CONCLAVE, the Ralph Fiennes film where he plays a tortured cardinal with Ralph Fiennes face

I read the book of this when it came out and it wasn’t super memorable (apart from a gesture I shall simply refer to as 🫴🏻🤌🏻) but I will 100% watch this because it had a lot in it that would film better if cut down. Also, aesthetic game is huge.

Ten minutes too long (what else is new?) and the eventual papal candidate is NO surprise, but it's schlocky fun.

It should go without saying: a couple plot twists are unbelievable.

Thirty years ago someone like Harold Becker or Phillip Noyce would've directed it and released in spring and no one would at all be talking about it as an Oscar frontrunner, but here we are.

It looks like a fun ride (regardless of whether or not it’s a good movie).

Ha, good comparison. My mom and I saw it over the holiday break, as I figured she would love it and boy was I ever right. (She claims to have clocked the basics of The Twist about halfway through and I've no reason to doubt.)

I like that it's so into being fun. Self-aware without being meta about it, but everyone hamming it up the right amount. I would watch a 3-season series with that set of characters.

And yes, visually elegant too.

The Sistine Chapel filled with dust and light pouring in from the upper right was great, just barely held back from being over the top.

The visuals are obviously great, the shot of the three cardinals smoking outside, the cardinals walking through the courtyard & the light shining in from outside in the Sistine Chapel were all great. Deserves every cinematography award going.

saw it last night. was expecting the bitchy gossiping from the online chatter, but wasn't expecting how beautiful some of the shots were, or how hard that final twist would hit. the music was great too.

also love how the movie establishes lithgow's character as a prissy twit in the first scene, before we're given any real reasons to hate him

Watching this movie made me realize that I'm guilty of simony. I have bought Catholic Church relics from a NY purveyor. They are beautiful and meaningful to me. Many came in lockets, a few in monstrances, and one was mounted in a beautiful frame. I have lived with them, contemplated them and displayed them, but now as I'm getting older I don't know who to gift them to. I have a friend who is also interested in them, but I'm not sure he wants mine.

What do you do with stolen Catholic Church relics you bought that you want to pass on?

No, just a very tiny piece of cloth or paper or wood presented in an elaborate frame of some sort

But I think these are the kind of relics that are placed under the altar in many Catholic Churches.

The difficulty with buying items from a dealer who represents them as stolen is the lack of provenance. Your relics could be consecrated or they could be fakes. Unless there's some evidence to establish where they came from no church could accept them as objects of veneration. That would be idolatrous! So, you're most likely stuck with trying to re-establish their authenticity on your own dime, or just disposing of them as profane objects, even if they are truly holy relics.

This was good. Love a page turner on the big screen. I could have done with a bit more development of Fiennes faith/doubt, but this was more realistic. Photocopying as a plot point never misses.
