I played it through on the computer and loved it, but if you do have the option or wherewithal to get it done on an actual portable I would do it, because the whole musical timing element is completely screwed in emulation. You can get through the game regardless but I imagine it's less fun, the battles are more frustrating when you can't do the attack tapping.
― Nhex, Sunday, 23 August 2009 18:46 (fourteen years ago) link
I did not know that (only played the first little bit). Maybe it depends on the emulator you use too, maybe some are better than others?
― Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 23 August 2009 20:09 (fourteen years ago) link
That's definitely possible, but I'm sure the emulation will never 100% match the original hardware cycle-for-cycle. 99% of games you don't need to be accurate down to milliseconds but for this (and I imagine the original Rhythm Heaven), even when your emulator fluctuates from 99% to 100% clock speed, it's enough to completely blow this. Like I said you can still get through battles but it's definitely more grindy than the game intends. For Mother 3, you won't even notice this problem until 3 or 4 chapters in when the battles get significantly harder.

I guess Itoi was inspired in making this by a trilogy of novels called The Notebook/The Proof/The Third Lie. I'm reading them right now, and so far: very good, but intensely disturbing. Way more so than anything in Mother 3.

I started playing this through again. I forgot this game's crazy coincidence!
There is a wife & husband couple called Abbey & Abbot in this game
which are both misspelled versions of things I have been called, my name and my "name"
IRL (Abb13) and on the onlnie (Abbott)

This trilogy is very, very good, by the way – I read half of it last summer, and I reread the whole thing last week. I wish I knew anyone else (online or IRL) who has read this so I could compare mind meltedness notes. It feels kind of lonely having something so good to myself!

It's really good! I feel like there's a lot of depth, but that's just a guess, I was advised to go into this game with as little info as possible + that was good advice.
Definitely Earthbound-influenced enough so that it could be a game in the series in some ways, but still has a lot of interesting touches + fun gameplay elements in addition to the familiar ~feelllzzz&vibbezzz~

I just want all of the games as thoroughly and charmingly playful/quirky/bizarre as EarthBound and Katamari

Fair enough. That's what I liked about the PS2 & Dreamcast, as it seemed they were great for importing such rich veins of barely translated Japanese insanity into domestic consoles.

I've played Undertale twice now, and got two different endings. I don't know if I have it in me to play the "genocide" route.
One PS2 Japanese import I loved was Gregory Horror Show. The actual gameplay in itself was perhaps a little repetitive, but it didn't matter because it was fun to just hang around and spy on the crazy tenants going about their daily routines.
― Duane Barry, Friday, 13 November 2015 01:18 (eight years ago) link
yooooo how do I play that (w/o dropping stupid coin on a mod-chipped PS2 and shipping an import game overseas)?

Weird Japanese awesomeness:
That futuristic fishing game including as a demo on one of the OPM discs.
Seaman
Odama
Jet Set Radio
Katamari
Earthbound was like all of this, of course, particularly the tea break and power of collective prayer
