It would seem i'll be seeing them tonight with my mum, passed the tour bus on the way into work and felt inexplicably star-struck.

i'm jealous. while you're looking sombre to the hissing menace of "being boiled", i'll be stuck at work (looking, er, sombre).

to make things worse, my friends' band, hoboken, are supporting. and i'm missing the whole thing. gah.

take some pictures :)

I've got this camera (which used to belong to my grandpa), not sure what kind of pics i'd get with it as i'm pretty crap at photography.

They were great. I think i may have shown myself up by shrieking like a loon everytime they played something by the original line up.

Jotted down the setlist, will post it in a bit.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

the set list:

tell me when
heart like a wheel
the things that dreams are made of
louise
marrianne
synth city?
the lebanon
all i ever wanted
sound of the crowd
rock and roll is dead?
empire state human
love is all that matters
human
love action
open your heart
mirror man
(keep feeling) fascination
don't you want me
-------------------
being boiled
electric dreams

coo, thanks leigh! what did you think of hoboken?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 11:30 (eighteen years ago) link

They were pretty good, my mother was very impressed, she liked the singing and thought they were very smart.

Btw, how tall is mr oakey? He looked enormous from where we were sitting. I assumed he was about 6'2 but on last night's evidence i'd say he was taller.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 11:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't even think he's as tall as 6'2" - he didn't seem much taller than me when I stood next to him at Kraftwerk.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:16 (eighteen years ago) link

and thought they were very smart

hahahah! hoo.

i thought phil O's "height" legendarily came from the tallest heels he could find?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Synth City? is Sin City from 'Secrets'. Synth City is a great title though!

Dr.C, Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:49 (eighteen years ago) link

He's in very good shape for a 50 year old.

I haven't got Secrets so i was just guessing at the titles.

Susan sang lead vocals on 'Love is all that matters', it sounded better than the recorded version as i think Phil sounds rather strained singing it.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 12:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm jealous too! I

alext (alext), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 13:22 (eighteen years ago) link

During 'being boiled' there was footage of silkworms spliced together with Nazi rallies. Is sericulture used as a metaphor for fascism?

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 13:38 (eighteen years ago) link

heh, only if phil's rewriting history. IIRC his explanation for the lyric was: "i read a book on buddhism and got really confused".

The evening news are a bit stingy with their stars

**I haven't got Secrets**

Bloody hell, leigh! GO! BUY! NOW! It's colossal!

(I keep saying this on ILM, but there's not much evidence that anyone has actually done so.)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I will. I was explaining their situation to my 58 year old mother (who thinks philip's a bit of a fox'. She reckons that the key to them regaining chart success is to reissue 'electric dreams'. I didn't have the heart to point out that it wasn't a league tune in the first place.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

x-post oops, please overlook my punctuation failure

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

i, er, haven't bought "secrets" either. and you've already shouted at me for this, Dr C. i think leigh and i might have talked about this in the pub on saturday (if not, i meant to).

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Did I shout? Sorry, but it's such a great record.

Used and new from £4.99 or so on Amazon.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll have to wait till next year cos i'm stoney at the moment. I'll have to keep an eye out for Crash in the bargain bins. I wonder if haggling would work, i'd like to pay as little as possible as i'm aware it's a stinker.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:18 (eighteen years ago) link

I was also going to try and pick up Earcom 1 because it's got another Graph song on it. It's priced around £30 on froogle but the bidding at ebay is only at a fiver just now and the auction closes in 6 hours, pity i don't have a paypal account.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

What happened to the rest of my post earlier? Maybe I used silly brackets and confused the interweb. Don't think I said anything interesting, mind.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

oh, i thought you'd just got over-excited or something and had to go and mop up.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 17:10 (eighteen years ago) link

and woah, earcom 1 ... SIGN UP FOR A PAYPAL ACCOUNT NOW AND GET BIDDING!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 17:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I've emailed my brother and asked him to bid for it. I'll go to a tenner, there's only one other bid so far.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 14 December 2005 17:30 (eighteen years ago) link

Some lucky bugger got Earcom 1 for £6.50.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 15 December 2005 09:38 (eighteen years ago) link

this is where i'd love to go: "YES IT WAS ME LOL PWND." but it wasn't. honest.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:18 (eighteen years ago) link

The wee bruv will be getting an earbashing when i see him!

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:28 (eighteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
Earcom 1's come up again, i've put a bid in myself this time.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 5 January 2006 13:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Pah, i was outbid by £1.50, how annoying.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 6 January 2006 08:50 (eighteen years ago) link

one month passes...
Earcom 1 came up yet again, i won it this time. Including postage from the US it came to about £15. Seems a bit ironic that they'll be posting it back to where it came from originally.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 17 February 2006 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

twelve years pass...

in case anyone cares, they do play Being Boiled on the current tour. First song of the encore and a crowd-cleaner for sure leaving only the die hards. Also "they" a bit of a misnomer since all the music is prepared and played by three hired hands (who are pretty good).

akm, Monday, 14 May 2018 12:09 (five years ago) link

has that not been the case for three decades tho

chilis=lyrics...hypocrits (sic), Monday, 14 May 2018 14:44 (five years ago) link
