this seems a little extreme, below 70 is "dangerous cold".
its 54 out there in the ocean today

yeah you're not going to get hypothermia in 35c water, also it's subjective of course but +30c air feels more than warm - maybe this is for disgusting planet killing savages who have their thermostats cranked to 25c/77f.

to me a stat is just that superfluous extra heating control switch that has been cranked to 30c forever. Going into the sea and rivers without a wet-suit seems like madness. I was getting cramps and severe shudders going waist deep at Newquay during a heatwave, I don't know how people do it.

after she was coaxed into it by a friend, my wife has started going sea swimming most mornings, partly cos of the social side of it and partly cos she's hoping the cold temperatures will have a beneficial effect on her MS, but mostly cos of the thrill she's getting from it. personally i think she's nuts (could possibly tolerate the cold and the wet, but the fucking pebbles are a complete deal breaker), but she always come back so exhilarated, just absolutely buzzing from it

where is your sea?
just wear old trainers no?
― anvil, Tuesday, 4 December 2018 12:11 (five years ago) link
it's the murky waters of the english channel. i guess i could wear shoes, but then i'd have to think of another excuse for not doing it

It was cold. but the bigger problem was it was quite rough, big waves. I didn't feel comfortable with the combination and got myself subbed off

if we have larger waves here, they can sometimes shape the beach so it enters the water at quite a steep angle. no problem getting in though it gets deep quite quickly, but climbing back out again feels pretty desperate to me

swimming in cold water is really exhilarating, it's so hard to get in at first but coming out i feel truly alive. there is a schvitz in town where they have a sauna/steam room on one side and a cold pool (supposedly 40f) on the other, it is the most exhilarating feeling going between the two, the cold pool is an essential part of the experience

would estimate < 10% of those people are going to get any part of their body wet.

that crowded beach pic actually looks like an oppressive and bad use of terra firma to me, if there was about 99% less ppl there it might work for me - but otherwise it looks like a detail from a Bosch hellscape.
