There needs to be more space on disc 2 for home demos. If any of them are half as good as the version of 10:15 Saturday Night on the 3IB second disc then we shall be very lucky indeed.

Too many home demos. Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm, I was hoping for more studio out takes rather than live stuff. The Faith and Pornography reissues look very interesting though

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I was also hoping they'd uncover unreleased gems of that era rather than putting out live stuff, but anyway...
Not sure I'll be getting the 17sec one (well not right away, who am I kidding...)

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Too many home demos. Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

Because you end up with things like that dirgey "10:15 Saturday Night".

April has never been further away.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

What Dan said. The various Cure demos I've heard via bootleg or mp3 over the years are really something, whether home or not, while that never heard before "10:15" was just wondrous. Demos for The Top and The Head on the Door = yow!

Hmm, I was hoping for more studio out takes rather than live stuff.

But I can't wait for that! Certainly I've collected enough live shows from that time by now but they were *so freakin' good* at that time -- not that they weren't later either, but my goodness were they on fire.

April has never been further away.

Yes indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

As much as I've loved the live shows I've seen (and I really really have), the best live recording I've heard is a 1980 bootleg.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

You got that Australian show?

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a pretty special live bootleg from the Faith Tour (strasberg?) Good and different versions of a Forest and M.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think the boot I have is Australian and I don't have it with me to check; I want to say it was from Brussels?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks to That New Hub Thing we have, I was able to get a couple of early eighties shows from Teeny the other day. Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago) link

One of my fave is the Cornwall 1983 show, one of the few of that era, where you'd get them oscillate wildly between the Pornography material and their new sound.

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

"april has never been further away" thirded!

two weeks pass...
OK, boys and girls, time to start saving up - April 26th is the release date for those three albums...

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

26th? ARGH. WHY NOT START OF APRIL. That's almost a whole extra month. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:36 (nineteen years ago) link

3 albums = Pornography, Seventeen Seconds, & .... ?

(Confession: I bought the first re-issue, but have yet to listen to it. SHAME.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Faith, you forgetful feeb. But I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude, I know sweet FA about the Cure. Be happy I knew the first two! (& let's cuddle!)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:49 (nineteen years ago) link

WUV.

The order of release was 17, Faith and Pornography, and generally have been grouped as a somewhat unintentional trio by Us Cure Freaks in that after the first album and singles they helped to codify 'goth' Cure as such, getting progressively unsettling and disturbing but each with their own particular aura -- none of the albums really resembles each other while all at the same time still feeling part of a continuum. That the next Cure efforts were the pop bounceback singles "Let's Go to Bed"/"The Walk"/"The Lovecats" underscores Pornography as being the end point of that period.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Ohhhh, I feel a bit faint, unheard of 17/Faith era tunes, group demos etc: Carnage in decent quality, that live Faith B-side, yay.

If anyone wants any early live Cure send us a mail.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh my God, the legendary "A Normal Story" surfaces! 17 Seconds xtras are a bit skint (live, live, live, live, live), but given that I expected slim pickings on all the reissues, I can't complain.

"Charlotte Sometimes" relegated to bonus disc-status shocka.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

a bonus disc is really the only place it belongs though. the first time it ever came out on cd was for standing on a beach right? maybe it was on happily ever after. i don't remember.

it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

It was only on Staring at the Sea, and it wasn't their biggest hit to begni with, but it was a proper single and they've played it live, constantly, since it was released. I know Smith hates the mix and it was the breaking point with Hedges, but there's something about burying a real single at the ass-end of a rarities disc that's unnatural to me.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

06. GOING HOME TIME (studio out-take)
Even though it's on the Faith re-issue, I imagine it's safe to assume this is a demo of "One Hundred Years". (I wonder the "studio demo" of it on the Pornography re-issue is the version on the Fast Forward cassette. I hope so!)

I just got my um "evaluation" copies of the three. I'm not even a hardcore Cure fan, but I'm peeing my pants right now listening to these.

donut debonair (donut), Saturday, 26 March 2005 05:44 (nineteen years ago) link

So how's the "evaluation" going??

