Oh, wait. Maybe, hm, dunno.

Zed Szetlian (Finn MacCool), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:40 (eighteen years ago) link

The band on this record recorded an album under a different name that I've wanted to hear for a while. Can't remember their name. The other records released as "Archie Bell and the Drells," I think, feature a different band (but same singer(s)).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 July 2005 02:52 (eighteen years ago) link

the drells' gamble & huff records are also awsome, but very different

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Sunday, 10 July 2005 03:14 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't even think discussion is necessary. total classic. either way, does anyone else recall the episode of the simpsons where homer is on the street with a full body suit of drums and cymbals and tells the crowd that he's about to perform "tighten up" and when he does he just gets his ass kicked? classic as well.

"Tighten up on that organ now"

I'm in middle school, Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:26 (eighteen years ago) link

fuckin shame this wasn't recorded about 6 years later when we could have had the monster 12" extended 11 minute mix

jared, Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic, and I can't imagine who's going to say otherwise. I even like the YMO cover version. For songs that introduce the instruments, I can't think of a better one, not "Dance To The Music" - not even "Cool Jerk," although it comes close.

k/l (Ken L), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, found it. The name of the band that plays on this record is the T.S.U. Tornados.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 July 2005 04:54 (eighteen years ago) link

This is a joke thread, right? Archie Bell is the OG Houston So Real.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Dud.

Naw, course not, just making sure you were paying attention. I can never resist those "Dance To The Music"-style introduce-the-instruments soul numbers. (Partly because they remind us of a time when the R&B charts featured hits played by actual musicians on actual instruments...but nevermind)

I remember that Simpsons episode! ("I'm Archie Bell, and I'm also the Drells!") If memory serves, Homer was actually attacked by an Italian organ grinder's monkey.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:43 (eighteen years ago) link

How about the Nazz's "Loosen Up?"

walter kranz (walterkranz), Sunday, 10 July 2005 05:58 (eighteen years ago) link

i've heard this in two different movies in the past day!

Josh (Josh), Sunday, 10 July 2005 07:11 (eighteen years ago) link

If memory serves, Homer was actually attacked by an Italian organ grinder's monkey.

Oh man, you're right. It doesn't get funnier than that.

Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe (Plastic Gas Booby Trap), Sunday, 10 July 2005 11:28 (eighteen years ago) link

that scene is great, as is the one in another episode where groundskeeper willy does a one-man band version of "she's a maniac"

Ô¿Ô (eman), Sunday, 10 July 2005 12:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I used to work with his son, who was also named Archie. Whenever he was introduced to a client, as soon as the client heard the name, they would immediately launch into the song.
Poor guy.

Classic.

Not Thaat Chuck, Sunday, 10 July 2005 12:49 (eighteen years ago) link

If memory serves, Homer was actually attacked by an Italian organ grinder's monkey.

I always thought that guy was none other than Joe Dolce (of "Shaddap You Face" fame). He says "What'sa matta you, you crazy kid?" just like in the song, and Homer's response is "Buzz off, Giuseppe." just like in the song.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 10 July 2005 12:56 (eighteen years ago) link

"Here I Go Again" > "Tighten Up".

WHO'S WITH ME?

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Sunday, 10 July 2005 12:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic, as is "Loosen Up" by the Nazz.

JAS, Sunday, 10 July 2005 13:36 (eighteen years ago) link

the "d" part, totally unnecessary.

my favorite thing is that they play this all the time in the grocery store, so i'm like tightening up in the store as i'm shopping.

simpsons reference noted and appreciated.

all pre-1999 simpsons references=totally classic.

Jeanne (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 10 July 2005 13:47 (eighteen years ago) link

Great track, even when Janet interpolates.

WHO'S WITH ME?

maybe me! "here i go again" is great. so is "there's gonna be a showdown."

Sign me up, Snrub. And lets hear it for 'Don't let love get you down' (as well as the two that Amateurist said).

Yes Showdown shakes the floor too!

Telegram Sam, Monday, 11 July 2005 04:43 (eighteen years ago) link

i love all the songs it inspired too, like "the funky 16 corners."

