pear martinis:men::pomegranate martinis:women?

ian, Saturday, 2 August 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

So recommend me some good cheap places to eat within a reasonable walk of Brooklyn Heights/Borough Hall, and maybe also a couple of more expensive but highly worth it places.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

real men don't drink flavored martinis (but we will mix them for the ladies)

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

flavored "martinis" aren't martinis.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

There are only two sweet drinks I like: mojito and bourbon/ginger.

Most sweet cocktails seem to me like an excuse to spend a lot of money on something that sounds sophisticated but goes down easy as a slurpee.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean nothing wrong with "goes down easy" - but save yourself the trouble and just have a mid-shelf vodka with juice.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

mmm

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I agree w/tehresa. lol chocolate drop "martinis". what's next? peanut butter martinis? tofu martinis? ugh.

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

polish potato vodka martini w/french fry stirrer

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

although my friend's mom infuses her own vodka, so you can makes lemon martinis etc. that qualify as real martinis, just with some flava.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i would like to try making some infusions, but i don't really care for vodka. i generally drink gin martinis.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, i'm not a real man, but i just wanted to try the pear cider in the thing.

gabbneb, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i'd like a pear drink as long as it was not too sweet. i had one at cafeteria once that was ok, but could have been less sweet.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the one i had last night was really not that sweet, which is why i liked it. and it had a bit of cinnamon on the rim which gave it some spice.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Maya is a wonderful, if expensive, haute Mexican place on the southern tip of the Upper East Side. One of NY's better restaurants

Cool - we're going there for my wife's birthday. I like pretty much all Mexican food from cheap & authentic to cheap & inauthentic to the more expensive varieties.

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

did I say that? i don't know about the latter statement, but it's definitely good and interesting, though I dunno the impact of the guy's opening an SF (?) place.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I think that was you, yes. No back-pedaling now. "One of NY's better restaurants" only means in the top 50th percentile right?

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

it probably meant higher than that, but i imagine it's still the best haute mex in NY. consider getting the huitlacoche dumplings.

Fatoosh on Hicks at Atlantic is good middle eastern takeout (i survived one winter on their lentil soup). Actually almost all of the middle eastern places on Atlantic are good and worth trying, I just always went to Fatoosh cause it was close and very very good.

The supreme slice (fresh mozz and basil) at My Little Pizzeria on Court St is good.

Montague St Bagels are some of the best in nyc.

Henry's End on Henry St is fancy and supposed to be really good.

More of a walk, but Hanco's on Bergen and Smith has good vietnamese sandwiches.

I think the most haute-Mexican place I've eaten at is Mi Cocina in the West Village. I thought it was a bit weird that they give you bread while you're waiting for your food, instead of the traditional chips & salsa - but it goes with the tablecloth & wine glasses ambiance.

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh i have to try Fatoosh! have you had the fatoosh salad from Fatoosh? it better be good ;)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yes the fatoosh salad is quite good. tey make excellent pitas.

mizzell, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Went to sakagura last night, food a little hit and miss but the hits were awesome, highly recommend the Kimchi-don set (shaimi and kimchi mixed together over rice), Buta Kakuni (melt in the mouth stewed pork belly), and some roast duck that I forget the name of. All washed down with sake tasting sets, very easy to drink and spend a lot in there, attentive waitress who was able to tell something about each sake. All finished off with black sesame creme brule which was fabulous.

Ed, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:25 (fifteen years ago) link

buta kakuni is one of my favorite things ever.

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I wd try Fatoosh's lentil soup, I like lentils. For Mid-Eastern over there I usually hit the Bedouin Tent but that's just familiarity -- it IS pretty good, but I'm not sure it's The Best. Freshly baked flatbread, though.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

The merguez sandwhich from Beduin Tent is a disgusting, delicious mess of meat and I love it.

dan selzer, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

consider getting the huitlacoche dumplings.

Thanks for the recommendation. I did get them, and they were great. My seared tuna entree was also rather good. I probably should have ordered the guacamole "medium" rather than "mild" though, because the mild was very mild.

o. nate, Monday, 11 August 2008 21:40 (fifteen years ago) link

ya bedouin tent is ok. we get it at work a lot. it could definitely improve on certain dishes -- to me it's more like a relatively cheap/standard option, as opposed to omg delicious.

but this is pretty otm:

went to Dressler for my b-day, it was good

had some great Maine oysters and a pork chop / pork belly entree

dmr, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

recently: Dumont remains heavenly, tho dessert wasn't great. Flatbush Farm had good ingredients but isn't doing great things with them. brunch at August wasn't very seasonal other than the name, but was awesome.

gabbneb, Monday, 11 August 2008 22:10 (fifteen years ago) link

the most haute-Mexican place I've eaten at is Mi Cocina in the West Village.

it's still going? lived across the street from this place in the early-mid 90s and it seemed like the best mexican in new york at that point, predating the influx of authentic taquerias etc. as far as haute mexican goes has anybody tried Pompano in the east 40s? went there a couple years ago and the seafood was good if pricey.

m coleman, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 00:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i still havent been to dressler...

phil-two, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Crema on 17th is haute Mexican. not bad but a little fussy or something, I enjoyed but wasn't knocked out.

wouldn't go out of my way for this place but Zona Rosa on 56th bet 5&6th is real good and relatively inexpensive for midtown if you're stuck for a meal in that tourist/business hell zone.

I always forget to qualify Manhattan -- the new outer boro -- on my restaurant picks

Manhattan -- the new outer boro

haha

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 01:40 (fifteen years ago) link

wow, someone photoshop time out cover please

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 02:21 (fifteen years ago) link

Flatbush Farm had good ingredients but isn't doing great things with them.

yeah I kinda agree with that

that new place James a couple blocks away from there on Carlton (formerly Sorrel) is good, I've only had a couple small plates there so far

dmr, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

what i've eaten at the farm, i loved.

UGH STILL need to go to dressler again, it's like my food fantasy of the year

I've had one so-so meal at FF and one pretty good

dmr, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

so pretty in there

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i like robertas in bushwick

phil-two, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

ff menu looks a little... heavy? i don't know if that's the right word. dark? like, rabbit, duck... it seems very... something. not *quite* summery, maybe?

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

gamey?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i know what u mean

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

there are very-seasonal components on the menu, but the dishes are far from expressive of the season

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that sounds sort of what i was going for.

for some reason the descriptions of flatbush farm are completely cracking me up right now

esp. gabb's, which sounds intriguingly poetic :D

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i did have a very good entree and there was one element in a dish that was fairly interesting, if a little much. i'm not sure i've sampled enough to say i like stonehome better, but i could probably do that on their respective drinks attitudes alone.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:12 (fifteen years ago) link

although the scoop as of late is stonehome's service has been choppy, and the menu, somewhat redundant?

also i can't get past farm's beautiful dark wood, ugh i luv
