wait i've got a contro/op! THE ONLY 21ST CENTURY INDIE GUITAR BANDS WORTH LISTENING TO ARE ALL FROM AUSTRALIA. its true. dune rats. rolling blackouts. violent soho. hockey dad. drunk mums. total control. the uv race. raw balls. dick diver. lace curtain. rat columns. dag. blank realm. NEED I GO ON??? not to mention famous people like courtney and amyl.

pretty much the only modern indie rock i listen to. everything else is lame. how do they all make their guitars sound so cool and fun? and why does it look like they are having so much fun? aren't all the koalas on fire over there? down there. so infectious. AND NOT JUST THAT SMOKO SONG. they can't ALL be related to the Go-Betweens.

i'm a little behind though. i need to find some new kangarockers.

(i'm listening to the song "dive deep" by rolling blackouts right now and i think could marry the entire band. so good.)

"children of dentists selling meth to buy coke?" Anyway, joke or no: dentists, Phish, nitrous, it all adds up.

― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, February 28, 2024 5:47 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

Actual LOLs because the biggest Phish phan I knew at aforementioned college was the son of a dentist studying to be a dentist who also happens to be the only person I've ever done whipits with so that tracks.

most of these are more punk than indie but some more Aussie recs: Ausmuteants, Alien Nosejob, Civic, Soakie, Private Function, Cold Meat, Ubik, Enzyme, Straightjacket Nation

I mean, yes and no. Similar in that they have a massive dedicated live following and really bring out folks with the collector's bug. But also, no, they don't ever really sound like Phish and are all over the place from stoner rock to thrash to kraut to prog and all points in between.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:03 (two months ago) link

i haven't done a deep dive but i don't really like how their records sound, recording wise

Sony's Sports Walkman Universe (morrisp), Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:30 (two months ago) link

my kid loves big thief. my kid turns me on to cool stuff. i like Wednesday! and my kid rufus turned me on to the wednesday guitarist's stuff and i dug it. it almost sounded australian!

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:33 (two months ago) link

i like turnstile lollllzzz but i kinda do. don't know why really.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:34 (two months ago) link

i like western mass indie rock. my friends. its chill. my pal mikey turner had an awesome band called Huevos II but he moved to england :(

and my friend adam had an awesome band that i loved called New Parents but he moved to Philly and now he plays with kurt vile :(

and my pals clarke and wednesday (no relation to the band) had an AWES0ME band called Pigeons but they don't play anymore :(

but my friends patrick and wes have a new band that is awesome called Creative Writing. look out for them.

and my friends rob and bev have an amazing folk/psych band called Stella Kola and their album is one of my faves of recent times. that's online.

but maybe i like them so much because they are my friends. New Parents were SO great live.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:39 (two months ago) link

hahaha, no way, my kid - whose band is awesome by the way and if you are ever in montreal check them out *Rufus Cesspool* - just sent me this insta message!!

Scott here's a good Aussie band for you to check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mjz2DaiMzOU

its nice that other than one vote for canada nobody disagrees with me about australia. it must be true! there's something in the water. i listened to so much of that stuff during the pandemic. shit, that reminds me of a thread i wanted to start.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 17:51 (two months ago) link

I mean I disagree that the only current guitar bands worth listening to are from there, but it sounds like you're just hyperbolizing :)

Backtracking to the discussion of arty, improv-y metal, Stereogum's metal column this month has an interview with Álvaro Domene, a guitarist who's at the forefront of that "movement" (he's on the Catatonic Effigy album I linked, and has his own label, Iluso).

Tahuti Watches L&O:SVU Reruns Without His Ape (unperson), Thursday, 29 February 2024 18:33 (two months ago) link

i will check that out.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 18:35 (two months ago) link

There's an amazing quote in the middle of the interview that sums up so much of what I love about wild heavy shit:

While Domene may not consider himself a metalhead, he’s still cultivated an intriguing take on the style’s importance in his playing. “There are certain aspects of performing ultra-intense, loud, and highly technical music that I think is likely only achievable, as an instrumentalist, if you spend time working in metal music that features those elements,” he writes. “Incidentally, I think that’s why most ‘jazz rock’ or ‘jazz metal’ groups out there sound like cheesy ’80s fusion to me because the performers tend to be jazz musicians who are attempting to play loud and tricky material, but they, in my opinion, and for the most part, are not even remotely aware of the macro and micro strategies inherently applied in great metal and which make that music blast you in the face and punch your heart in total catharsis, like the many nuances that the picking hand of a competent metal guitarist has, for example, which can turn a flat riff into a chainsaw or freight train. All this to say that metal and punk, not as styles per se but more so as an ethos, are part of my vocabulary, so when the music requires a certain level of intensity and sonic insurrection, that part of me is pleased to come out and burn it all down. I just never think of it as, ‘Oh well, time to play some metal riffs now.’ I actually never think of this. It’s well ingrained.”

― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, February 29, 2024 11:09 AM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink

yea most of their early records are intentionally lo-fi - easier to get into them when you realize that's how they're *supposed* to sound. but I think Nonagon Infinity was the last record they did like that and the ones I have beyond that sound pretty good

frogbs, Thursday, 29 February 2024 18:42 (two months ago) link

There are def. some King Gizzard tracks (albums?) that sound broadly Phishy, but there are also microtonal experimental records, garage rock records, legit thrash records, and so on.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 29 February 2024 18:49 (two months ago) link

thanks for the Lewers tip! digging them. would definitely buy that album if i saw it.

scott seward, Thursday, 29 February 2024 19:03 (two months ago) link

digging the Exek record! its like a lost Section 25 album. cheers, nerve pylon.

scott seward, Friday, 1 March 2024 16:22 (two months ago) link

Here'a controversial musical opinion, so controversial I'm surprising myself: I think I'd much rather hear an album of the Rolling Stones covering the VU than the Feelies one.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 1 March 2024 16:26 (two months ago) link

what the heck would that even sound like???

scott seward, Friday, 1 March 2024 16:30 (two months ago) link

I’d rather sit home and listen to Murmur than see a cover band play it live… even a talented cover band with the R.E.M. guys’ endorsement……
