I like this album, especially "Long Way To Go".

The future of Rodney got a -- (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 20 August 2006 01:37 (seventeen years ago) link

she is so fucking hot.

the song is fucking hot.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 20 August 2006 07:55 (seventeen years ago) link

"'long way 2 go' is so good; she's so detached it's virtually spoken word."

its more like prince on irrestible bitch or something.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:29 (seventeen years ago) link

does anyone know who produced her album? they are fucking great.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Ryan Leslie

The future of Rodney got a -- (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 20 August 2006 08:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i love it when they try to get scandalous
even though they know they really can't handle it
(they can't handle it?) they can't handle it
tryna take me out to dinner - i cancel it

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I love that bit!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:44 (seventeen years ago) link

i have to rewind that verse every time i hear it!

i love how she uses exactly the same vocal strategy on 'long way 2 go' as on 'me & u' to completely different effect

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:49 (seventeen years ago) link

OMG mindmeld, I heard that section for the first time and had to rewind it immediately! Handle it = Destinys Child reference, but 'i cancel it' sounds like something from the fannypack album. RoXOr.

alext (alext), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

i really like the line just after it too - "if you wanna get to know me, first of all / you should never try to get too personal", the sudden switch from sassy you're-not-getting-any teasing to this kind of sad-detached emotional barrier she's putting up around herself. and the contradiction of it too - how do you get to know someone without getting personal?

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 21 August 2006 09:59 (seventeen years ago) link

you get your people to call her people....

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:01 (seventeen years ago) link

She's kind of like a courtesan innit.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:06 (seventeen years ago) link

shes an upscale, icily detached yet teasingly available high school escort.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:16 (seventeen years ago) link

she sounds like she doesnt really know what she wants actually in that lyric. typical indecisve teenage tease.

has anyone seen her TRL performance? its pretty bad, although she is actually quite endearing in it. she has a great smile and that strange combination of innocence/adolescent clunkiness/sweetness. she was trying to dance all sexily in the performance, but whether its because the moves just werent too good or that she isnt the best dancer, it just ended up looking funny.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 21 August 2006 10:23 (seventeen years ago) link

today i really really love the break into those dreamy strings at the end of 'long way 2 go'.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 09:27 (seventeen years ago) link

The she says "personal" like "person-all" is grebt too.

Rodn y Greene (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 13:05 (seventeen years ago) link

Eh, 'Me & You' is good enough, a little underwhelming. In a similar vien I prefer Amerie's 'Touch'.

chap who would dare to start Raaatpackin (chap), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't really thing her voice is any thinner than Ciara's. Also, I like her better.

trees (treesessplode), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:22 (seventeen years ago) link

cassie is much much cuter than ciara.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:26 (seventeen years ago) link

The single makes her vocal range seem much more limited than it actually is.

Rodn y Greene (R. J. Greene), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 16:32 (seventeen years ago) link

the album has a harp on it!!!

(it is also v good, if a little more inviting than i was expecting)

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 4 September 2006 06:27 (seventeen years ago) link

a few potentially coherent late-night reflections:

* I love Ciara but Cassie's part-Filipina-ness is almost a trump card
* she hails from the Long Day's Journey Into Night town
* the erotic subtext (supertext just about) vs. detached delivery = cool evocation of post-industrial nightlife meat-market malaise? = half-hearted surrender to/embrace of the meat-market model of urban social interaction OR mere happy-accident tension betw unpolished vox & run-of-the-mill r&b motifs?
* the bittersweet emaciation of Me & U's falling clave blips is almost snap
* Long Way 2 Go has a sorta baroque video-game aesthetic that I can get behind in a big way
* Ryan Leslie's original ideal/masterplan for Cassie: "multi-ethnic, non-genre specific voice" vs. the actual reality of "non-ethnic, multi-genre specific voice"??

HMMMM

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Also I wanna know what Andy Doubtbeat means!

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Monday, 4 September 2006 09:55 (seventeen years ago) link

This might actually be my album of the year. I'm thinking that a better comparison might be "cassie - the new Aalyiah?". She obviously sounds a bit uncertain here and there but Aalyiah had a few years before turning into the icy diva that she'll be remembered as. If Cassie can develop a bit more charisma and effortless class, she might be really great. If not, she'll still have a very sexy debut.

Also I wanna know what Andy Doubtbeat means!

Are you referring to my last post? It was just a silly response to the "But she can't even sing!" nonsense. (Plus, it's probably the truth as well.) I could've also posted "I might like Shellac if Steve Albini could belt like Paul Rodgers."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

the album has like 2 or 3 other good songs on it. that last le tigre track? wtf

jaxon (jaxon), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Aaliyah is definitely the album this reminds me of most. It's definitely got that same sort of sheeny future-soul vibe.

