Oh shit! June!

YES

woof, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:03 (two months ago) link

687k by the end! Fun seeing all the "Praise The Sun" and "Umbasa" and "finger but hole" in the chat. New environments and weapons look amazing. Kinda wished Miquella wasn't destined to be "another boss" and had a more complicated relationship w Mr. Tarnished but there it is

In From games, *you* are always ultimately the boss.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:12 (two months ago) link

Ooooh, (Elden Ring) finally! I like June for this, that fits into my 2024 schedule. :)

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:29 (two months ago) link

They sure showed a lot of bosses in that trailer.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:30 (two months ago) link

Yeah, it kinda makes me wonder if this DLC is gonna be a boss rush. I wouldn't be super into that, but who knows. It looks pretty expansive.

I am particularly excited to unleash some Street Fighter-ass flying kicks in a From game.

ELDEN RING!

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:47 (two months ago) link

I bet it's going to be massive. Souls games had pretty sizeable dlc areas (I forgot that DS2 had *3* separate dlcs with 9 bosses total, DS3 was split into 2 with 6 bosses total, etc) and I imagine this will be comparable, if not much bigger since that seems to be the ER house style.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:47 (two months ago) link

surprised they've not gone down the "cosy farming sim" route, but apart from that it looks great!

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 15:58 (two months ago) link

This is the first From DLC I'll be getting in real time. In the past, have the DLCs been hidden? That is, do you have to explore to find them? They seem like they'd be that way, based on where they've been in past games, and its very nature makes "Elden Ring" even more primed for discovery.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 16:22 (two months ago) link

Also, I just realized this is $40 and apparently even has a collector's edition. Does not sound like mere DLC.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 16:31 (two months ago) link

Oh, and it's 60gb, too, which is the size of the base game. That's crazy.

absolutely stoked.

Yes, in my limited experience, which is DS1's DLC, which I needed a guide to find. The trailer here seems to indicate that the entry to the DLC is via Miquella's egg in the Moghwyn Palace.

feed me with your chips (zchyrs), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 16:57 (two months ago) link

lol, affirming my worst fears, "Miquella's egg in the Moghwyn Palace" doesn't ring any bells for me.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:06 (two months ago) link

That's Moghwyn's Palace in shot at the v beginning of the trailer, and suggests also that the opening spec for the DLC will be quite high? Mog's Palace is a pita.

Fizzles, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:13 (two months ago) link

Is it in the boss room? Definitely a check on your level/skill/ability to summon friends and hide in a corner.

Finding the entrance to the dlc is always a fun little community game...Dark Souls 1 was very obscure, Bloodborne too (you had to get grabbed by the right invisible Lovecraftian monster iirc), but DS3 was pretty straight-forward (talk to the new npc in a low-level area, and warp from the final boss area respectively?).

I bet that if I put my summon sign down tonight there will be a lot of people trying to beat ol' Mohg.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:22 (two months ago) link

I have no idea how anyone found the DS1 DLC without a guide

Where are people seeing that his name is Messmer the Impaler?

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:39 (two months ago) link

Well, even so there's an Impaler's Catacombs on the Weeping Peninsula, so that's interesting

Not sure - might be the comparatively early colonnaded temple bit with a mob protecting it, which wd be easier.

also, this!

Fizzles, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:47 (two months ago) link

and i take it the full crucible knight move set wasn’t available before? you cd get the tail but don’t recall the winged attack?

Fizzles, Wednesday, 21 February 2024 17:48 (two months ago) link

Ya that's new for sure.

I had to confirm, but you can get to Moghwyn Palace very early using the medal you get from Varre's quest (which I just did on my new character). So that makes even more sense as a dlc entrance, for masochists who want to do it at low levels (although I'm sure people will be doing this as a way to rush and get crazy dlc weapons on their early game builds).

