Just as music can be found in nature, through the song of the whales, indeed there too can be Christian Heavy Metal in today's musical climate. As long as there is an audience to receive the sounds, there will can be any kind of music. Although, I imagine in would be very difficult to synthesize the two extremes of heavy metal, which is often thought of as dark and negative, and Christianity, which holds Christ as the light of humanity. Essentially, these two factors seem to balance each other out. For one to successfully implement positive religious lyrics in a song that has dark and dreary overtones sends a message to me that even through the darkness in the heavy metal music there can be light, which can be made analogous to Christ illuminating the darkness of the world for all to see, it depends on one's interpretation and experience of the music at hand. I wonder if there is mosh pitting at these types of concerts?, that would seem rather hypocritical concerning the messages the Church sends, however, judge not lest you be judged in terms of practicing religion. Apparently there is still room for the oddity of Opus Dei in today's religious climate, so why not Christian Heavy Metal in the music spectrum? One may question if the words are screamed and sound angry, will it change the innate message of the song? I do not believe so, because words, regardless of how they are spoken, can only be backed with right action. If the bands adhere to the doctrine of their religion and are true to their intention as musicians, then I believe they can be classified as such. Take for example, South Park, when Cartman attempts to form the Christian Rock Band, Faith + 1. Although his audience received his "religious" message (even though it was satirized by trey and matt, haha "I want to get down on my knees and please you Jesus") and he won his myrrh record (which he then rejected and lost his followers), his intention was not to create music for its own sake and to praise God, but to receive monetary gain. Any band in any genre, not just Christian Heavy Metal, that follows Cartman's path is not staying true to the purpose of music, and I believe there is no place for bands like that in today's musical climate; however, we may never know what one's intention is throughout the duration of their career. Because I am not a Christian Metal Head, it is hard for me to define what Christian Metal means to one who likes it so much to consider themselves a head. I can assume that in general terms it is just like any other experience one has between ones self and ones religion, using music to connect one to the other in the form of praise, which in this case may seem a little angrier. There must be some sort of successful connection made between the audience and God using Heavy Metal as the mediator because people to continue their indulgence in Christian Heavy Metal. Music that allows a religious experience will be different for many different kinds of people depending on their background. You can hear the indigenous differences between religious music and even the instruments used of those who practice Judaism and those who practice Christianity. Traditional Christian Music is rooted in western classical and opera sounding music. Today's generation has a tendency to rebell against these traditions, which probably insighted the heavy death metal genre to begin with. For one to inversely use this form of rebellion to bring people, especially those of youth, back to Christianity is fascinating, and indeed must to fit some where in today's spectrum or musical climate.

As Michael Franti Would Say

Everyone Deserves Music
Sweet Music
Even the quite ones in our family
They deserve music

Not just the rich, but the everyday folk
Not just the men, but the women folk
Not just the straight, but they gay and freaky people too
Not just the white folk, but the black, grey, yellow, and blue

Even the sad ones, the lonely ones, they happy ones ain’t the only ones
Everyone deserves music.

Indeed this too includes the Christian Metal Heads.

2) Rockism is the ideology that some popular music is more authentic than others. Originating from the British press in the early 1980s; Rockism is suspicious of the use of non traditional instrumental equipment. This includes both physical and spiritual properties used in the creation of music. Synthesizers and “Easy-Make” tools are frowned upon. The same applies to to “manufactured pop music.” Rocksim proponents argue that such music is created on assembly lines by hired record producers; thus creating soulless and inferior music. Subsequently, all commercialized music is regarded as impure. As stated earlier, this applies to all music, not just rock itself. One may be “Rockist,” yet express a genuine passion for R&B in a “rockist” style. A noted subtext of Rockism states that, at one point in time, “They got it right.” Rockists cite a period of time (generally accepted as the 1960sor 1970s) in which music was in its purest form; namely rock. Although there are many ways to define Rockism, meaning there is no absolute interpretation of it, the overall premise is rock is the norm of popular music.

4) Sufjan Stevens. Although Deerhoof is interesting as well, I find the music difficult to get in touch with. Sufjan Stevens speaks with heart and soul; this is portrayed through both his usage of sound and lyrics. In addition to this, he ventures into the use of various sounds and playing styles with his music. Although the same is true (if not to a greater extent) for Deerhoof; the music feels more like a collage or cut and paste operation of various sounds. Whereas these new and unique sounds may please the ears of some, I find it troublesome. The music is all over the place, and therefore, retains a minimal amount of passion. Although I prefer Sufjan Stevens; both artists are unique and fantastic in their own way. In the end, however, the eye-opening lyrics of Sufjan Stevens topple the whimsical tunes of Deerhoof.

The Ramones - Rocket to Russia (reissue)

2) What is rockism?

