Check out this cool bike, behind this cool card outside my store.

In fact every photo in this thread has an interesting vehicle in it.

how many people fit in that thing?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 20:22 (fourteen years ago) link

two, i think. though it looked like there was good storage place in the back for large pets.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 20:23 (fourteen years ago) link

i saw the guy leaving and i just didn't feel like asking him a million questions about his vehicle.

they are having some benefit road race here. maybe he's a part of it.

lol, the road race is a benefit for some children's charity, and there is this HUGE banner over main street that reads:

CRUIZIN' FOR KIDZ!

Hmm.

tehresa, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

i wonder if it floats?

i dunno, it looked homemade to me.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:32 (fourteen years ago) link

"three wheel wood car"

having known more than a few, I kinda hate novelty car owners. almost as much as novelty bikers.

go Nick go! Scrub that paint! Scrub it!! Yeah!! (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i've got a thing about those guys - and it's almost always guys - who ride those bikes flat on their backs. i forget what they are called. it's irrational of me. those guys always have "interesting" beards and mustaches too.

i've probably even started a thread on it. i should shut up already. i just KNOW they are smug about their cool lying horizontally in the road bikes!

(they scare the hell out of me too. who wants to be eye level with a truck's tires on a busy road???)

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link

and i'm sorry if anyone here has one of these ridiculous bicycles! i'm sure you are a lovely person! with a very interesting beard!

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:50 (fourteen years ago) link

I think that Pash might ride a recumbent bike (?)

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:53 (fourteen years ago) link

i love you pash!

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:57 (fourteen years ago) link

are you talking about a recumbent bicycle

xpost

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

of course i was talking about AMERICAN people who ride these bikes. (*hides under bed*)

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, those things.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

what's wrong with riding a recumbent bicycle? It's not my thing, but it does no one any harm.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 21:59 (fourteen years ago) link

i have nothing against office chair bikes though...

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:00 (fourteen years ago) link

they scare me! people ride them on the road! with cars all around them. and everybody i see riding one looks like a math professor. and i have inadequacy issues about math.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:02 (fourteen years ago) link

no no, scarier is recumbent bikes with TODDLER SIDECAR!

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:02 (fourteen years ago) link

they're actually superior to regular bikes in several regards. a lot of people who ride them love riding bicycles, and prefer recumbents for various health and comfort reasons. the design is also used a lot for bikes for the disabled. so you should feel bad. really, really bad.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Wow, that office chair thing!

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:03 (fourteen years ago) link

and you can't claim they're dorky. check this out!

i know i know i'm rotten.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:04 (fourteen years ago) link

does seem like a great way for a cab to hit you at night though tbh.

ian, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:05 (fourteen years ago) link

but see that's why i get the smug vibe. like: ha, you sad people with your old-fashioned upright bikes. you have no idea how much better these bikes are aerodynamically and for your back, etc, etc.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:06 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah, but anyone on a recumbent is almost guaranteed to have crazy reflective and light equipment. goes with the territory.

i've seen people riding right next to 18 wheelers!!! in philly! on insanely busy streets.

okay, i've changed my mind. these people are the bravest people on earth. demented, but brave.

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I have ridden a recumbent. Sniff.

The Lion's Mane Jellyfish, pictured here with its only natural predator (Laurel), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:08 (fourteen years ago) link

sometimes they have those 8 foot high flag things. ups the smugness factor.

I don't know whether Ed's desire for a recumbent bike came before or after the fulfilled aspiration for OTT facial hair, or whether that just puts him in the demographic crosshairs.

gossip and complaints (suzy), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:09 (fourteen years ago) link

these people are called "freds" BTW.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

"a 'fred' is a cyclist who has a ton of cycling gear, especially of the utilitarian "uncool" kind. The gear and bike may be put together by kludgey solutions, like duct-taped flashlights to the handlebar. [1]. This type of fred is a bike geek who likes/needs lots of gear (even if it is modified stuff not intended for bikes) that a racer would never use, no matter what roadie cyclists or others think. Freds of this type can be well aware of their fredness, once they are aware of the concept, and often embrace it wholeheartedly." - Wikipedia

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

squat toilets are da bomb. seriously superior sanitation.

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

good for flexibility too

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link

my late uncle was a user of dvorak and i never cease to be impressed by people who learn it and use it. also it's sometimes hilarious to watch them try typing on a qwerty keypad. xp to JL

ian, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:22 (fourteen years ago) link

i know people with compost toilets. those are eerie. it takes, um, a long time for things to fall...

scott seward, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:23 (fourteen years ago) link

is that like a hole in the ground?

Super Cub, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 22:26 (fourteen years ago) link
