Rhys Darby's stand-up is a bit weird. He's a funny noises comedian, with a slightly frat-boyish persona.

omg the arj barker 'going to sleep' bit, killing me here.

Re-watching this on dvd, I have been reminded of two things:

1. Todd Barry is very small.
2. Eugene Mirman, on the other hand, is quite large.

Yeah, but still a kind of endearing dork.

Arj Barker is a kind of angry stoner stand-up.

Kristen Schaal's stand-up persona of a demented slut was a little disturbing, which is what I gather she was aiming at.

Been watching this on DVD. Kind of underwhelmed, although I did like "Carol Brown," Brian the Prime Minister and Patton Oswalt as Elton John imitator. Need to click on that Elvis Telecom link.

imo the second series, while enjoyable in parts, was pretty pathetic compared to the first, which i loved

Yeah I preferred s1 to s2 overall, esp how insane Mel gets towards the end (poor Doug).

Fin:

Bret, Jemaine and James (co-creator/director) said “we’ve noticed the less we say about the future of the show, the more people want to talk about it, so in an effort to reverse this trend we are today announcing that we won’t be returning for a 3rd season. We’re very proud of the two seasons we made and we like the way the show ended. We’d like to thank everyone who helped make the show and also everyone who watched it. While the characters Bret and Jemaine will no longer be around, the real Bret and Jemaine will continue to exist."

Good. I don't think I could stomach another drop in quality like the one from the first to the second.

yeah I wasnt as fond of the second batch. And the ending was neatly tied up so any more would be superflous.

Eagle vs Shark is a pretty horrible film. Nothing sweet or charming about barely-functional, self-obsessed morons.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I realise the irony of writing that as a FoTC fan, but somehow the show pulls it off.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

thought it was ok. there's plenty sweet and charming about the lead female role, lead male is a bit of a stretch in terms of 'looking for sympathy'. good performances from both though.

k¸ (darraghmac), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I found it to be a really queasy mix of misanthropic and sentimental, which is not to say there weren't one or two chuckles.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:52 (thirteen years ago) link

But you're right, I objected to him way more than here. His character was just a straight-up dickhead.

Do hip-hop parodies ever age well? (Watched "Hiphoppopottamus" video last week, and, alas, it did not. Kind of like the Revenge of the Nerds breakdance.)

Oh good ! I hadn't thought about them in a while.
Started listening to that and they still have it !
So far the highlight is "Summer of 1353".

Their first show was on the BBC, but it didn't stop them taking the premise and some of the songs and scripts to HBO. HBO broadcast this last October and had it available to stream for months, but presumably they either own the entire thing or retained the audio rights, such that they can release it for sale or audio streaming now.

I just looked and it's back on HBO in fifteen days. So, out of seven months, there's, what, one (1) month's holdback where it came off HBO so they can try and sell it in a different format for a fortnight.