Post-Rodney (But no one called it that at the time) (R. J. Greene), Tuesday, 5 September 2006 18:59 (seventeen years ago) link

did anyone else hear the teairra marĂ album last year? that's still the closest comparison, for me, though i see how cassie's similar to aaliyah too. ciara is a bit of a red herring.

i really love the whole album.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 09:03 (seventeen years ago) link

The seriously seriously underestimated Teairra album was one of my favorites last year -- the back half is nearly flawless, but there were no singles from it. Cassie's singles are stronger, though her nonsingles are considerably weaker.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 10:45 (seventeen years ago) link

cassie's nonsingles were a bit of a curveball for me - i'm not convinced they're weaker, though, so much as they undercut the persona which cassie's built up in the singles - glacial, emotionally reticent, unwilling to give too much of herself away - and reveal that underneath she's actually warm and inviting. whereas the teairra nonsingles totally reinforced the glacial hard bitch persona she'd cultivated on the singles, removing the odd conflict between the two personae which i find on the cassie album.

NATASHA: THE NEW CASSIE?

i love love love 'hey hey hey' and 'so sick'...

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:39 (seventeen years ago) link

link?

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I love "Hey Hey Hey", but I find the vocals in "So Sick" really annoying.

Cassie's got a new album coming out this year, that should be great.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:49 (seventeen years ago) link

i need to download this album. i love me & u, but i feel kinda like a perv listening to it so i usually go with the remix w/diddy. bad boys the empire!

artdamages, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

the vocals in 'so sick' are ridiculous...she sings ONE really really high-pitched note for the entirety of the verse, and the chorus is that half-rapped half-sung thing, and the beat of course is barely there, but it totally worms its way into your head, and each tiny tiny detail is totally magnified. her arrogance is v fun and endearing, too.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:53 (seventeen years ago) link

wait how old is cassie?

artdamages, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:54 (seventeen years ago) link

cassie is 20
according to her song natasha is 17

lex pretend, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 14:57 (seventeen years ago) link

woow - 'So Sick' is pretty audacious. I don't know yet if it's the most irritating thing I've heard, but kudos for trying

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 15:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Natasha's voice makes me want to take a hacksaw to my ears.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 28 February 2007 20:21 (seventeen years ago) link

you all say this, now. you will be singing it yourself soon.

lex pretend, Thursday, 1 March 2007 09:14 (seventeen years ago) link

pharrel should hire chomsky or robert van winkle, or maybe slip hammer some ketamine or something, to shoot 'clipse' in his arm & i pray natasha cuts uffie's throat 'from ear to ear,' the only time she could genuinely smile being engaged with such a failure of a producer-- i just hope she finds me first!!

luriqua, Thursday, 1 March 2007 09:23 (seventeen years ago) link

two months pass...

Just discovering her album. It's tremendous! I prefer it to the new Amerie and Rihanna.

Long Way 2 Go hooked me in (funny MySpace-themed video!) and it's the delightful pop of Ditto and smouldering of Kiss Me that I'm currently stuck on.

Alba, Monday, 28 May 2007 13:27 (sixteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Rumor has it she got dropped from Bad Boy.

This makes me a sad panda.

The Brainwasher, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Siik (the dude who made that jazzy remix of Amerie's "1 Thing" a couple years back also remixed "Me & U" and again, it sounds like a completely different song. It's great.

Wookie Rookie, Sunday, 17 June 2007 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah the siik remix is pretty awesome

i guess the album didnt sell v. well? cuz it pretty much ruled from end to end (a lot of this was leslies production, anyone know anything else of note hes done?)

nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

cassie :(

the other two noteworthy ryan leslie productions i've heard - both v much in the same gently minimalist vein - are the new megan rochell single, 'my mistake', and 'like that', off the jojo album. both v well worth hearing.

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:21 (sixteen years ago) link

is the whole jojo album worth checking out? i hadnt seen the list of producers till just now, a veritable whos who of hiphop-pop crossover appeal

nervous, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

it is, mostly - it's not exactly consistent but she does a v good beyonce impression on the swizz beats track, the storch one is surprisingly r leslie-esque (thought that was his one for ages), there's a really nice digitised country thing...

lex pretend, Sunday, 17 June 2007 21:34 (sixteen years ago) link

oh yeah i didn't realise this before i heard the new album but jojo can really sing
