thanks, Chris. Made my day/weekend/holiday break.

I recently read _Point at Which Creation Begins_ the history of the BAG, whence Hemphill and Lake and Parran and Shaw et al. The original issue of Dogon A.D. was on mbari Records, which may be controlled by the Hemphill estate.

More later, but thank you, thank you, thank you.

fourteen years pass...

Hello, ILM. Been a while.

I discovered the BAG record "In Paris Aries 1973" in a pile of moldering vinyl donations to the library I recently 9at the time) started working.
It sparked a serious interest in that whole scene. I found PINT AT WHICH CREATION BEGINS in the library catalog and ate it up. Fell hard for DOGN AD and discovered Art Ensemble of Chicago and the AACM all over again. Turned out that a few of the players in BAG attended the University where my library is located.

A few months later, we hired a new director. In getting to know each other, I mentioned the BAG record and my growing interest in St. Louis jazz.
Turns out our new director was in grade school with Joseph Bowie and used to attend BAG events in the city. Discovering this music felt fated. Apparently, the BAG documentary is now streaming online as part of a program through St. Louis's New Music Circle.

Just wanted to share that.

DC saxophonist Andrew White recently passed. He played with Julius Hemphill live and on a few albums

two months pass...

There's an amazing Hemphill box set out this week from New World Records: The Boyé Multi-National Crusade for Harmony. Seven CDs of previously unreleased material in all kinds of configurations: trios, quartets, quintets, an entire disc of Hemphill duos with cellist Abdul Wadud...it's on a level with the Holy Ghost Albert Ayler box from ages ago in terms of "holy shit!" factor. Mine just arrived in today's mail; I'm gonna be swimming around in it for a while. Get yours here (physical or digital), if you're interested.
