yeah, wow, three top 40 hits? Even Spandau Ballet managed that many (and a top five hit, to boot). How was this guy supposed to be as big as The Beatles, again? Did he corner the LP market or something?

RIAA says two gold albums. Compare this with, say, Ricky Martin, who managed to score three multi-platinum albums besides his ultra-mega-breakthrough pop disc.

Were all these girls just content enough with the spreads in Tigerbeat that they didn't bother to actually buy his music? Maybe girls were smarter back then or something.

there was just a very brief point in time (summer of '77) when pre teen / teenage girls in the uk went crazy for leif. i remember it as a kid being total hysteria - probably the biggest fad since bay city rollermania. but boy, was it short lived.

Were all these girls just content enough with the spreads in Tigerbeat that they didn't bother to actually buy his music?

funnily enough i don't think my leif crazed sister actually bought the records. i think she had wised up after buying a load of crap donnie osmond records a few years earlier.

not that I don't believe you guys, I'm sure that if you lived through Garretsteria it was an unforgettable moment in our respective nations' history, I just find it interesting how little evidence of it remains today.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:35 (eighteen years ago) link

there really was a brief bit of hysteria but maybe it was actually '79 rather than '77. the video of i was made for dancin' (leif on the beach) is permanently etched into my memory (unfortunately).

According to the article Leif had "a history of drug issues" - it then goes on to mention 2 (two!) occasions where he was ALLEGED to have been either buying or using. Some 'history'.

Part of me I feels sorry for him. I have no doubt he had a lot of pressure on him back in '79 when he was, what, 18 or 19? You can too easily see the scenerio, screaming girls, record company Porsche, everything he wants and the hanger-on to get it and as soon as the hits dry up, nothing left. He's obviously got some issues and needs some help, which I hope he gets.

And the other side of me thinks - hot girls, great drugs, porsches...fck him! I've never had those things...send him down!

No, but really, help is what he needs...or a better way of getting drugs.

sold a few LG albums when I worked in the record store, not as many as Shaun Cassidy and Andy Gibb though. in the New York Daily News this AM Leif's mom is quoted and she blames his habit on the Rolling Stones...

"You ready for me to drop a bomb on you, man? You saved my life that night" has been permanently etched into my brain thanks to a misspent youth of Behind the Music watchage.

I don't act 40 and I don't look 40. Age is a state of mind, you can stagnate or just continue.

I don't look too different. I just look a little older.

uhhh...

sorry, Leif, I dunno what to tell you

"I Was Made For Dancing" was better than anything Shaun Cassidy ever did, if you ask me! (Definitely not up to Bay City Rollers standards, tho.)

Those old-school videos are so disorienting - they literally used videotape, which doesn't deteriorate like film, so they look as clean as though they were just shot last week, but for the jaw-dropping hairstyles and clothing.

Watching this Behind the Music now. "For Leif, the party never stopped." I'm ready for Roland drop that bomb on me...
