Okay, the sleazy Spielberg. Oops, also redundant. Let's say the seedy Spielberg.

i say again: femme fatale is the unsexiest movie since showgirls

jones (actual), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

You can not and will not erase my love of that movie.

Jones, this is the perfect place to post that artist thread we was talking about.

(haha i started it on ILE today and it made me feel awful! verdict: 80's movie-posters = the most difficult art EVER)

jones (actual), Monday, 28 April 2003 23:45 (twenty years ago) link

I just said this on ILE.

I really love DiPalma these days. Dressed To Kill is probably my favorite with The Fury, Carrie, Blow Out and Phantom Of The Paradise coming in behind it. The Untouchables and Sisters are fun. Scarface would suck less if Oliver Stone hadn't written it and Mission To Mars, Raising Cain and Bonfire Of The Vanities are pretty embarassing. Haven't seen the rest.

Tricksters don't bother me as long as their trickery doesn't seem to be self-glorifying. At his best he's enjoying the medium and enhancing the overall effect of a scene rather than trying to distance you. There's more LOVE in his work then in Kubrick's.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:39 (twenty years ago) link

not to mention lust

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 00:50 (twenty years ago) link

huh? kubrick may have loved robots, but thats still love. there is at least one heart-breaking moment in every kubrick move.

SEARCH: Phantom Of The Paradise.

Give De Palma a tight script and he'll always deliver. Give him flab and cliche and that is exactly what you'll get back.

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 10:59 (twenty years ago) link

i never realized phantom of the paradise was de palma. wow.

i need to watch sisters again. i saw it as an adoloscent, and i remember thinking it was really cool, though confusing at times.

Dallas Yertle (Dallas Yertle), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:26 (twenty years ago) link

DePalma made Mission Impossible? That is kind of suprising as I thought it sucked, especially that cheeze digital effect with the helicopter in the tunnel.

Body Double is such an 80s movie...relax don't do it. I'd like to see that one again as I haven't seen it since high school.

I've seen Dressed to Kill and Blow Out in the past couple of years and it suprised me how well they have held up. They are much better than so many of the crap dramas that get turned out today.

Calito's Way, The Untouchables, Carrie and Casulties of War are also good Hollywood movies.

Casulties of War has quite a few people that have gotten much more famous afterwards in small roles like John C. Reilly and Ving Rhames. I checked it out again a few months back and got a chuckle when Ving Rhames pops up.

i have only seen a few depalma films.

blow-out i dug because i like conspiracy films. it was deeply flawed, however, but i didn't take it too seriously. i saw it as a cross bewteen the conversation and blow-up, and i liked it far more than the latter.

sisters i think is my favorite - totally brilliant horror film that exists firmly outside of the horror genre. maybe a bit too much hitchcock-worship, but it's compelling (except for maybe the documentary about siamese twins part).

greetings and hi,mom are interesting films, certainly because they are key examples of the "counterculture comedy" genre that existed oh too briefly, and also because robert deniro is so young in them. i really liked hi,mom but i didn't like greetings at all. the performance art/play thing at the end of hi, mom is wonderfully twisted.

De Palma is the king of inadvertant comedy.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 08:02 (twenty years ago) link

Some of it might be more advertant than you think.

slutsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 13:21 (twenty years ago) link

I'm willing to believe that.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Tuesday, 6 May 2003 18:58 (twenty years ago) link

I love De Palma; he can be so terrible, though.

"Blow Out" is a quintessential '80s film, I mean this in a good way ("Blue Velvet" and "Something Wild" being two of the others).

The one w/ Cage, "Snake Eyes," is fine too.

I think "Obsession" is kind of ridiculous as a Hitch pastiche, but it's nasty and therefore somewhat enjoyable.

"Carrie" is classic, for sure.

I also like "Raising Cain" for what it's worth.

He seems such an unreconstructed '60s filmmaker, pissed off about injustice, and willing to titillate for the hell of it, which I admire. Outside of "Blow Out" and maybe "Carrie" I don't think he's made any GREAT movies but they're mostly good, except for the awful Wolfe thing and "Mission."

I saw Femme Fatale with the gf. the other day and was in lurve until near the end (the ten minutes before the "twist" -- which was itself okay) as was she. She recalls a discussion we had about DePalma except I don't recall having ever seen another of his films excepty Scarface, Carrie, and Mission Impossible (and forgot about him until we rented Femme Fatale) so either I was parroting some article I'd recently read or I was ill-informed but talking anyway, or both, or maybe she has a faulty memory or I coulda been just talking about Scarface, or perhaps strangely praising Mission Impossible (!).

Anyway, classic.

how good is the first 40 minutes of that movie

slutsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 7 May 2003 21:07 (twenty years ago) link

Is the trailer for Femme Fatale misleading? Because it didn't look like any film that I wanted to be anywhere near.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 May 2003 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

You should see the French trailer, it's great (it's pretty much the whole movie sped up to fit into 2 minutes). I don't remember the other one.

slutsky (slutsky), Thursday, 8 May 2003 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

I just watched Casualties Of War for the first time last night, and it might be my favorite DePalma film save for Dressed To Kill. He's lucky that M.J. Fox's awkwardness fit the character, cuz otherwise it would have sunk the film (it obliterates the one long speech he gives near the end, the scene is so lame it belongs in a different movie). Some of his most masterful direction and its NOT ABOUT MOVIES. The ending is a bit flat, but it's great in way that builds on his earlier successes while evolving beyond the camp elements of his '70s works. Sean Penn, John Leguizamo and John C. Reilly are great too.

I hated Scarface so much I stopped halfway through.

Femme Fatale was damn cool, though I don't find RRS very appealing.

Mission Impossible was mostly disposable, save for the hanging-from-the-ceiling bit.

xpost

kudos for original list maker mentioning Carlito's Way and NOT Scarface.

granted, I like the latter. when I'm angry it's a movie that gets my jices flowing, but all things considered it's very one-dimensional. No reason for it to be three hours long outside of the fact that De Palma probably figured American audiences assumed longer=avant garde.

His rise to power was nothing more than a montage and his fall from grace comes out of nowhere and very abruptly.

Really if you approach the movie for what it is, eye candy with catchy one liners, it's a good time. But there's nothing to worship about it.

Carlito's Way was much better.
