I was wrong btw, their paperwork lapsed and they are BYOB until they get their license back

dmr, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

woah your rest. week lunch was way better than mine, phil!!

kuma inn was yum!

also: roll call for woodside thai later this week? thurs, fri or sat?

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Phil that sounds awesome.

Ed, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the only places i'll go have a RW meal are the Danny Meyer places, but the reservations go in like the first 2 mins of the day. EMP, Gramercy Tavern, Union Sq Cafe, are my faves. The Modern and Tabla are nice too

They don't skimp on ingredients like most places (mixed green salad or soup? chicken breast or farmed salmon? gee thanx). I mean they skimp a little since hell its only $24. The lamb sausage I had was fantastic, but the other main course options were a poussin (cornish game hen) or maybe it was poulard or maybe it was just chicken breast... And also a roasted squash, and finally a piece of skate... mostly cheap'ish stuff. The app choices were a sorta-ceviche'ish salmon on an asparagus veloute, bluefin tuna tartare with heirloom tomatoes, and something else. I had the sweetbread ravioli which was SO GOOD.

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

where did you go, tehresa?

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

offal is my kind of skimping.

Ed, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i went to blue water grill (mediocrity revealed above in this thread)

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:59 (fifteen years ago) link

also if you go to one of the good woodside thai places, try to get:

kûng châe náam plaa - its raw shrimp marinated in fish sauce, lime juice, chili, and garlic. its VERY spicy and VERY garlicky and VERY delicious.

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:16 (fifteen years ago) link

ohhh blue water grill.. its one of those stephen hanson B.R. Guest restaurants. very corporate. not surprised you had a mediocre RW lunch

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:17 (fifteen years ago) link

at sripraphai my favorite dishes are the crispy watercress salad and the crispy pork & chinese broccoli

Where in New York can I get a Francesinha?

I was going to suggest the Ironbound District in Newark, but this seems a bit closer:

Virginia Plain, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Onoy on the brunch menu apparently.

ian, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:33 (fifteen years ago) link

if anyone lives in or around ft. greene/clinton hill, chez lola is really nice, and the garden is cute.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:52 (fifteen years ago) link

That isn't terribly far from me.
But the first review on Yelp calls it "tasteless cat food." (which might be better than tasty catfood.)

What did you eat that you liked?

ian, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i will go to sripraphai tomorrow :D

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i can't help but notice that the "tasteless cat food" poster failed to cite any specific examples.

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

lol. it's not tasteless cat food! the lamb tagine is delish, and once i had this amazing halibut/some sort of white fish. i'm going tonight, will report back.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

went to srip last night, I go a lot because I live 10 blocks away. I like most of the thai in the area...poodams, zabb, nusara, chao, arunee etc. My favorite dishes at Srip now are the sweet sausage salad appetizer, it's sweet sausage served with mint, basil, onions, cucumber, tomato in a spicy chili sauce and may be the best thing I've ever eaten.

I'm also obsessed with their Massaman chicken which is unlike any others I've seen elsewhere. It's big chunks of stewed chicken, sometime on the bone, that just falls apart, not like the standard little bits of chicken at most other places.

dan selzer, Saturday, 2 August 2008 14:46 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, reporting back: it was the salmon that i had at Chez Lola, and i had it again, and it was lovely. it was served in a flaky something or other, so if you're not into the breaded thing, it's not for you. also the empinada appetizers are great. i heard very good things about the tuna, the pork chops and the salmon burger is always great.

+ pear martini in the garden = heavenly :D

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 15:21 (fifteen years ago) link

i had a pear martini in a garden (well, backyard) the other night. it was ok.

gabbneb, Saturday, 2 August 2008 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

pear martinis:men::pomegranate martinis:women?

ian, Saturday, 2 August 2008 15:50 (fifteen years ago) link

So recommend me some good cheap places to eat within a reasonable walk of Brooklyn Heights/Borough Hall, and maybe also a couple of more expensive but highly worth it places.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:06 (fifteen years ago) link

real men don't drink flavored martinis (but we will mix them for the ladies)

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:28 (fifteen years ago) link

flavored "martinis" aren't martinis.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:29 (fifteen years ago) link

There are only two sweet drinks I like: mojito and bourbon/ginger.

