What's the standout quality of that one?

JC-L (JC-L), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Frozen Orange is not typical sounding Kilgour as Lambchop are his (very idiosyncratic) backing band, not 100% sure what I make of it really. I think this is Kilgour on top form: Today is Gonna be Mine. The Clean compilation on Merge is the one to go for.

dave amos, Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:44 (nineteen years ago) link

i only listened to it once while at work, but i just liked the songs, i think. i guess i shouldve had better specifics before calling it "really great", but i remember loving it.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:46 (nineteen years ago) link

sorry! wasn't trying to pour cold water over your enthusiasm, just undecided on it myself after 1 or 2 listens. But this often happens with stuff that I go on to adore.

dave amos, Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Don't listen to me, I just cannot fucking STAND the Bats outside of two/three tracks

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Bats: Daddy's Highway is pretty good, as is the Law of Things. I think the latter has been discontinued by Flying Nun (or whoever they're owned by now). I'd get the most recent comp, as I really think their singles are better than any one album.

Haven't heard the Frozen Orange LP yet. Who put it out?

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I find the Bats rather quaint, actually.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Haven't heard the Frozen Orange LP yet. Who put it out?

Merge. I don't think it's been released yet, though.

JC-L (JC-L), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Anthology! (with most of Vehicle), and a vote for the Bat's Daddy's Highway-- at first listen I thought it sounded like folk singing at Christian Youth Camp, and still do. It's good AND quaint. Today Is Gonna Be Mine is great Kilgour-- And if you can get a bootleg of any of the Clean's live shows from a couple of years ago, those have Crazy Horsish extended jams. (I didn't like their new record much either)

Donald, Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Get Compilation by the Clean, although I think most (all?) of those tracks are on Anthology so get that. The Clean may be my favorite band.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:32 (nineteen years ago) link

In the past I had one of those crazy crazy fixations on New Zealand bands (mainly of the Flying Nun variety, but it extended to the noise set also). Now I know nothing about NZ music, and I'm now up for a job there (at Victoria University). Any tips on new and exciting things there would be appreciated.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:40 (nineteen years ago) link

The Great Unwashed CD is probably up there with the best of the Clean stuff, actually some it may be Clean songs?

And the Stephen CD has some great simple pop songs in a Vehicle-esque vein, though my love for it may just be nostalgia for 1995 on my part.

Didn't like the Heavy Eights CD so much, but thought A Feather in the Engine was "ace." So am excited about the new one. Is it on soleseaq yet?

s downes (sdownes), Thursday, 19 August 2004 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I haven't seen it out yet, but it probably will be soon.

JC-L (JC-L), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Flying Nun is reissuing heaps of stuff (due in part to dearth of good new material, no doubt). Apparently, many comps have been remastered.

Guymauve (Guymauve), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I hope they reissue that Stephen CD. I've been looking for that forever. Here Come the Cars, too.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

his solo record First Steps and False Alarms, out on Ajax, is pretty nice. it's in a v. lofi vain, and not terribly unlike the bulk of the great unwashed stuff (which i love). ajax isn't around any more, though, so i don't know about availability.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

first steps is awfully uneven though, the enthology is the current best place to start with for the clean, the first cd being one of the greatest slabs of new zealand rock ever cmpiled. the clean are still amazing live, though they're albums have taken a skewered psych-pop direction. i really liked the last heavy eights release though, and im looking forward to frozen orange. oh btw, the clean are prolly my favorite band of all time.

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:53 (nineteen years ago) link

woah, what the hell happened to my spelling/grammar..

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

another vote for here come the cars.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:54 (nineteen years ago) link

btw - check out mike brassell, aka mike hex's lo-fi stuff. mike was a good mate who died earlier this year, a couple weeks after playing with david down in dunedin on a barge in a bay not too far from port chalmers.

his old band squirm, solo recordings as michael j. hex, and in the duo the hiss explosion with peter mitchell are all uniformly brilliant, with the hiss explosions last album '66' (which actually included a kilgour cover) is a tasty slice of lo-fi pop and guitar shimmer, simply wonderful stuff.

mike ran 'noseflute' recordings here in christchurch for many years and was an important figure in the scuzz-rock scene of the mid 1990s (ape management, squirm, spacedust, loves ugly children etc), and in moving to dunedin a couple years back, he took over arc life recordings - leading to a real revitalisation of this top-notch label before his untimely death.

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:14 (nineteen years ago) link

All I know is that Clean Anthology on Merge and the whole thing is fucking fantastic!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:20 (nineteen years ago) link

two years pass...
Saw The Clean on there Bangers and Mash New Zealand tour on March 16th at the San Francisco
Bath House on Cuba Street,Wellington city.
Superb, just stunning after all these years I got to a Clean gig.
They were great with the crowd. No Tally Ho or Beatnik, but that did not worry anyone I went with.
Just classic Clean live.

love 'a feather in the engine.' and it hasn't been mentioned yet, but 'getaway' is actually really good! the clean+related was my pavement.

strgn, Monday, 19 March 2007 04:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Wow, a Clean thread I never posted to! First disc of Anthology or Compilation is the best NZ album ever (former has "End Of My Dream" & "Thumbs Off", latter has "Art School" & "Hold Onto The Rail". Tough call!); the later stuff's totally OK, works really well live. Saw them two nights ago at the Auckland gig - they played "I'm In Love With These Times"! Fuckin' aye! ++ was Hamish Kilgour's 50th birthday, Chris Knox wheeled out a cake during the second encore.

