original poll idea was return of the mack vs you know whats up by donnell jones

someone explain this anti-mack bias

deej, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

"Return of the Mack" has a good beat but it's not going to beat "No Diggity" on that. The vocal on "Return of the Mack" has that weird pinched sound. I mean, it's a great song too, but still, "No Diggity"!

good poll

Euler, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:00 (sixteen years ago) link

why is that such an obvious answer??

Mostly because while I love "Return of the Mack", I have never played it on repeat for 90 minutes and then still wanted to listen to it afterwards.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:01 (sixteen years ago) link

i really would rather listen to return of the mack

and what, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

unlike dan i actually think its harder to get tired of - no diggity is too stuck in this weird new jack swing/hip-hop/doo wop mode to really hit all the pleasure centers like mark morrison n/h

and what, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Another plus for "No Diggity" in my book is that I can sing along to it because it's sung in the baritone range.

(xp: I think "Return of the Mack" is nigh-undeniable EXCEPT for when compared to "No Diggity", a song I practically feel in my bones.)

The vocal on "Return of the Mack" has that weird pinched sound.

this is totally the reason I love "Return of the Mack."

return of the mack is actually more in my range tho i end up sounding like dude from maroon 5 :-/

i for one don't get it. in high school i would wait for a friend of mine after school every day & i'd blast RoTM on a boombox when he came into view. he wasn't annoyed at all. it made him feel majestic.

myndbloom, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

As much as "No Diggity" is one of my favorite songs ever, fuck a motherfucker who would vote against "Return of the Mack".

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:24 (sixteen years ago) link

The Rev has perfectly expressed my quandry. Still voted No Diggity, though.

i think i have to give this to mack

gff, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I have to ask (before I killfile you), have the people voting for "No Diggity" heard the extended version of "Return of the Mack", which may damn well be the best thing in the world ever?

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i like return of the mack ok but this ain't no contesto

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

lol no I haven't heard the extended version, just the ordinary single. And I love both songs, just love "No Diggity" more.

Euler, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:36 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm surprised return of the mack is even known by americans

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:37 (sixteen years ago) link

It was a #2 hit.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link

i like the left-hand piano roll bit on 'no diggity,' and the guitar is up there with the first :01 of early elvis tunes as far as being totally indelible. but i dunno, the glossiness of 'mack' has always really done it for me.

gff, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link

gff, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:39 (sixteen years ago) link

think i might even prefer mark morrison's first two singles ('crazy' and 'let's get down') to rotm

love 'u know what's up' too and recently heard montell's 'get it on tonite' for first time in ages - that's an under-rated jam

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:40 (sixteen years ago) link

best blackstreet single poll minus no diggity could be a good poll

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I would be the corny fuxxor who voted "Boyfriend/Girlfriend".

HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

killfile!

that is to say No Diggity!

I know, right?, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

"Return of the Mack" vs "This is How We Do It" not only be impossible, but would probably tear the fabric of the universe apart.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:42 (sixteen years ago) link

return of the mack is great, no doubt. could use a bridge, though.

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:44 (sixteen years ago) link

blueski, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

'this is how we do it' isn't anywhere near 'mack'!

To me 'Return of the Mack' is second-tier stuff. Challenging for promotion, definitely, but will get relegated the next season. No Diggity is a Champions League contender no doubt.

The extended version of Return of the Mack is way better than the single edit. The jazzy piano is ace.

earlnash, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 03:45 (seven years ago) link

Agree on the piano, though IMO the instrumental groove goes on a bit too long at the end, they could've trimmed the tune down by a minute or so.

I'm behind on the show but I was watching an episode of Starstruck where the lead character got laid on some guy's lifeboat and she was walking away all excited with airpods in, blasting this song, with people hi-fiving her on the street.

it seemed like, idk, the essence of this song? which can never be played enough.

anyway these poll results were wrong and I am looking to see them stricken from the record.