Most sweet cocktails seem to me like an excuse to spend a lot of money on something that sounds sophisticated but goes down easy as a slurpee.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:31 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean nothing wrong with "goes down easy" - but save yourself the trouble and just have a mid-shelf vodka with juice.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:32 (fifteen years ago) link

mmm

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

I agree w/tehresa. lol chocolate drop "martinis". what's next? peanut butter martinis? tofu martinis? ugh.

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

polish potato vodka martini w/french fry stirrer

m coleman, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

although my friend's mom infuses her own vodka, so you can makes lemon martinis etc. that qualify as real martinis, just with some flava.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 16:53 (fifteen years ago) link

i would like to try making some infusions, but i don't really care for vodka. i generally drink gin martinis.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link

real men don't drink flavored martinis

yeah, i'm not a real man, but i just wanted to try the pear cider in the thing.

gabbneb, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i'd like a pear drink as long as it was not too sweet. i had one at cafeteria once that was ok, but could have been less sweet.

tehresa, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the one i had last night was really not that sweet, which is why i liked it. and it had a bit of cinnamon on the rim which gave it some spice.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 19:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Maya is a wonderful, if expensive, haute Mexican place on the southern tip of the Upper East Side. One of NY's better restaurants

Cool - we're going there for my wife's birthday. I like pretty much all Mexican food from cheap & authentic to cheap & inauthentic to the more expensive varieties.

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

did I say that? i don't know about the latter statement, but it's definitely good and interesting, though I dunno the impact of the guy's opening an SF (?) place.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:11 (fifteen years ago) link

I think that was you, yes. No back-pedaling now. "One of NY's better restaurants" only means in the top 50th percentile right?

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

it probably meant higher than that, but i imagine it's still the best haute mex in NY. consider getting the huitlacoche dumplings.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Fatoosh on Hicks at Atlantic is good middle eastern takeout (i survived one winter on their lentil soup). Actually almost all of the middle eastern places on Atlantic are good and worth trying, I just always went to Fatoosh cause it was close and very very good.

The supreme slice (fresh mozz and basil) at My Little Pizzeria on Court St is good.

Montague St Bagels are some of the best in nyc.

Henry's End on Henry St is fancy and supposed to be really good.

More of a walk, but Hanco's on Bergen and Smith has good vietnamese sandwiches.

mizzell, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the most haute-Mexican place I've eaten at is Mi Cocina in the West Village. I thought it was a bit weird that they give you bread while you're waiting for your food, instead of the traditional chips & salsa - but it goes with the tablecloth & wine glasses ambiance.

o. nate, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:40 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh i have to try Fatoosh! have you had the fatoosh salad from Fatoosh? it better be good ;)

Surmounter, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

yes the fatoosh salad is quite good. tey make excellent pitas.

mizzell, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 15:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Went to sakagura last night, food a little hit and miss but the hits were awesome, highly recommend the Kimchi-don set (shaimi and kimchi mixed together over rice), Buta Kakuni (melt in the mouth stewed pork belly), and some roast duck that I forget the name of. All washed down with sake tasting sets, very easy to drink and spend a lot in there, attentive waitress who was able to tell something about each sake. All finished off with black sesame creme brule which was fabulous.

Ed, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:25 (fifteen years ago) link

buta kakuni is one of my favorite things ever.

bell_labs, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:41 (fifteen years ago) link

I wd try Fatoosh's lentil soup, I like lentils. For Mid-Eastern over there I usually hit the Bedouin Tent but that's just familiarity -- it IS pretty good, but I'm not sure it's The Best. Freshly baked flatbread, though.

Laurel, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

The merguez sandwhich from Beduin Tent is a disgusting, delicious mess of meat and I love it.
