In their defense, the album title is worst than the cover.

The money that Sleazy made from this design group was the major source of funding for Throbbing Gristle and Industrial Records.

I would lean toward classic.

Completely classic. I don't love every Hipgnosis cover, but I don't hate any of them.

the 10cc 'original soundtrack' cover art is pretty heavy, though it's maybe a little more '8 1/2' than teenage mindfuck scorpions steez. all the same, i have to defer to the sleazy connection mentioned above.

earth mystery, Sunday, 6 May 2007 03:38 (sixteen years ago) link

i imagine the bad ones stemming from too much input from the bands, like them having "grand ideas" of what their cover look like and hipgnosis just executes it

My friend Jill pointed out that Mclusky's title The Difference Between Me and You is That I'm Not on Fire could be read as a tribute to the cover of Wish You Were Here.

Me too!

One of my (pathetically) proudest moments: A coupla years ago I was reading through a thread in which someone mentioned a certain Strawbs album cover depicting a guy trapped in a phone booth full of water. I'd never seen it, but after hearing the desciption I just KNEW it had to be a Hypgnosis original. Which it was.

Anyone who calls the cover of XTC's Go2 a "dud" is a complete idiot.

I don't think Dark Side OTM is all that. My fave is probably Wish You Were Here or Presence. That Quatermass is pretty nice too.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 6 May 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

this should be cross-referenced with the "favorite Throbbing Gristle" poll.

dan selzer, Sunday, 6 May 2007 18:07 (sixteen years ago) link

What's lost in the translation is that US prudery resulted in the domestic label fading out the "couple" on Force It.

Ha, that made it even creepier!

The Cranberries and Catherine Wheel covers they did were pretty dire, but I dig the Peter Gabriel ones they did.

I really like the design on this one, but that awful font used in the band logo just about kills it:

Cool, we have a Hipgnosis thread in place already.

I love the set photography they employed sometimes, the way they made it look oddly flat and lifeless. This cover is creepy.

I never thought of it before, but it seems like they used a lot of hand colored black and white photos. That UFO one is definitely one, the first peter gabriel in the car is one, and I think Atom Heart Mother is too.

Was there never an Arena or Omnibus type documentary on Hipgnosis? If not, a missed opportunity. Just found this genial interview with French TV though: https://vimeo.com/406174252

I think I saw something anyway. Think it may be something that is mentioned in relation to Sleazy christopherson though that's probably not the most frequent of subjects either.

Have definitely read a couple of coffee table books on the artwork

Stevolende, Thursday, 3 March 2022 10:33 (two years ago) link

There was a documentary made about Storm & Hipnosis a few years back, I haven't managed to see it yet.

I just bought Po's book, it is really lovely actually and looks like a pretty good read.

Hipgnosis the IP holding company is named after the design studio, but there's no relationship otherwise.

Ironic example of IP infringement

Saw that trailer last night, plays here in a couple of weeks, really looking forward to it. (I think the theatre's program guide says it's Corbijn's first film, which isn't really even close.) Art-rock fan in high school, when all these albums were new, long since moved on, but they do seem to be a foundational part of the decade.

clemenza, Monday, 29 May 2023 16:06 (ten months ago) link

it's kind of his first documentary i think (if you don't count depeche mode live concert vids)

Documentary was pretty good, although honestly, many of those covers look as silly as the caricature would have it. (And I don't think they ever designed a cover as great as Neil Young's Time Fades Away or On the Beach, or many, many other personal favourites.) Corbijn does something interesting at the end: Powell and Thorgerson have their falling out, which seems to be in the mid-'90s, Powell says they didn't talk for another 12 years, then the film ends with Thorgerson's death in 2013. Which means they did talk and maybe even reconcile at some point. But he skips that for the sadder ending.

A lot of Noel Gallagher.

The documentary is well worth catching (it’s on streaming services in the Uk). Some lovely archival stuff from the 60’s and 70’s…most of the Storm interviews have been shown elsewhere but it’s worth watching for the ‘Animals’ anecdote alone…I agree too much Noel Gallagher (not sure he needed to be involved??) and possibly produced more shit covers than great but quite moving in the end…quite candid about Sleazy too…all I’ll say is he enjoyed working in a mortuary probably more somebody should…

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Friday, 11 August 2023 23:27 (eight months ago) link

Gallagher kinda ruined this for me. I think I was wanting a different kind of documentary - certainly a lot more of Roger Dean and Peter Saville.

Elvis Telecom, Saturday, 12 August 2023 01:10 (eight months ago) link

I guess he was there to give the ‘man in the street’ angle but probably just a ‘man in the street’ (a Hipgnosis fan) would of been more illuminating

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Saturday, 12 August 2023 01:17 (eight months ago) link

Old interview footage, and who has the rights to use them, is always an issue in these things. There's a great interview with Richard Wright from the Classic Album episode on DSOTM where he talks at length about the cover and articulates what pulled him in - whereas here, it's "Rick Wright first noticed it"