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 18:01 (two months ago) link

I have no idea how anyone found the DS1 DLC without a guide

I have no idea how anyone figured out how to upgrade weapons properly in DS1 without a guide tbh

a hyperlink to the past (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 18:09 (two months ago) link

lol, fr. I remember how absolutely obsessed I was by the oblique mysteries of DS1, poring over the wikidot and watching videos on the mechanics & secrets. And that's before getting intrigued by the pvp scene on youtube (though I didn't participate in that until the remaster, after DS3 finally hooked me on invasions).

tldr: it's a new area + new map, larger than Limgrave, they're experimenting with combining the open world and legacy dungeon area types, 10+ bosses/largest dlc ever, 8 new weapon *categories* (!)

a hyperlink to the past (flamboyant goon tie included), Wednesday, 21 February 2024 21:23 (two months ago) link

Dumb question, but with a DLC like this, does it slot into the base game and you play it like another area/level? Do you have to start again? Need you have FINISHED (I still havent lol lol )

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 22 February 2024 01:04 (two months ago) link

Couldn’t say for sure. Previous DLCs needed to be played through before completing the main game. You would typically gain access at a certain point (60% of the way through, 95% of the way through). The difficulty generally has been end-game and harder. Manus harder than Gwyn, Kos harder than [spoiler]. End of DLC bosses in DS3 were insanely hard

If you haven’t played From DLC before, Trayce, there’s a reason everyone is shitting themselves… the DLC of previous Souls games has been, like, impossibly better than the already spectacular main game.

Oh kerrrist, I havent been able to get any further than Farum Azula as it is :(

"It was only after creating it that I realised I really like to create poisoned swamps… So maybe, when players reach the poisoned swamp in the DLC, they will feel a little bit of this retrospection"

Yup, as we all suspected.

octobeard, Thursday, 22 February 2024 02:22 (two months ago) link

Farum Azula is end game and is the hardest area! (Aside from the Haligtree)

Idk, I’m so excited. The thrill of running through Dreg Heap into The Ringed City for the first time is one of the most incredible gaming experiences of my life. I hope to hit that high again

a hyperlink to the past (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 22 February 2024 04:17 (two months ago) link

lol i will certainly feel some retrospection when i get to the swamp xpost

I'm with you fgti (and probably most here) - ridiculously excited but also worried about losing my whole summer

Without exaggeration, Elden Ring is a marvel and a miracle to me. Like, it's a wonder it exists

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Thursday, 22 February 2024 08:50 (two months ago) link

xxxp damnit you're making me want to play DS3 now

octobeard, Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:02 (two months ago) link

Quick derail, but what are peeps' thoughts on DS3? I've heard wildly mixed reviews.

I have been playing Dark Souls 1 on and off for almost two years (I know!) and then out it down just at the end because I got stuck on Kalameet. Keep meaning to finish it, either by trying really hard with that dragon or just sacking him off to kill Gwyn.

Should I played DS2 first (it seems sprawling and very difficult, plus it looks and plays a bit jankily by todays standards)?

Fwiw I have started DS3 and have got as far as a boss in the first world proper. It has a slightly different tone to DS1

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:19 (two months ago) link

realising, only now, that I never played through the DS3 DLC properly. Another one to add to the list!

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:24 (two months ago) link

DS3 is fantastic IMO, right up there with the best From games

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Thursday, 22 February 2024 09:24 (two months ago) link

DS3 one of the very best - perhaps lacks the sheer brilliance of the map design in DS1, but more than makes up for it by incorporating the livelier play built into Bloodborne into the weapons-and-shields DS formula.

I haven’t played more than five hours of DS2. Aesthetically it seemed so wrong, immediately; throwing the talking bird right at the very beginning of the game (in an instructional area?), to me it felt and played like the mashup of Soulsborne and Banjo-Kazooie that nobody asked for

It’s hard for me to pick DS3 and say “it’s the best in the series” when I’ve definitely sunk more hours into Bloodborne and Elden Ring— the former for gem hunting, the latter for PvP.

But DS3 is probably the most memorable, for me, just mentally running through the areas and bosses feels like I’m remembering the most beautiful vacation of my life.

And ya DL I share your enthusiasm, I recall playing Elden Ring and feeling like I was living through a Renaissance

a hyperlink to the past (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 22 February 2024 12:55 (two months ago) link

I loved DS3, I want to say it has some of the best design apart from Bloodborne. Ringed City's design rules, that's for sure. At the same time, checking back, it might be the only of the three Souls games where I got frustrated and didn't bother with a couple of bosses, albeit I think maybe just in the DLC. The flipside of that may be DS2, whose base game had a bunch of stuff I didn't particularly like, but whose DLC was iirc pretty good. All the games are pretty great, though, even the ones I liked less. Sekiro might have the most stuff I just never got around to, but that may be because getting to the proper end game required a bunch of particularly byzantine and esoteric stuff I just didn't have the time for, and the bosses are all hard as hell.

Which game has the shark trolls?
