Arrrrgh I need to move so I can sew without rearranging my whole room temporarily.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Tza, those colors are very you! I think they look good together, too. And that's kind of a nice dress.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmmmm.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:25 (fifteen years ago) link

$325 :(

also where would i wear it?

also does that hem look sewn weird?

tehresa, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:26 (fifteen years ago) link

I can't tell from that photo but satin is REALLY hard to hide anything on because of the sheen. Hem stitches almost always show a TINY bit, even a $325 dress isn't hand-made.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:27 (fifteen years ago) link

i need a job so i can buy clothes

honestly, i'm (ridiculously, and i know it) depressed about my wardrobe (or the lack of it). i threw out most of my clothes before moving here, came with just a suitcase. not that i had much wearable stuff anyway. but i still haven't got work, so gotta be careful with our moneys till then, so no shopping for me :( :( :(

this isn't really anything to do with dresses, i just needed to vent and i thought you ladies would understand my anguish.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Rrubs, I have a friend who probably wears the same skirt or cardigan or something about three days a week, and she feels shabby but she NEVER looks less than slightly frightening, just because her accessories are unique and uniquely combined, and she's got excellent posture and just...personal dignity. Carriage. She's a good reminder to me.

^i recently got the dress in the middle, but in the grey/black color scheme.
i am excited to wear it with colorful tights!

bell_labs, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

also, laurel, you could have been talking about me, until you got to the part about the posture and dignity

bell_labs, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

You should meet her sometime. Maybe we'll have a girls' night.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

By which I mean we'll go somewhere that serves alcohol and allows conversation.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:52 (fifteen years ago) link

I RLY like that dress, bell. I want you to have purple or red tights for it and your Chie shoes!

Laurel, Thursday, 14 August 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

oh wow bell, v v jealous of that dress!

tehresa, Thursday, 14 August 2008 22:39 (fifteen years ago) link

i went vintage shopping and got a dress that's very much like the grey tory burch dress, front pleats and all, except it has 3/4 length sleeves. it was $22. i am the winner!

lauren, Sunday, 17 August 2008 01:56 (fifteen years ago) link

also an a-line red silk minidress with a heavily beaded collar/frontpiece that seems to have been custom made in kowloon city many years ago. swoon.

lauren, Sunday, 17 August 2008 01:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i got two dresses at value village (2nd-hand dept store) in the suburbs today! one is a seersucker h&m halter dress (white & grey v v thin stripes) and the other is a really thin cream & red patterned short sundress which i will say i'm not really going to wear in public unless i'm wearing a bathing suit underneath. so yeah 2 dresses for like $10!

my friend got this kinda crazy yellow sundress with big pink roses on it that is total early-90s awesome. it is the dress of summer happiness.

oh and i also got this cute dark teal corduroy jumper mini-dress thing, possibly much like what bell_labs was talking about on another thread (fall work wear?) but it is way too mini for me and i feel that i've finally reached the age where i srsly can't get away with a freakin corduroy jumper not even with tights or leggings okay, for real now. but i have a younger friend who can yaay!

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 August 2008 01:10 (fifteen years ago) link

i do want a mini dress though, just not a jumper-style one because damn straight my legs are ruling right now and there's not much summer left

rrrobyn, Monday, 18 August 2008 01:14 (fifteen years ago) link

went bridesmaids' dress shopping with some friends last week, want this muchly but it was $200, not the style they picked AND I am not a bridesmaid. Sigh. Anyone know of any online retailers with this style but cheaper?

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:44 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah i like that style too! but in a less 'dressy'/formal fabric perhaps, so it's obv less wedding-like

i am wearing my seersucker dress today :) dresses are fun

rrrobyn, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, this one was very "I am going to a wedding." I just love that pleating technique - anyone know if there is a name for it? I saw a shirt with this style in H&M last year but it was on a mannequin and all attempts to find it on a rack were fruitless (and the H&M employees I have encountered are generally useless, so I didn't ask.) I have been coveting this pleated fabric since!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

v cute!

ffm, i saw this woman yesterday with your color hair and a black dress with this canary yellow cardigan draped on her shoulders and thought of you and that you should rock this look if you are not already!

