Not counting Scharpling (who I listen to primarily for comedy), my favorite WFMU DJ lately is Ken Freedman. I've found some great stuff on his show.

Did anyone hear Petey's Listener Hour? A-mazing.

Mike Dixon, Thursday, 28 October 2004 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

has no one on this thread mentioned gaylord? are y'all crazy? he is fmu's most pop-tastic dj.

i also love belinda and hova's warped kid's show "greasy kid stuff," which probably has a much smaller playlist than the average fmu show, but it's a damn good playlist, and it's funny, and they're funny, and they, too, are pop-tastic.

Oooo, Gaylord Fields once told me I slightly resembled Ann-Margret so he is obviously one of my very favorite WFMU DJs

I was on seven second delay last week when they did the honor system call-in fantasy baseball game. The show was a total wreck but overall it's one of the best call in shows the world has known. I got a turkey and fixins from Andy Breckman during a Thanksgiving scavenger hunt a couple years back, too.

Chris T's Aerial View is great, Greasy Kid Stuff, Kenny G, Ken Freedman, Brian Turner, $mall Change, Frak O'Toole, and I think I remember a DJ named Crow from a few years back who I miss alot.

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Frank, not "Frak" O'Toole

Shaun (shaun), Friday, 29 October 2004 19:42 (nineteen years ago) link

two months pass...
Wm Berger's The Hip Bone circa early 90s including his groudbreaking 4-trak showcase "lo-fi" (because I met a lot of good friends that way).

Glenn Jones because he doesn't care if I think so and plays whatever he wants.

What happened to Frank O'Toole? I finally have the bandwidth to listen on the web and I can't find his show?

Doug Wolk has/had a show? That must be/have been good.

and lastly, in memorium, TKF

Skooli Descartes, Hyena Sparerib, the Electric Eggplant, SPOOG, S!T!O!I!N!K!

John Beekman, Friday, 7 January 2005 00:32 (nineteen years ago) link

You can still listen to Douglas' show - the archives are right here.

Also, here are the archives for Frank O'Toole.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 7 January 2005 03:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Frank isn't on the current schedule, but he probably come back sooner or later.

Matthew "Flux" Perpetua, Friday, 7 January 2005 03:56 (nineteen years ago) link

My vote might be discounted but I gotta vote for my homie Mr. FineWine, especially since I was with him when he realized what his DJ name was gonna be.

I used to really enjoy Michael Goodstein's show. I feel sad that it's been so long since I listened to WFMU. "too much music, too little time"

Haven't listened in a while but Fabio and Tony Coulter are my faves.

I podcast Jason Forrest to my pod.

your null frame's email address looks very familiar. i think it may be a fellow dj WPRB. you know, that other station in new jersey.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:25 (eighteen years ago) link

ugh, i mean "a fellow dj at WPRB".

joining words with others and turning them into sentences = *so* overrated

Tracer, when Fine Wine gets back from Spain, we should go see him at Botanica or one of his other gigs.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Totally!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 06:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Favorite back to back shows: Charlie and Tony Coulter. I liked Fabio's show a lot too, sorry to see him go. Was the departure his idea or was he chased out?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 13:53 (eighteen years ago) link

im sad to loose fabio as well and fully support the charlie/tony combo.

kenny g's been brilliant since his return. as has rob lim.

My favorite DJ is probably Marc Grobman but my favorite show is probably Monica's.

Me too!

I love the Spazz and many others, though.

if admissions staffs like me, I will be at WESU.

I was a WESU DJ! I miss my old show :(

Candicissima (candicissima), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Ken, Irwin, Kenny G, Rex, Tony Coulter, Prof. Dum Dum, Kevin Nutt, Mr Fine Wine, Chris T. (I listen to a lot of FMU and I can't decide between them - okay, if I had to pick one it'd be Ken)

I also liked the Pounding System with Clay (who always sounded very down), Small Change (who was fond of the term "Schlitz" instead of "shit" which always cracked me up), and the Bossa Nova show.

Brakhage (brakhage), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been unable to listen to weekday shows or archives for a year, so I sorely miss Charlie, Trouble, Ken and Monica.

You should really hear Mark Allen's Halloween show from last Saturday, the body-disposal instructions and Dario Argento murder collage in partic:

Bob Brainen all the way baby.

Jonathan DD, Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, Brainen is always good.

What happened to Laura Cantrell this season? Busy promoting her new album? Hope she returns next season.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I believe her touring schedule made doing her show impractical, at least for now.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, Laura's touring schedule is going to keep her from making the amount of shows asked for DJs to take a slot for a season, we hope she's back in the spring, if not sooner doing fill-ins.

yo. I'm the current president of WESU... Just want to give a call from the abyss... we've seen better days, but we're still kicking. The NPR/WSHU bit has been damaging, but... we're working our way out of it, slowly...:

Anyway, I'm originally from jersey, so, much love to FMU!

No more Fabio? What happened? As I mentioned above I haven't listened in quite a while but Fabio was one of my favorites.

Did he jump or was he pushed!

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 13:08 (eighteen years ago) link

Anyone catch FMU as host of NY Noise? I don't usually watch, because I don't usually like it, but I happened to catch this one -- wow! Early Fall, Beefheart (best video ever????), Devo, Lesley Gore, Serge. Those were some wild videos. I cut my phone conversation off in mid-sentence to watch.
Brian - when are they going to podcast your show? I can never listen but would like to.

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Fabio'll be back next schedule period, as will Laura Cantrell hopefully, she's touring a lot this season for her album. Thanks for the kind words on the Tv show, was really nice of em to allow those clips to go on. Did you notice that after the Beefheart clip, they had one of those anti-drug PSA TV commercials go on where guys were making crystal meth to what sounded like Beefheart playing in the background. As for podcasting, unfortunately right now we're limited to the shows that have non-licensed music (i.e. talk shows, antique phonograph, collage), maybe that will change someday.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:46 (eighteen years ago) link

A-ha, thanks - hadn't noticed it was only those shows being podcasted, but that makes sense. And yeah, also noticed the Crystal Meth commercial but didn't notice the music. Is the Beefheart vid available on something? (Should probably pay more attention to DVDs but I don't.)

TRG (TRG), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 14:57 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost TRG: even if it's not as automated as a podcast, saving shows to your hard drive is really very easy. Save the .m3u file that the "Listen to mp3" link brings up to your hard drive, instead of playing it. Open that file in a text editor (e.g. Notepad in Windows)--that will show the direct link to the mp3 file of the show. Plug that link into a download manager and you've got it. WFMU seems to keep the mp3 links active for 2-3 weeks--after that it's just the Real Audio format, which sounds pretty cruddy.
