32. When you're lying on your bed and the vinyl is playing while you're reading a book, you're being constantly distracted because you have to switch sides, which is great because who wants to read books anyway? You can read the vinyl liner notes! That's all you need!
33. You can't program or randomize the track order of a vinyl, which is great because the tracks must be listened in the exact order decided by the musicians. It's their art, not yours!

as i said in the "introduce yourself" thread, i just got a record player. i kind of love it, but i'm not sure why, e.g., is it the retro-feel; richer, warmer sound quality; the artwork and packaging of records versus mp3s or discs?
why do you “love vinyl”?

was about to begin a separate thread on this in the new ILV board, but put it here instead. the search-function works well!

hey daniel what record player did you get. i am thinking about upgrading from my horrible record player. i like vinyl mainly cuz it is cheap. or at least some of it is.

dunno, thinking that i'd want to stay under the $300 range? I have no idea how much this stuff costs nowadays. xpost
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:21 (thirteen years ago) link
I like packaging/artwork/sleeve notes/posters/hidden surprises
it sounds great
sometimes (especially in the case of old stuff) it's WAY cheaper
tons of stuff that is either unavailable digitally and/or very expensive/hard to find is much easier to get on vinyl (thinking primarily of country, jazz, reggae, obscure rock/psych stuff, etc.)

i can't find the seller's id i dealt with, who was completely brilliant, but ebay, for vintage (1970's) pioneer, technics, and also nice yamaha turntables won't cost you half of that. picked up a 1970's yamaha a few years ago, still goin' strong
― KC & the sunshine banned (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i should just start trawling ebay i guess?
― tylerw, Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:31 (thirteen years ago) link
my advice:
as far as new turntables...the pro-ject debut III and rega P1 are both $400 and great....
under that, i would probably just scour craigslist and find a good old used turntable and maybe use some of the extra money to buy a good cartridge for it...
― S Beez Wit the Remedy (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 20 October 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link
rega P1

yeah, i gotta get speakers/amplifier etc too. the record player i have now is like a step above a fisher price toy player. used to have a much better set up but it was destroyed. long story.

i recently picked up a great dual cs 505-1 on craigslist for $60 recently...usually if you see the model number do a google search and you'll find discussion on audiophile boards about it
a good quality used one from the 80s will be light years beyond a cheapie

i like vinyl mainly cuz it is cheap. or at least some of it is.
i'll circle back later to say what brand/model i bought, when i get home. but i didn't buy it based on any research. i just decided i wanted one ASAP and went to the first place i knew (a) carried them and (b) was still open at 9PM. that's why i worry if i overspent for a bad model.
as far as price, the place i bought my record-player (spec's music in coral gables) has a small vinyl section. but everything is expensive! it's all, like, $25.00 a record. you say vinyl is cheap?
