the best lyrics are ones that, in a certain mood and from a certain angle, will seem bad. you have to risk embarrassment to write poetry. this doesn't mean bad poetry is good. it does not mean that. it just means that good poetry will always seem bad to some people all the time, and all people some of the time.

i personally would draw a large distinction between the ideas of "good lyrics" and "good lyrics for a T Rex song"

"Cosmic Dancer" is probably not the former but definitely the latter

You probably hate “Chariots of Silk,” don’t you?

fucking loathe jane's addiction and every single thing they ever did

*especially* 'jane says'

'perry farrell' is a pretty good stage name tho

wait what is the pun with Perry Farrell?

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 5 February 2024 05:22 (two months ago) link

...it's a terrible pun, you can only see it out the side of your vision...

m0stly clean (Slowsquatch), Monday, 5 February 2024 05:24 (two months ago) link

xpost I like that, I like T Rex in general, I just think most things about T Rex have a certain magic that that makes them feel like T Rex and not necessarily something that would work outside of that context, it's not a diss

haha oh God thanks slowsquatch

"build me up buttercup" sucks. "apples, peaches, pumpkin pie" also sucks. also "drift away" by dobie gray. also, stupid david essex and his stupid "rock on". i wish i could officially retire them from every oldies roster on AM and FM radio. some of those chestnuts gotta go. its enough already.

scott seward, Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:18 (two months ago) link

“build me up buttercup” is awful, the music makes me think of xenobites in hellraiser who can’t distinguish between pleasure and pain

brimstead, Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:29 (two months ago) link

worst of all

Evan, Thursday, 8 February 2024 17:53 (two months ago) link

omar little, Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:13 (two months ago) link

"Drift Away" sucks.

poppers fueled buttsex crescendo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:18 (two months ago) link

used to hate it due to some terrible omnipresent cover that leaked all over Bay Area radio in the 90s, became more fond when I heard the Stonea cover.

brimstead, Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:22 (two months ago) link

Stones

brimstead, Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:22 (two months ago) link

for me a road trip to hell would feature a soundtrack of life is a highway, fly away, and drift away.

omar little, Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:22 (two months ago) link

the best thing about "don't pull your love" is the b-side on the 45!

Bill Withers's "daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" over and over always annoyed the hell out of me

Evan, Thursday, 8 February 2024 18:54 (two months ago) link

Despite having a few great songs, Here Comes The Warm Jets (album) is pretty skip-friendly, the weakest of the 1970s "vocal" albums.

It's my least favorite too (the others are A or A+'s).

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Thursday, 8 February 2024 21:02 (two months ago) link

lol i googled 'drift away' and it looks like my most hated artist of all time uncle kracker covered it

ꙮ (map), Friday, 9 February 2024 00:23 (two months ago) link

I'm sure that's where I first heard it and then never stopped hearing it for years, everywhere

omar little, Friday, 9 February 2024 00:31 (two months ago) link

problem I have with “drift away” is that it reminds of the “play some funky Dixieland” part of that doobie brothers song “black water”

brimstead, Friday, 9 February 2024 00:49 (two months ago) link

ugh that is so much worse

I was in the dentist chair for three hours this morning and halfway through “Drift Away” played and I thought “this is the blandest rock standard ever.” I’ve heard it my entire life and never wondered who sang it, even though I can sing along to the whole thing.

Phil Collins twice, Fleetwood Mac twice, the Cars, Pat Benetar also twice. “Stayin Alive” sounded good until the dentist followed the falsetto for a bar or two.

bendy, Friday, 9 February 2024 01:07 (two months ago) link

i hear Black Water and wonder how it mighta been improved if McDonald was in the band then and sang it
