The dumbest part is that anyone with half a brain could have anticipated most of the questions, it's not like they were pulling out gotcha questions about soybean subsidies

I see various online right-wing doofuses excited that there's been a big drop in Democratic mail-in ballot applications in Pa this year from 2020 — somehow not comprehending that the 2020 surge was driven entirely by COVID. A lot of those people are still voting this year, just not by mail.

whereas of course the Republican voters were ignoring COVID measures to vote in person

Is it ghoulish to point out that a lot of the 2020 GOP cohort succumbed to Covid and pandemic-adjacent conditions if my own mom was one of them?

I looked it up, and Stephens was actually calling for Biden to step down two weeks *before* the June debate -- but he wanted him replaced with Josh Shapiro or Gretchen Whitmer.

that's disturbing af

i listened to an interesting podcast recently about the children's book "if you give a mouse a cookie" and how it has been used to indoctrinate people to the right wing concept of reducing/eliminating/stigmatizing the social safety net.

seems like a lot from that poll!!

It’s because the Ds have ceded the point to the Republicans and not hit back with a strong defense of immigrants.

I’m more disturbed why Harris/Walz have been missing from this whole Ohio thing. Seems like a great time to defend immigrants!

There were post-mortem discussions after Florida swung to the right in 2020 and 2022 by a couple Hispanic polling companies, and they learned that "immigration" isn't the problem so much as the sense that these new arrivals -- legal and illegal -- are getting handouts or "jumping to the front of the line." Therefore, Democrats should stop assuming Hispanics care about immigration as a general question. They were turning off swing voters apparently.

Now imagine these attitudes AND the racism infecting Haitian immigrants.

the talented mr pimply (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 18 September 2024 15:18 (one month ago) link

Honestly, if the Dems were anything but a bunch of more quietly racist and nationalist losers, they would be pointing out that everyone here is an immigrant, and that demonizing immigrants either legal or illegal is a childish and inarguably racist way of viewing the world. But they won't do that because they're too chickenshit to stand up for what's right.

kamala yesterday was pretty poignant about ohio in that interview. school picture day! that was pretty sad.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 September 2024 15:59 (one month ago) link

not to sound like, uh, the heritage foundation or something but i just don't understand how this country can be so shortsighted when it comes to undocumented immigration. how there is no long-term plan to deal with with the problem after decades of it getting worse and worse. and with future climate displacement it is truly going to be much much worse. when you see the amount of people coming from Asia alone. its a lot of people! which is why Trump is going to die on his racist/xenophobic hill. i think that's what he has decided. its his last chance to win. i doubt he'll really bring up anything else until the election. its going to be fear 24/7. he must know that it's his only shot.

scott seward, Wednesday, 18 September 2024 16:16 (one month ago) link

Well, the bleak view would be that they’re well aware of how much worse things will get with climate displacement, and the overall right turn reflects the assumption that we will not be able to deal with it and need to prepare for ever harsher measures to keep the desperate masses out.

i mean the "funny" thing is despite all the years of xenophobic grandstanding america still does take in a ton of immigrants

Dems, I don’t know who Dena is

O 'Tis Redding (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 18 September 2024 16:45 (one month ago) link

Harris has definitely been both-sidesing the issue, doing some warm-fuzzy we're-all-immigrants talk and some tough crackdown-on-the-border stuff. Which has kind of been the normal Dem playbook for a long time.

I understand how and why scapegoating works, but it is legit crazy to me that so many Americans really do consistently cite this as one of their top concerns. Unlike the economy — which has obvious and real impacts on people's lives — "immigration" feels pretty abstract. I don't think many people could really cite any particular negative impact on their own lives from immigration, documented or undocumented. People are reacting to what they see on TV or hear from political leaders, that there's this "crisis," while at the same time living side by side or at least in the same cities and towns with immigrants who are making up majorities of service workers in a lot of industries (construction and hospitality, to name the most obvious ones). The economic data is unambiguous that the current immigrant population of the country is a net positive. We put a new roof on our house this year, and the entire - entire! — crew that actually did the work was Latino.

It just seems so bizarre for so many people to be convinced that something that is actually good for their quality of life is somehow harmful to it.

intheblanks, Wednesday, 18 September 2024 16:55 (one month ago) link

immigration is something that pokes people in a weird bad spot all over the world and has for a long time, people dont like change they dont like those from outside, america is prob better than most places as far as that stuff goes, just had a conversation with a friend who who was born in armenia moved to russia and then america and he was saying america is so much more welcoming to immigrants than either armenia or russia, which stands to reason since america is as they say a nation of immigrants, especially if you move to a place like nyc where 40% of people were born outside the country

lag∞n, Wednesday, 18 September 2024 16:56 (one month ago) link

places like japan that more or less just dont allow immigration even now that their populations are declining causing lots of undesirable situations, european countries facing population decline are having all sorts of racist/xenophobic reactions to the immigrants theyre letting in to try to combat it
