I want to be where the BoC are in that picture, right now.

Outdoors clothes/countryside pictures are always cool. Obv there is a sense of dichotomy being played with there: futuristic/natural etc. The continuing notion of folktronica I suppose. BoC like to hide their faces a lot. Autechre dude on the right is looking into the future, dude on the left is looking at you i.e. the now. I wd like to go walking with these guys and just hang out, like. The Autechre picture is about roots. The BoC pic is about margins or borders.

So those huge machines that make us think retro wd be signifying the PHUTURE in the early 50s when that was taken. And Karlheinz looking out into it again. I think Aaron Funk might be skitting the "look into the future" pose. His zebra and starfish are cutely surrealist tho.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 11:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually I think the photo's from 1964... which would be "Telemusik", NHK Studios, Tokyo... guessing here

Mixmaster Morris:

How old is this guy btw? The above pic is presumably a newish one, but I remember seeing pics of him in 1993 or 1994 where he already looked old.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 12:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, according to Wikipedia he was born in 1960, so I guess at 33 he would've looked old to the 14-year old me.

The machine fetish pics are always a little bit like the archetypal guitarist's pose with his weapon pushed into the camera, but at the same time Jelinek and Micronauts guy are slightly consumed or enwombed by their gear. Is that really what Basinski looks like? Not at all how I'd imagined him. I like that he's looking slightly bemused by the box in front of him like "WTF do I do with this?"

Maybe with the guys pictured without instruments there is some slight suggestion that the music, or their essence as music-makers, is outside of the actual machines themselves. Like primarily their music is a Platonic Form that happily exists prior to making or recording it.

I like this thread. They are mostly good portraits, all else aside. I've wallpapered the Stockhausen.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/POLEIMWALD.jpg

These are the three promo pics that came with the new Pole album, Steingarten. They're kinda weird, I've always thought of Pole as a very urban-sounding artist. I guess Steingarten has a bit more "natural" sound to it that his previous LPs though.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:00 (sixteen years ago) link

It's a pity Photobucket doesn't allow me to post bigger versions of the pics, but I can tell you he looks quite happy or bemused in the last two.

ugh makes pole look like the world's dorkiest classical cellist or somethng

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Are the poses meant to be funny/ironic? The one on the pier looks like a catalogue shot. They all do rilly.

Lingbert, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:07 (sixteen years ago) link

Ir was kinda funny opening the pics, because I'd never ever seen a pic of Pole before (even though I've listened to his music for years), and this certainly wasn't what I was expecting. I think it's kinda nice how they go against the grain of typical electronic artist pics though - especially the second one, where he looks like some cozy, middle-aged German family man out on a picnic with his beer tankard.

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:09 (sixteen years ago) link

It's not really against the grain tho, look at Autechre, BoC, Mira Calix, even Roedelius on this thread. Instrumental music has looooooong history of pastoral associations is perhaps another part of why.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:13 (sixteen years ago) link

What I meant by against grain (besides the fact that it makes a lot more sense for BoC than Pole to pose in the woods) is how decidedly goofy and uncool he looks in these. I wish I could post bigger versions of these pics so you could see them better, is there some better site than Photobucket that'd allow it?

Tuomas, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:17 (sixteen years ago) link

we can tell how uncool he looks in those pics just fine

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 10 December 2007 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Also re: the first Murcof picture. He looks like a combination of a young Fidel Castro and Suge Knight.

Also I once noticed: Ellen Allien http://www.discogs.com/image/A-4281-001.jpg
Superpitcher http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:G48DwCBz0SDoHM:http://www.resonatormag.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/superpitcher.jpg

compare & contrast w/mayer, now there's a smug looking rictus.

Kind of interesting you should mention that, because When I saw Theo Parrish DJ in the summer, I found him to be exactly like Michael Mayer, who I saw like a month before.

I'd never heard him DJ beforehand, or otherwise really, so correct me for an shortsightedness, but he mixed just like him, doing really quick 4-16 bar fades and just working the knobs for the 8 or so minutes in between. Also, the records also kept skipping, to which Theo kept making these absolutely great ridiculous faces like he had bit into a lemon or something. Interestingly enough, more or less the same thing was the case when I saw Michael Mayer, just without the funny faces, but they seemed to take the same attitude to DJ'ing.

That's my unnecessary anecdote.

Villalobos looks like Adrian Brody in the beach shot. If those are in Chile then they are presumably taken in the Atacama, home of totally radical telescopes and lagoons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atacama_Desert

caek, Tuesday, 11 December 2007 20:27 (sixteen years ago) link

yea i was wondering if it was the atacama. i just didn't see any water when i was there. but i think there might be other places in chile/atacama that look more like the villalobos photo.

he does look like adrian brody in that photo.
