Brian De Palma: C/D, S/D etc

Jones, this is the perfect place to post that artist thread we was talking about.

I really love DiPalma these days. Dressed To Kill is probably my favorite with The Fury, Carrie, Blow Out and Phantom Of The Paradise coming in behind it. The Untouchables and Sisters are fun. Scarface would suck less if Oliver Stone hadn't written it and Mission To Mars, Raising Cain and Bonfire Of The Vanities are pretty embarassing. Haven't seen the rest.

Give De Palma a tight script and he'll always deliver. Give him flab and cliche and that is exactly what you'll get back.

i need to watch sisters again. i saw it as an adoloscent, and i remember thinking it was really cool, though confusing at times.

Body Double is such an 80s movie...relax don't do it. I'd like to see that one again as I haven't seen it since high school.

I've seen Dressed to Kill and Blow Out in the past couple of years and it suprised me how well they have held up. They are much better than so many of the crap dramas that get turned out today.

Calito's Way, The Untouchables, Carrie and Casulties of War are also good Hollywood movies.

Casulties of War has quite a few people that have gotten much more famous afterwards in small roles like John C. Reilly and Ving Rhames. I checked it out again a few months back and got a chuckle when Ving Rhames pops up.

blow-out i dug because i like conspiracy films. it was deeply flawed, however, but i didn't take it too seriously. i saw it as a cross bewteen the conversation and blow-up, and i liked it far more than the latter.

sisters i think is my favorite - totally brilliant horror film that exists firmly outside of the horror genre. maybe a bit too much hitchcock-worship, but it's compelling (except for maybe the documentary about siamese twins part).

greetings and hi,mom are interesting films, certainly because they are key examples of the "counterculture comedy" genre that existed oh too briefly, and also because robert deniro is so young in them. i really liked hi,mom but i didn't like greetings at all. the performance art/play thing at the end of hi, mom is wonderfully twisted.

"Blow Out" is a quintessential '80s film, I mean this in a good way ("Blue Velvet" and "Something Wild" being two of the others).

The one w/ Cage, "Snake Eyes," is fine too.

I think "Obsession" is kind of ridiculous as a Hitch pastiche, but it's nasty and therefore somewhat enjoyable.

"Carrie" is classic, for sure.

I also like "Raising Cain" for what it's worth.

He seems such an unreconstructed '60s filmmaker, pissed off about injustice, and willing to titillate for the hell of it, which I admire. Outside of "Blow Out" and maybe "Carrie" I don't think he's made any GREAT movies but they're mostly good, except for the awful Wolfe thing and "Mission."

Anyway, classic.

Femme Fatale was damn cool, though I don't find RRS very appealing.

Mission Impossible was mostly disposable, save for the hanging-from-the-ceiling bit.

kudos for original list maker mentioning Carlito's Way and NOT Scarface.

granted, I like the latter. when I'm angry it's a movie that gets my jices flowing, but all things considered it's very one-dimensional. No reason for it to be three hours long outside of the fact that De Palma probably figured American audiences assumed longer=avant garde.

His rise to power was nothing more than a montage and his fall from grace comes out of nowhere and very abruptly.

Really if you approach the movie for what it is, eye candy with catchy one liners, it's a good time. But there's nothing to worship about it.

Carlito's Way was much better.
