this is a good recommendations list it largely overlaps with the huge amount of stuff De Subjectivisten recommended to me when i started a metal/hardrock listening project. (http://onvermijdelijkemetal.blogspot.com/) (just check out the pictures ;) ) (or my 14 favourites: http://onvermijdelijkemetal.blogspot.com/search/label/Onvermijdelijk
my favourite from the list is Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath.

my favourites strangely (..) correlate with softer melodic records, like Death Angel's Act II (which is awesome)

To make this list, does the album simply have to be great enough or are you also judging based on whether the album has reached a certain critical mass with underground fans?
This list was done together with friends some old bandmates etc. The idea was that it needed a critical mass of followers yes, the definitive top 100 canon of "metal for die-hard metalheads" - no crossover prog/hardcore/goth bullshit, no retro or clone bands, nothing too far into the kvlt-limited-to-66-tapes sub-sub-subgenre labyrinth etc.
Lots of my personal favourites are not on it (And The Forests Dream Eternally, Wolf's Lair Abyss, Orkblut The Retaliation, Vampires of Black Imperial Blood, Gorefest-False, Battles In The North, Individual Thought Patterns etc).

i'll make a note of it. next on the list is Slayer's Seasons of the Abyss. (after the summer-break, i don't think metal is much of a summer genre)

Been listening to With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness a lot lately. Awesome. Slowly dawning on me that I prefer Death Metal to Black.

Darkspace II but not III? III is mind-melting.

I want to start listening to some more metal.
Can any of you tell me what the best metal magazines and blogs/websites are?

www.metalsucks.net is pretty good and funny. blabbermouth nowadays is full of too much rubbish and the comments section is nearing youtube levels sometimes.

I'm a fan of Metal Inquisition myself. As for magazines, Terrorizer is a good all-round read. They get most of the popular genres covered and have a good balance between the trad and the hip. They sometimes do nice genre specials, the punk one they did some years ago was really good.

I'm going to check out all of those pubs. Thanks, guys.

Yeah if I don't find it in the next week or so, I think I'll end up going that route.

Borders is your best bet.

I would have thought that Aquarius was my best bet, but when I called earlier last week the guy on the phone was like "WTF are you talking about? I've never even heard of that."
― Alex in SF, Monday, 24 August 2009 17:55 (fourteen years ago) link
Actually he was very polite and said that he was sure they would try to stock it since they stock Terrorizer.

As far as internet metal goes, this is of course the grandaddy

Belatedly working through this helpful list. I'm curious, what would you add to/subtract from it now, Siegbran?
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 20:07 (six years ago) link
Great, I'm happy that this is helping people. Wouldn't really subtract anything, I'd say it's still a pretty good list of the canonical stuff until 1999/2000. Maybe I'd pick another Voivod record but the first few are all great. I'd probably add Gorguts The Erosion Of Sanity.
For more recent stuff, this was my ballot for the 2000-2015 metal poll: https://ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?showall=true&bookmarkedmessageid=6056022&boardid=41&threadid=104546
