According to Amazon UK it's now been deleted - there still appear to be several new copies up for grabs on Amazon Marketplace, mind. And the re-issue of Another Setting only has part of Amigos Em Portugal as bonus tracks, yes?

one month passes...
So this is all ILM's got to say about the new lp "Keep Breathing"? I've seen some 5-star reviews but curious about the lack of reaction here.

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Friday, 3 March 2006 14:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't heard it yet!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:20 (eighteen years ago) link

I got "Return of.." back in the day (not the sandpaper one tho), always loved it.

I got "LC" recently, wasn't that bothered.

What's best, if I like "Return" more than else?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Is 'Return of' different from LC?

Le Baaderonixx de Clignancourt (baaderonixx), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:37 (eighteen years ago) link

the most recent album I've heard is "someone else's party" which I think is pretty good, with at least one track (the one that samples Jurado) being easily one of the best songs he's ever done. Is the new album different at all?

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

you need to listen to LC more. "Return of" preceded LC by a year. Do you have the Factory Too reissues with the bonus tracks? Track those down for the bonus tracks. If you like your repetitive jazz licks with techno, try on Obey the Time. Pick up Sporadic Recordings double disc for more experimental/unfinished cuts. The more you hear, the more you like.

biz, Friday, 3 March 2006 16:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes I do.

Hmm. OK.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Me thinks Keep Breathing is rather dull. Would fit right in with 'modern' ECM (gabarek/molvaer/(gawd beware) jarrett) releases. I think it gets all those positive reviews mainly because of 2004's Tempus Fugit seemed like some kind of a departure -- whom i found to be very much appealing, and that even though it traded, by some extend, complexity in for accessability. By that terms Keep Breathing continues that path, but focusses more on the safe bet, like say, the most likely target group (which seems to be into modern ECM releases by accident). But having said that, i rarely found anything post 1983 on ECM enjoyable. Now for the question: Could Durutti Column be considered as modern jazz?

b0ring, Friday, 3 March 2006 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a bit disappointing after "someone else's party" and "tempus fugit."

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:51 (eighteen years ago) link

LC never did much for me, either, despite loving most of the rest of the early stuff.

Bimble The Nimble (Bimble...), Friday, 3 March 2006 21:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Is 'Return of' different from LC?

Return Of... is completely instrumental, and is mostly guitar and drum machine, with a couple of tracks featuring live drums. It's quite short and sweet - only about half an hour (CD bonus tracks aside). I've never read an actual explanation of why Side 2 of the original LP was half the length of Side 1 - the label credits Guy Debord for inspiration, so I assumed it was some form of Situationist prank. Anyway, the CD is definitely worth owning even if only for the added bonus of "Lips That Would Kiss" and "Madeleine". There are few better arguments for bonus tracks than the re-issues of Return Of..., and, better yet, LC.

That what you wanted to know? :)

Lotta Continua (Damian), Saturday, 4 March 2006 00:06 (eighteen years ago) link

What was Sleep Will Come from? It's a bonus track on Return Of, and amazing.

ha. I have that on CD! It's credited to Jez and Vini. How I never put two together...I've had that crepuscule CD since college and love much of it but never listen straight through. Why I only fell in love with that song after getting Return Of recently...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 4 March 2006 01:07 (eighteen years ago) link

The bonus tracks on the CD reissue of Return Of... are to die for.

-- Bimble (grippledybu...), September 8th, 2004.

This includes Sleep Will Come! Which was (you're right) from that Brussels comp. Life is a beautiful thing. Are you going to make me pull those bonus tracks out HMMM?

Well why not, any excuse, really.

My friend is doing a DJ night in New York at this very moment, he does a night that is totally Manchester music. It's named Resurrection after the Stone Roses tune. He is spinning records right at this very moment. It's hard to believe.

I could talk for thousands and thousands of years about bands from Manchester exclusively, it is ridiculous. If that isn't the center of the musical universe I don't know what is.

I think that's the show where the clip on the Factory Vids collection is from, no? I recognize the tent.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:27 (eighteen years ago) link

the picture is different from the gig that is up to listen to. i think that's what it says on there.

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I still haven't got Keep Breathing, holmes :-(

The standout bonus track on Return of... is "Madeline" and y'all know it.

Rabbi Esteban Buttez (ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!!), Sunday, 16 April 2006 12:16 (eighteen years ago) link

the picture is indeed a screen grab from the factory vid. date for that show was 24 July 1981. the audio is from a different show on 13 October 1981. as far as i know this show was not ever released on CD.

at any rate, i'll be leaving it up there for a good amount of time. enjoy.

thanks, matt. i enjoyed it.

I recently heard the first two Durutti tracks ever from the Factory Sample record - Thin Ice and No Communication. I was shocked to find a male vocalist is on these, and it doesn't sound like either Vini or the guy who sings "Sleep Will Come". Does anyone know who this guy is out of curiosity? The online Factory discography didn't mention it. Another thing I don't understand is there is another Durutti Column discog online that is telling me there was actually a third track on that Factory Sample EP that the Factory discog doesn't list, entitled "Occaisional Labour In Culture". Arrgh. What gives?

Most of that original band called "Durutti Column" became the Mothmen.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:30 (seventeen years ago) link

And a couple of the Mothmen ended up in the first Simply Red line up. Another ended up with an axe in his head and being sung about by Shaun Ryder.

Peteski, Friday, 5 May 2006 11:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I saw the orig Durutti lineup back in 78 (I think). They were originally called Fast Breeder IIRC. Phil Rainford was the singer. Tony Bowers (bass) and Chris Joyce (drums) were in the Mothmen IIRC, then Simply Red.

i've met the original durutti singer Colin a couple of times, lovely fellow.

xpost fair enough. There was a picture in one of the music mags recently.

Ha! Wiki says pretty much what I said, except that I thought that Rowbotham (the one who got murdered) replaced Bowers on bass but wasn't in DC at the same time. I think he (Rowb) also played in the Invisible Girls with Steve Hopkins.
I didn't know about Colin Sharp.

I really must get what few albums I don't have. Did Bread and Circuses finally get reissued? (I've got the original CD run so I'm not too worried...)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

it was never reissued on factory once, but i don't think the crepuscule version is out of print (i got hold of it with great ease a couple of years ago)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 5 May 2006 13:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Goodness, all this Durutti talk is making my head spin. I feel some satisfaction though at hearing the Mothmen mentioned as the band...I actually do know what the Mothmen sound like, so I feel better now with that information imparted to me.

It says something that these two tracks were never reissued along with all the other Factory stuff.

"No Communication" is very a snapshot of the times. Very sub-Magazine. Mind you, Joy Div didn't arf crib the lyrics off for "Transmission".