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:59 (fifteen years ago) link

oh gosh, that does sound cute! I want to own cardigans, but never find/buy cardigans. A few years ago, my Grandma bought me a few yellow shirts because she wanted to see me in more yellow - unfortunately, they were too baggy and shapeless! Fail, Grandma :(

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:02 (fifteen years ago) link

i LOVE cardigans

tehresa, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i finally tried on this black cowlneck dress i've been eyeing at banana republic and it looks great except for the fact that it has the STUPIDEST FUCKING SLEEVES
http://www.bananarepublic.com/Asset_Archive/BRWeb/Assets/Outfit/124/OUT12465/outfit/br-otf-out12465oviv01.jpg

why? they are so fucking dumb and leave an awkward gap between the armpit and sideboob, as illustrated above. i reallllllly want a cowlneck belted dress too :(

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

ok that pic came out too small:
http://www.bananarepublic.com/Asset_Archive/BRWeb/Assets/Outfit/124/OUT12465/outfit/br-otf-out12465odv01.jpg
better illustration of armpit weirdness

from the front it is such a perfect office dress!

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 17:57 (fifteen years ago) link

you know when a sleeve is making a models arms look chunky - AVOID

sunny successor, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:06 (fifteen years ago) link

it made my arms look geriatric. serious ugh

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:07 (fifteen years ago) link

that is weird - because the dress is so cute! :/

rrrobyn, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:20 (fifteen years ago) link

i know! if it goes on sale (which i assume it will because the sleeves are so wacky) i might get it to wear with a jacket over it.

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i also love the purple tights/shoes combo

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:22 (fifteen years ago) link

could you wear it with, like, a tight black t-shirt (long-sleeved or short-sleeved) on underneath or wld that be weird

rrrobyn, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:28 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah that might work! but there's no way i'm buying it on non-sale

bell_labs, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

oh god I've seen that cut before.. I don't understand why they do that!

Finefinemusic, Friday, 22 August 2008 18:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Unfortunate, because I like the look of cap sleeves. But that IS the widest part of the arm.

Laurel, Friday, 22 August 2008 19:14 (fifteen years ago) link

On the other hand, sometimes I think you just gotta suck it up and realize no one is really looking at your upper arms.

My birthday is in a few months and I spent a lot on my boyfriend, so he told me to look for stuff online (shopping is terrible in Toronto except H&M, Gap, etc) and I am obsessed with this site now:

A lot of rockabilly sites online carry clothes from stopstaringclothing.com, so that's a good place to look for the greatest variety.

Other nice 50s links I've found are reddressshoppe.com and www.unique-vintage.com. (The second one isn't actually vintage, it's all modern dresses that could be fit into various decades. Useful, if what you really need is a swing dress in perfect condition in a modern size 10.)

Laurel, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:30 (fifteen years ago) link

Also mybabyjo.com but I think they carry mostly Stop Staring dresses too.

Let me say that I had mixed reviews of my last order from Stop Staring: The dress was strongly constructed but very basic -- no lining, no interfacing, no nice finishing details. It looked like a nicer dress online than it actually was, esp for $120. I returned it.

Laurel, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:32 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh is unique-vintage the one you were telling me about a while ago? i kept meaning to ask you for the name!

tehresa, Saturday, 23 August 2008 22:46 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh thanks for the tips Laurel!

Finefinemusic, Sunday, 24 August 2008 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

from unique-vintage, this is gorgeous:

i think i like them because they allow me to do something when i feel insecure.

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Looks like purple is trend for this season (along with "turtle"")-- I read it in amny.

tehresa, Tuesday, 26 August 2008 02:54 (fifteen years ago) link
