The visuals are obviously great, the shot of the three cardinals smoking outside, the cardinals walking through the courtyard & the light shining in from outside in the Sistine Chapel were all great. Deserves every cinematography award going.

films that would make great hitman levels

secretary of state for fractal pluripotencies (||||||||), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:21 (one month ago) link

I would not award Fiennes for this when he's given at least three great performances in the last 20 years better

this is the same thing again as you concentrating more on the projected cineaste bro audience of nosferatu instead of the movie in that thread, tbh.

its ok to just write about the thing itself man yknow?

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Tuesday, 31 December 2024 23:55 (one month ago) link

this was fun pulp.

please god, save us from movies about cardinals choosing a new pope that are grimly serious. amen.

Liam Neeson would have been a fun bonus cardinal

Wondering about Fiennes' Oscar lock chances is the same phenom.

Fiennes is def a lock for a nom, but Brody prob the front-runner for the win. Anyway, good movie. I had fun.

Sergio Castellitto got aged quite nicely.

was expecting this to be some sub ttoi/death of stalin styled project with the now customary overcooked zings and so forth. It wasn't that at all, thank fuck. It was actually very good!

saw it last night. was expecting the bitchy gossiping from the online chatter, but wasn't expecting how beautiful some of the shots were, or how hard that final twist would hit. the music was great too.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 2 January 2025 18:28 (one month ago) link

also love how the movie establishes lithgow's character as a prissy twit in the first scene, before we're given any real reasons to hate him

voodoo chili, Thursday, 2 January 2025 18:29 (one month ago) link

When has he not played a prissy twit?

Cliffhanger?

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 2 January 2025 19:36 (one month ago) link

even then there's an air of a man who had gotten the wrong end of the stick and had signed up for cliffhanger abbey

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Thursday, 2 January 2025 22:34 (one month ago) link

Watching this movie made me realize that I'm guilty of simony. I have bought Catholic Church relics from a NY purveyor. They are beautiful and meaningful to me. Many came in lockets, a few in monstrances, and one was mounted in a beautiful frame. I have lived with them, contemplated them and displayed them, but now as I'm getting older I don't know who to gift them to. I have a friend who is also interested in them, but I'm not sure he wants mine.

What do you do with stolen Catholic Church relics you bought that you want to pass on?

I bet none of you have ever had this experience

I loved the outcome of this film by the way, it was perfect.

Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:52 (one month ago) link

Relics? like you have a digit of a saint's index finger?

rainbow calx (lukas), Sunday, 5 January 2025 00:59 (one month ago) link

No, just a very tiny piece of cloth or paper or wood presented in an elaborate frame of some sort

But I think these are the kind of relics that are placed under the altar in many Catholic Churches.

Dan S, Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:06 (one month ago) link

I’ll give you $100 for the foreskin of Jesus.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:15 (one month ago) link

The difficulty with buying items from a dealer who represents them as stolen is the lack of provenance. Your relics could be consecrated or they could be fakes. Unless there's some evidence to establish where they came from no church could accept them as objects of veneration. That would be idolatrous! So, you're most likely stuck with trying to re-establish their authenticity on your own dime, or just disposing of them as profane objects, even if they are truly holy relics.

Boy, are you in trouble!

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 5 January 2025 01:33 (one month ago) link

I like my foreskin fried with a mojo dressing.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 January 2025 03:06 (one month ago) link

A perennial problem with relics iirc

this movie was zzz
Even lithgow couldn’t break through the gloom
I don’t think you can count what fiennes did in this as acting
Ending vote implausible

calstars, Sunday, 5 January 2025 19:45 (one month ago) link

^^good reminder to leave positive reviews here every now and then.

This was good. Love a page turner on the big screen. I could have done with a bit more development of Fiennes faith/doubt, but this was more realistic. Photocopying as a plot point never misses.
