see folks checking out Heavy Rocks and realising it pisses all over the pitchfork approved Pink and Smile albums.

If you look under singles, it lists Japanese Heavy Rock Hits, Vol. 1 to be released on Southern Lord on 9/29. Is it the same thing? There's nothing about it on the Southern Lord site, and nothing else comes up about the album on google.

Picked up the 1st "Heavy Rock Hits" 45 the other day. Doesn't sound a damn thing like Heavy Rocks. Sounds like the band actually playing the kind of fucked up heavy pop that Kurihara producerized em into on the Japanese version of Smile. Good but not great.

That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Thursday, 8 October 2009 05:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Ishihara. You Ishihara produced Smile. Pretend I said that.

ishihara and kurihara were both in white heaven, bro, it's okay to confuse them.

Boris Collaboration With Ian Asbury Announced

Southern Lord proudly announces an incredible collaboration between label artists Boris and Ian Asbury of The Cult and The Doors! This finely-crafted four-song mini release, simply entitled BXI, was tracked and mixed in Tokyo in late April. Asbury's vocals are a perfect match for Boris's straightforward, laid-back, but still raw and imaginative songwriting constructed for the EP; another intriguing display within the band's ever-morphing, extensive résumé of releases, tours and collaborations.

To see official CD, LP and digital release this September via Southern Lord, BXI will showcase the already unclassifiable rock of Boris in an entirely new light, and shows a new side one of rock and roll's most notorious singers. The release features three new original tracks, as well as a cover of The Cult's song "Rain", ethereally vocalized by Boris guitarist Wata. Art and design for the release was commissioned to Stephen O'Malley (Ideologic.org, SUNNO))), etc.).

Pitchfork briefly interrogated Boris drummer Atsuo about this collaboration this week. Check out this exclusive piece on the EP and find out how this collaboration came to light: http://pitchfork.com/news/39000-boris-team-with-the-cults-ian-astbury/

This past weekend, Ian Asbury made an unannounced appearance with Boris at the band's performance at Sydney, Australia's Vivid LIVE appearance, blowing fans away with this unexpected set which showcased some of the material from the BXI EP as well as a cover of the classic "The End", by The Doors.

BXI EP Track Listing:
1. Teeth and Claws
2. We are the Witches
3. Rain
4. Magickal Child

Giving a listen to the EP now -- first couple of songs don't quite work for me, comes across as Astbury fronting a band trying to be the Cult. The "Rain" cover is pleasant, though, and the last one is the best, all of Astbury's typical bravura over a big melodramatic slow burn, sounds like it should be the end of a movie.

I bought this last night at the Boris show. And I like it. And I don't particularly enjoy the Cult, so it works on a different level and I'm not sure how. Cover song's great. Fun little stopgap EP, I suppose!

Stormy Davis, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty sure he's an official member at least of the touring band. He's been there the last three times I've seen them.

Yup, he's been touring with them since the first time I saw Boris in 2007.

So would this BXI EP have been better with a different guest vocalist? I was trying to come up with another frontman who could have done a better job - Glenn Danzig, Chris Cornell - but I think the songs are just weak.

Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Monday, 16 August 2010 12:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Yup, I'd say it's the songwriting. Last song's decent, and the "Rain" cover is pretty good, but the rest is throwaway.

A bit but not that much. Go, and I'll buy you a beer there.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Monday, 5 November 2012 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

That was a litt e misleading in that at first I thought Boris was recording an entire Loveless tribute by themselves a la Japancakes. Still I'm actually quite the sucker for Japanese tribute albums, since they often tend to have a least one really off the wall interpretation on them and it's been a while since I've seen any new ones arise.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 17:54 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but by the time i shared the status with ned I had realised it was only the one song. I must admit I would have loved it if they had done the whole album.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 6 November 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

On the other hand, Shonen Knife also contribute a song on there, which seems a bit strange.

Been re-listening to Akuma No Uta and Pink a lot in the last few weeks and I've enjoyed them a hell of a lot. It's been a while. I didn't keep up after Pink - which of the last few albums are most worth my time and money please?

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:24 (ten years ago) link

Oh I have Rainbow and Altar as well. I should find them in "the box" in the attic.

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:27 (ten years ago) link

What is with all these 2011 albums?

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:27 (ten years ago) link

Smile [Japanese version, please] is great. I never got into any of those three albums that all came out at the same time, but I was happy when "Pary Boy" came on unexpectedly when I was listening to a failed compilation of mostly year end favorites I had put together. I still haven't heard the album that came out this year.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 9 August 2013 12:57 (ten years ago) link

Second the Japanese version of Smile, a less extreme and more poppy version of Akuma and Pink but still heavy and Satan worshipping.

Never bothered much with the 2011 trilogy, but if you like '80s thrash, the full version of "Czechoslovakia" is hella worth tracking down.

May I Call You Jiggleee? (Leee), Friday, 9 August 2013 15:45 (ten years ago) link

"Pary Boy" of course should have been "Party Boy."

"Pary Boy" looks more like a Butthole Surfers title: "No it's really supposed to be 'Pary Boy!'"