etc, Monday, 19 March 2007 04:54 (seventeen years ago) link

here come the cars is the best thing he's ever done. the stephen ep is also pretty great. the extra songs on that comp weren't worth much. great unwashed is also totally classic. all clean albums are actually pretty great too except for maybe getaway which was a bit of a drag, there should be more robert scott vocals on clean records. the bats are demoing for their next album already, alright. haven't heard the past few dk albums because the heavy eights one wasn't so great and i lost interest.

keythkeyth, Monday, 19 March 2007 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to see them on Friday, along with the Chills and a bunch of bands I've never heard.

clotpoll, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 01:16 (seventeen years ago) link

The Far Now (DK's latest record on Merge) is surprisingly great. Very subdued and beautiful at points.

kwhitehead, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 04:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah--the Far Now is awesome--really worth checking out for anyone who's written off solo Kilgour. More acoustic than the Clean (or the Heavy Eights) but very very nice sounding. And there are a couple moments of really beautiful electric guitar playing too--see the closing solo of "Yenisei", which may be my favorite musical moment of 07 thus far.

tylerw, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

modern rock has over the years become my very favorite. and it was my least when i first heard it. such is the way.

andrew m., Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Word has it that he's bringing a bunch of NZers as his backing back this US tour, and recent Australian shows were amazing by all accounts. When I first saw him in 94 open for Pavement/GBV in Philly he blew both bands away ,and all his songs from Here Come the Cars and Sugarmouth took on this revved-up form and really just steamrolled over everything. It was like part Who electric mayhem without the prancing around, part Roy Harper (if he was playing electric) the way the reverb just enveloped everything and let DK just go to town on guitar. Really unexpected, considering how familiar I was with those records. Have also seen him accompanied by Mad Scene/Barabara Manning/Lambchop folks over the years and shows were equally good but different.

Brian Turner, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

i saw him open for pavement in memphis on that tour. all i had at that time was a cassette of vehicle bought for a quarter from a camelot records cutout bin and which i played the shit out of. so i wasn't quite prepared for what he'd be like. he was rad and super nice when i said hello after the show.

andrew m., Wednesday, 21 March 2007 14:59 (seventeen years ago) link

gah, i just looked at his US tour dates and he's not coming anywhere near me. I need to move. To Lawrence, Kansas apparently.

tylerw, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

The Clean were awesome. The new sort-of-untitled song they played sounded really good. The ending jam on "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" probably wasn't all that great for my hearing.

Just saw David Kilgour and the 8's at High Dive in Seattle. It was Halloween. David dressed up as an emo rocker, except he just wore an Emo Philips black mop wig and used the phrase "fucking geezers" every other phrase during the banter. Homer Simpson came on stage to dance on the third-to-last song. Excellent show, although could have been more attended. Ah well. David is one of the sweetest and friendliest people I've ever met. Good times.

DON'T MISS THE KILGOUR LIVE

Mackro Mackro, Thursday, 1 November 2007 07:04 (sixteen years ago) link

i'll be seeing him in Denver (oddly enough at a place called the Hi-Dive) this Saturday -- can't wait! And uhh, if any of you are in the Front Range area, be sure to make it for the opening band, the Magic Mice. That's my band ... Sorry for the shameless plug, but what the heck. 10pm!

tylerw, Thursday, 1 November 2007 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Kilgour was indeed awesome, though the crowd was ridiculously sparse. Great band, beautiful guitar playing, warm vibe. The whole thing makes me want to go on some sort of rant about all the crappy indie rock bands who sell out places four times as big as the hi-dive, but I won't waste your time ... To repeat what Mackro Mackro said above, DON'T MISS THE KILGOUR LIVE. I think he's swinging around to the east coast now ... And the Clean are playing in NYC in a couple of weeks too! Goddamn.

tylerw, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Grrrr, I will have to miss his Wednesday November 14th Washington DC show at DC9.

New Clean album - "Mister Pop" is at least half utter brilliance and the rest is solid and will likely grow on me.

I pulled out Stephen's "Radar Of Small Dogs" and it's really great, I had completely forgotten it. Pity Flying Nun can't get their act together and reissue more from the vaults.

Ok, I wasn't going to say anything, but one of the Clean guys is actually sending their kid (grandkid?) to the same music camp as my son this week. I'm still trying to bump into him. At least now I have something to ask about.

It was very strange looking at the camp sign-in sheet this past Tuesday, recognizing the name, and then realizing that nobody there had the slightest idea who he was.

those seem to be . . . curiously small venues? i probably have no idea what's what, but i figured they'd at least be in the cat's cradle/black cat rather than local 506/r&r hotel

506 is a super small venue! I held the door for Michelle Williams there once. Like 100 years ago.

curmudgeon, Monday, 10 February 2014 14:50 (ten years ago) link

Been revisiting the DK & Heavy Eights recently. So much confidence. I think one big change for me, now, is that I don't enjoy the second, long half of "Diggin for Gold," the big heavy Les Paul workout that takes it to the end. I never minded back then, but now I could listen to the first part of the song on repeat at length and be happy. But it is a big heavy guitar workout album. In the day, I kind of overlooked "Waveboarder," but now it's the thing I replay most often.
