this is one of my most "i should love this but i just can't seem to" bands of all-time
Same! I wish I liked anything else by them as much as "The One"

Opening track on the new album is so lovely. Like pretty much everyone here I was highly suspicious of these guys but stevie's entusiasm for them has got me thinking

Great live vocals on that clip.
They remind me of Emitt Rhodes - they sound amazing! But the songwriting isn't quite there for me.
New album could be a grower through

I'm really getting into their album from last year. Like Stevie, their image was kind of a turn-off for me too but the songs are there. I must go back to their earlier stuff again. They are retro but not slavishly so imo.

I've subsequently fallen really hard for their earlier stuff, too. Esp their musical, Go To School, about a family that adopts a chimp and send it to school, where it is bullied, and rebels by burning down the school. In terms of storytelling and witty character-driven lyricism it's up there with Tim Minchin's Matilda, and my family are so sick of it and have already banned me from quoting the lines "Good morning, it's breakfast / I know how you like your bananas".

They do a fantastic job of playing with humour and also writing songs that are earnest, heartfelt and incredibly emotional, sometimes in the same track. I challenge anyone to listen to New Again, their song about someone with dementia telling their partner that if they cease recognising them, they will simply fall in love with them all over again, and not find a lump in their throat.
