SE PA update: still no Trump flags, but I've now seen a couple of pickups with big American flags mounted on the back, so I assume they are in the zone.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 28 March 2024 18:30 (one month ago) link
Don't worry, in 2020 they had roadside stands in SE PA where you could buy Trump flags for your big ass truck.
― President Keyes, Thursday, 28 March 2024 18:33 (one month ago) link
Like when the Eagles are in the Superbowl
I don't think David Lynch has ever openly supported Trump but he did say something like "Why not just give him a chance? See what he can do." (This when Trump was president.) Which he walked back pretty quickly, as I recall.

The guy probably just heard the word "lynch."

I've said this before but I had never seen more Confederate flags in my life in one place than in rural Southwestern Pennsylvania in 2016 or so, more than even in the parts of the South I've traveled (never been to Mississippi or Alabama). And waaaaay more than I've ever seen in Maryland.

I've mentioned in the past that the small town where my mom lives in rural Illinois (1,700 population) has a Trump Store that sells (as far as I can tell from the road, fuck if I'll investigate more closely) flags and stickers and such, in a small strip on the main drag. Whenever I visit I always hope to see it vacant again, but sadly this weekend I saw that it has doubled in size, now taking over an additional storefront. The economy must be booming if there is that much money flowing for Trump merch!

that's the thing that the cultists can't understand... we just don't care about Joe Biden that much, but we're still gonna vote for him (at least most of us will)... we won't buy a flag or a bible or wear a kooky Biden hat, he's not that kind of figure. He's just a politician that takes up very little space in my head for the most part

that was bidens promise, which is a typically paltry stupid dem fantasy, but at this point a good chunk his potential constituency actively dislike him, with many feeling much more negative

someone in my neighborhood has the Trump-as-Rambo flag and all I can think every time I see it is if I saw someone do that with Joe Biden that person is either hilarious or needs to be committed
― frogbs, Thursday, 28 March 2024 19:29 (one month ago) link
dems should get someone that will inspire that sort of psychosis tho

who knows what the real dynamics are but if she was currently in a primary v biden talking about cutting israel off people would be going wild it would be some shit, part of what made trump work was breaking republican taboos and just not being a typical on message politician, idk if theres something out there like that for dems but its interesting to ponder

the problem is Dems actually care about results and passing bills and stuff with the GOP it's just all vibes which is a lot easier to control
― frogbs, Thursday, 28 March 2024 19:47 (one month ago) link
i would argue that the dem party vibe is passing bills and stuff, do they actually pass bills and stuff no of course not, its a shitty vibe technocrats neoliberalism the managerial class etc, from a political perspective its what you could call loser stuff, a party designed to lose, which is what makes it vulnerable to someone who not totally motivated by sitting on corporate boards in retirement

I think the only equivalent is the Dark Biden meme or whatever it is

I think Obama was seen as pretty cool until he started trying to work with the Republicans and kept getting his ass handed to him. Oh, and droning people.
― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 28 March 2024 20:11 (one month ago) link
obama ran on hope and change then didnt hope or change anything, he was obvs just a very good electoral politician, but that trick only works once, he had something going but then totally shut it down cause at heart he was another centrist dem with "self" defeating ideas about governing
― lag∞n, Thursday, 28 March 2024 20:16 (one month ago) link

He was in the House of Representatives for almost 20 years and the Senate for a decade before he ran for president the first time.

a big dem impediment to having a good candidate from a voter pov, obvs nothing compared to corporate influence etc haha, is too many dems have expert syndrome they cant just like something they try to nate silver it, absolutely no theory of change just a bunch of cheap heuristics and historical anecdotes they think are universal laws, conclusions worse than if they were just folks
also their messaging sucks
― a (waterface), Thursday, 28 March 2024 20:31 (one month ago) link
imo thats more a result of the things they want sucking than being bad at messaging particularly

yah for sure. "compromise" instead of, you know, "crazy stuff" (a 32 hour work week is not that crazy. but this will go nowhere.)

Oh absolutely that bill will go nowhere, but otoh, things like that are what plant the seed for eventual change so... I'm not mad at it, even knowing it's just a symbolic thing at this particular point in history.

the example I keep bringing up is how everyone thought "build a wall" was the dumbest shit regardless of political affiliation but once Trump started winning primaries suddenly it became popular on the right. imagine that with an idea that's actually good and can be accomplished