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I hate you, Donut Debonair < / Red Meat little girl voice >

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, that's it, I'm ordering these from Ideal Copy RIGHT NOW.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:51 (nineteen years ago) link

Hahahah! I was just thinking that myself, m'friend. (But there's also the Adam Ant reissues and the Fall box and ARGH WHAT A GREAT/EXPENSIVE TIME TO BE ALIVE).

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

ORDER PLACED APRIL 26 CAN'T ARRIVE SOON ENOUGH

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I am shaking my finger sternly at the calendar and shouting "HURRY UP I WANT MY FUCKING POSTER".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 1 April 2005 13:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Hah. I want a photo of you in front of the poster with your eyes bugging out Urkel-style. Or something.

-- The Ghost of Dan Perry (djperr...), January 27th, 2005.**

I finally listened to this properly, and you absolutely right, Dan - the 10:15 Sat Night demo is absolutely fantastic. Whyowhyowhy didn't they use keyboards and this tempo on the released version?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:34 (nineteen years ago) link

:-) And thus happiness is at last had.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

(xpost) I have no idea! I mean, I really like the version that they released but WOW THAT DEMO VERSION!!!!!!!!

It's kind of like how "Two People" >>>>>>> "In Your House", even though I really like "In Your House".

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 13:38 (nineteen years ago) link

"Two People"? Tell me more.

I've been arguing a similar case regarding the demo version of "The Big Hand", which just blows away the studio one.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago) link

I just listened to it again - it *is* fuckin' great. A slight problem though : I can't help mentally superimposing Lol's drunken semi-rolls in the places where they come on the 'real' version.

Another great track on the 3IB reissue is Play With Me.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:06 (nineteen years ago) link

"Two People" is the original version of "In Your House"; there's a live version of it on the Curiosity side of the Concert cassette which is, well, godly. It's the same music but substantially different lyrics, kind of like "Desperate Journalist"/"Grinding Halt" only with all punchability removed.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I keep forgetting that I don't like The Cure much. But I do think they sound much more *alive* in these early small-scale tracks, rather than the bluster of late 80s onwards.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:09 (nineteen years ago) link

AH yes, that's what I thought. Didn't know it was titled "Two People", though.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

You can now hear clips of all three new remasters on the Rhino website.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

!!!!!!!!!!!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:26 (nineteen years ago) link

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD WHY CAN'T IT BE THE 26TH NOW

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Hearing even clips early would ruin the anticipation. I will await the day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Wise words Ned. I shall do the same. Although, if Dan has succumbed to temptation, I urge him to share his impressions.

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:45 (nineteen years ago) link

My impression: Pornography really is the greatest thing they've ever done.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah come on, wait until you hear those "Strange Attraction" home demos...

Baaderonixxxorzh (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually he's waiting on the "Mint Car" a capella home demos.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 7 April 2005 14:52 (nineteen years ago) link

ATTENTION all kindred spirits - AWWW-YEAAAAH:

From the Steve Severin Forum (April 14th 2005) :

"Biggest and best news of the week is that after many, many years I have started talking to Robert Smith about the GLOVE re-mastering. We had a
lovely, long catch-up chat on the phone on Saturday and I'm overjoyed to say that Robert is going to be totally involved in getting the best possible release together. I have suggested that BLUE SUNSHINE falls into the CURE's timeline of reissues as opposed to the BANSHEES and Robert is really happy about that plan. In plain terms as FAITH/17 SECONDS/PORNOGRAPHY are due out at the end of this month - BLUE SUNSHINE
is next!!!!! In the Banshees timeline it would be probably a year away so I'm very excited that we will have the album out in the next 6 months. Robert is currently ploughing through his tapes and between us we think we have enough interesting stuff to make BLUE SUNSHINE a double disc deluxe edition. Universal are up for it too.

We plan to meet up soon over a flagon of cider and go through everything including all the bits of memorabilia that I have kept that will be nice to incorporate into the new artwork. It's going to be a blast! Can't wait......"