What is rockism? Not an answer, but a response: Rockism is a form of ludicrous snobbery in the form of scene trendsetting based on a code of nonsense that nonetheless explains the deteriorization of Aerosmith from Mama Kin to whatever they are now. Musicians play rock quartet/quintet instruments (guitar(s), bass, drums, keys(?)), feign that genius-ness of Bob Dylan with the Band live 1966 period, the fans must face the CBGB's toilets smell to get their fix. More simply, Rockism is a snobbery that "Rock" music is the best kind of music. Radio pop, with its pseudo-individuation, is devalued not for its lack of complexity but for its lack of simplicity. Paradoxically, middle aged "indie band" men are therefore returning to their pop-rock simplicity detroit rock city fonzie roots and singing about high school--the authentic rockist perspective must be young, and preferably ignorant of the "real world." The pseduo-indiviudal has grown up but must grow to be an eternal child, in other words. I find this all very embarrasing.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

I have tried to live Sufjan, but the self-conscious singer-songwriter thing is played out for me at the moment. The giant wings he has been attaching to himself in recent concerts was really the last straw. However, I do enjoy his Christmas club music. Deerhoof, by contrast, is consistently engaging and GENUINELY fun even if they are pretentious as well. That little Japanese chick can really belt it out. The tunes get stuck in my head, so I sing out like her in public sometimes. Just that bit of life experience has added greatly to my self-esteem. And they are getting better, too.

2) What is rockism?

What is rockism? People have their own opinions about music. To try and describe one's favorite music as superior to others is what is commonly meant by rockism. The strict-constructionist definition of rockism is an exaltation of the mythology of '60s and early '70s rock - teenage boys with guitars working out their feelings on paper in the afternoon and shouting them through microphones at night. (The loose-constructionist definition calls rockism an exaltation of any form of music on pseudo-objective grounds.) Rockism usually includes a derisive sneer toward some other form of music, usually whatever is currently popular on the charts.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Why? (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum)

Sufjan Stevens is a failed writer, an expert folder (he can wrestle a fitted sheet into a perfect square), and an admirer of Brahms symphonies. Sufjan admits to having borrowed the concept of Friend Rock from his good friend Sonny Aronson, who admits to having stolen it from his friend Cheryl Botchick (former editor of CMJ New Music Report), who may or may not have gleaned the term from the gossipy pages of NME Magazine, the editors of which often claim to have coined every fleeting and faddish term in the music industry since the 1970s, although we know that just is not true.

Deerhoof on the other hand, is refreshing! And there’s little attention to formal, Berkeley-style musicianship. But their persistent reinvention of their sound, even within individual songs, is reminiscent of the kind of jittery musical unrest that recalls Miles Davis and John Coletrane, and the less smoothly orchestrated output of early King Crimson.

People have judged it because of the meaning behind the term and have considered it "musical racism" All it was , was an opinion. Some people in my own thoughts took it to far when they complained about it.

2) Rockism has several different ideals. One being the idea of criticizing music. Also the idea of that music should be natural. Thus being compared to Stuckism which is where artists that don't paint aren't considered artists. Rockism has been attacked by people saying it's "musical racism" and "straight white male chauvinism." People who are a believer in Rockism like it when they have most freedom in the music process. Thus allowing them to be themselves.

4) Sufjun Stevens hands down. Deerhoof irritated me a long time ago with vocals. Stevens vocals are grand. The guy is a spectacular indie artist. I have found his music to be quite original. I look forward to seeing what he has in store over the years.

Since you misrepresented yourself in regards to playing an instrument, we now have a 6th question for you. Put honesty before brevity.

Oink Admin,

Brian Greene is a really cool guy! I've worked with him off and on for the last four years now. He's more of a friend than a boss. I go camping with him and some of our other friends quite often. If I could bid a job like him, I wouldn't need to work for him. I know how to paint, but he knows how to price a job. He's a good manager, good people skills, fair prices. 2) What is rockism? Rockism is an critical term for the ideology which promotes rock music as the superior genre of Music. Citing values which are specific to rock music such as writing your own songs and playing your own instruments, which are not so important in genres such as disco, pop, Hip Hop and dance music as the most important factors in musical quality. The focus on authenticity amongst rock music means that "manufactured" pop groups are seen as frivolous in comparison. As rock music has traditionally been dominated by white men, some have argued that the ideologies that form rockism are inherently racist. The poptimist movement, therefore, could be seen to mirror the feminist art history promoted by Roszita Parks and Griselda Pollock, which sought to find new contexts for art history, which did not marginalise women artists.

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power http://www.newcenter.com/tastefest/2006/media/photos/MOTORCITY_CASINO_MAIN_STAGE/CAT%20POWER%20&%20THE%20MEMPHIS%20RHYTHM%20BAND.jpg a classic admittedly, but still very lovely.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Deerhoof. While I have, in the past, had time for Sufjan Stevens' Illinois, which at times matches the sweeping ambition that drives it (Sondheim unplugged is my favourite description), the indie rock sugar rush that Deerhoof have plyed across their substantial studio releases, is a firm favourite of mine. The guitar psychotics, arhythmical drums and droning cute-girl vocals take the best pop music apart and put it back together in a way that's crooked, spooky and full of fun neon giddiness. Holy Night Fever is one those songs that you dance to the guitar line for! And their last album was probably the best one yet, if only for Kidz are so Small. The music they make gets better the more it characatures itself.