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 11 July 2005 04:51 (eighteen years ago) link

oh man the 'showdown' lp has been reissued with 15 bonus tracks! i'm all over that.

that record, strangely enough, was the soundtrack to a few days i spent in nyc ca. 1997. i bought it for 50 cents somewhere in manhattan and kept playing it over and over again while making thanksgiving dinner in a friend's apartment.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:15 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway my favorite ab&the drells record is probably 'i just can't stop dancing'

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 11 July 2005 05:17 (eighteen years ago) link

the Benny Gordon version is a lot better than the original IMO...

the live James Brown version and The Bamboos version are both great

michael2 (michael2), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Is this the 60s reggae track that goes "Why don't you tighten up, tighten up, tighten up, Baby?".

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:47 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway my favorite ab&the drells record is probably 'i just can't stop dancing'

love that part where he forgoes his lunchtime cheeseburger & malt in favor of hitting the dancefloor.

"Tighten Up" is deathless, but my fave AB&TD is "Soul City Walk."

Archie Bell: damn good at finding backing bands. For the 80s groove Archie Bell, check out "Strategy" on TSOP.

I used to think it said:

Hi everybody
I'm Archie Bell AND the Drells
From Houston, Texas

Which is why I used to laugh hysterically at the Simpson's flashback that had Homer playing the one-man-band contraption while singing this.

Sad day when I found out the real lyrics.

The Tightening It Up comp is great from beginning to end.

The Day The World Turned Dayglo Redd (Ken L), Thursday, 30 March 2006 11:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic, of course, but anyway - I remember reading somewhere (probably AMG?) that after this and "Gonna Be A Showdown," Archie Bell was drafted; in his absence, the songs climbed the charts and the nation was plagued by small-time acts claiming to be Archie Bell and the Drells, to capitalize on the success of the singles. THAT makes the Simpsons bit about three times as funny as it already was - the implication is that Homer is actually attempting to convince these passersby that he is Archie Bell, and also the Drells!

And he keeps playing the riff while he's being attacked by the monkey! God, what a great scene. "Dad, we're talking about whether I can get a job." "Gig, son. When you're a musician, a job is called a gig!"

Doctor Casino Is On Tour, Thursday, 30 March 2006 21:39 (eighteen years ago) link

The drum break on the James Brown version of this is amazingly drum n' bass. Not, like, a breakbeat that's all set for chopping and speeding up, it's ALREADY THERE.

I just nominated this for the 60's poll.

Okay, here's a question:

'I Can't Stop Dancin' and 'Can't Take My Eyes off of You' (ie-- Eddy Arnold, Frankie Valli, Lauryn Hill) are SO SIMILAR that it blows my mind. Does anybody else hear this? I just can't figure out which came first, though it seems like it might be too close to call-- that is, Bob Crewe & co. had their composition of 'Can't Take My Eyes...' performed first in 1969 or thereabouts. Whereas Archie Bell & the Drells came out with 'I Can't Stop Dancin' in summer of 1968, from what I can tell. What's the deal?

trees (treesessplode), Friday, 7 July 2006 16:42 (seventeen years ago) link

On the first (stateside) volume of Pop A Paris, there's a French version of "I Can't Stop Dancing" ("Qu'est-Ce Que J'Ai Dansé!") by David Alexandre Winter that's so over the top Tom Jones would find it distasteful.

"Hi everybody, I'm Archie Bell and the Drells..."

Other "recipe funk" tracks:

King Curtis - Memphis Soul Stew
Sly Stone - Dance to the Music

And my obligatory Miami Bass post - Tighten Up was the base sample for Missy Mist's Make it Mellow.

I'm scared by the thought that a generation is growing up thinking "Tighten Up" is merely just the title of a Black Keys song.

Went to the local monthly All-Vinyl Soul Night last night, and a good way into the evening they dropped this in with an already fever-pitch dance floor going, and holy hell is this track straight fire.

On a related note, earlier in the day I picked up a copy of the TSU Toronados (the backing band on the original "TU") comp One Flight Too Many on CD--it's quite terrific!

White guys from Nashville? You mean that weird cover song on Hit Records? I’ve been curious about that.

Yeah, man! There were nine white boys from Nashville putting out records pretending to be Archie Bell and the Drells! This is before the Internet; no one knew what we looked like. [Points at Tighten Up LP cover on table.] See, that was one of the first records to show a picture of a black band, but you notice we’re on the backside. They had those cartoons on the front. I didn’t know anything about the cartoons. I mean, at least they’re black…
