If you haven't switched to Firefox yet, then the Fix AMG extension should be all the reason you need.

I've written an extension for Mozilla Firefox that, when installed, alters the display and functionality of allmusic.com. Specifically, it does the following:

It cleans up the horrible JavaScript-only links sitewide, thus enabling 21st-century browsing techniques such as tabbed browsing and opening links in new windows.

It hides the annoying Flash spinner thing atop each page.

It changes the functionality of the "Read more..." links on band and album detail pages. On the old AMG, band and album pages contained full reviews. Now, they feature only the first few sentences, with a link to "Read more..." on a separate page. The extension changes the functionality of that "Read more..." link so that, instead of taking you to a new page, clicking the link will dynamically load the full band/album review and insert it inline.

But hey Elvis, somebody on the other thread offered an even MORE user friendly solution, for those of us who speak English and stuff!!!!

>Yeah, get the ten CD install of Free Bltfzpk 5.4x. Don't forget the Excrement 01.1 action web accelerator add-ons, people. And you'll need the CrummyFree compiler, although that usually comes with Bltfzpk. Support is excellent.<

someone _will_ write a work-around or maybe the old guide will come out on bootleg CDs -- an client emulating program is needed -- you could run your AMG clicks one by one, wait ten minutes which will give you your buffer/ time lag, and they'll have all been collected for you -- just find something else to do for ten minutes while the computer filters

as for AMG, a conserted effort by all the PCs in China to simultaneously hit on Britney Spears might Mariah-Carey-ify her (eg schoolgirl with mouse ears fried in electrically-lit Xmas-holly romp), duet with Lemmy in an electric chair,.. and maybe creat a ripple in AMG central, whomever that is.

How do any of those things have to do AT ALL with how GOOD the site is? And in what kind of numbskull's imagination do those adjectives even MEAN anything?

Well color me a numbskull. It's marketing, is all. Colors. Shades. The emotional appeal of design. Trends and fashions. Frivolous? Yeah, certainly in this case, as it the redesign interferes with the usability of the site. But trendy colors and updated-looking graphics sell adspace. It's not a stupid idea, not if you want to make some scratch off your work.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 21:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Kinda hard to believe AMG would scrap a simple design that worked for something straight out of the 1999 IPO salad days fuck-up handbook.

i hadn't read the previous few posts, but it didn't take me a second to guess who this came from.

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 22:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Okay, having missed most of the 'excitement' and all that -- I just was looking up the Stina Nordenstam entry right now and the speed was the best I'd seen yet with the new site, got to the entry and album reviews with no trouble. Haven't had any real problems with it over the last couple of days.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I got as far as YOU MUST REGISTER and lost interest.

Ooooh Heaven is a Place on Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:54 (nineteen years ago) link

i still have some problems with it. sometimes i click on a link and...nothing happens.

the "read more" thing is a big annoyance that, i imagine, could be easily fixed. perhaps his nedness can convey these constructive criticisms to those in power?

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:58 (nineteen years ago) link

it's definitely heaps quicker now than it was when they first changed it. you do still have to go through more menus than before to find some stuff that was all on the one page.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 04:59 (nineteen years ago) link

Look I don't know about anyone else but my computer here at home is incapable of getting past the first page. I type in a name and hit "search" and an IE error pops up and won't let me go beyond that point. I get as far as the homepage on my computer and that's it.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 05:18 (nineteen years ago) link

haha i don't use it at home either, i only have dial up and it won't even load the first page never mind anything else. god bless work and its lovely broadband access

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 05:20 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, seems like my modem times-out on this site. This is beyond ridiculous. I can't remember many sites timing out on me even here in NZ. This is the slowest site in years.
I guess all that extra content overloads their servers, so maybe i was just excluded automatically for having the wrong bandwidth or for having the wrong stuff in my cookie.

george gosset (gegoss), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 08:17 (nineteen years ago) link

perhaps his nedness can convey these constructive criticisms to those in power?

They could be conveyed, but I have no guarantee they'll be acted upon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 11:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Did you see my ILM post about the new Stina Nordenstam album in October, Ned? It is going to be excellent from the songs I've heard....

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:08 (nineteen years ago) link

I can live with that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:12 (nineteen years ago) link

The album cover is her most "goth" one yet

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Jesus H. the only way that could be is if she's swathed in a black shroud in the middle of a cemetery.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:49 (nineteen years ago) link

You aren't far off. Just don't forget the long black boots and clenched fists.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm getting used to it in the sense of finding specific info I need, but I've lost all urge to idly peruse the site anymore.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:31 (nineteen years ago) link

Just checked out the "Writers' Bloc" setion on AMG - good to know Stephen Thomas Erlewine still defending the mighty "Nuisance" by Menswe@r

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:08 (nineteen years ago) link

He's not alone, dammit!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks to Chris for the "fix AMG extension" for Firefox...I can now access the site again. Beforehand, any of the dynamic content-type links were just plain busted in ANY of the browsers I was trying to use...IE, Netscape, Firefox, all a no-go. Now I can click em. Yay!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Ooops, wait, the search function still doesn't do anything. Oh well. Bah to this.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

You aren't far off.

JESUS H! And I was just randomly guessing!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh well. Bah to this.

You have the special 'anti-Canadian' AMG virus.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:40 (nineteen years ago) link

jeez, anti-Canadian ? very nice that they have an NZ rock category (wow, like krautrock !), but i just wish i could view it !!

I still can't get the links to respond -- i click and, nothing (x10).. grr..

i changed my setting as per the instructions -- AMG is now my very first "trusted site" even , which seems like a somewhat mighty concession in itself, but still no "search" or "go" buttons seem to do anything -- my firewall blocks pop-ups, so is that the problem ? i hit a button and no bytes even get sent. It just really doesn't like me.

is there something really simple i should know ? is this in permanent revolution mode still ?
it feels like i have to do something like put in "a quarter" or some such thing to get the ball rolling .. am i just not on their demograph radar ? have my callous comments regarding the new site up-thread resulted in designers setting me up my very own "front door" ? essentially, wtf ??

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 31 July 2004 18:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I love how they have entries for allmusic writers now, complete w/'similar artists' and 'influences/followers'

artdamages (artdamages), Saturday, 31 July 2004 19:10 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm just going to have to do some reviews for AMG -- y'know, records no-one has heard of or know exist deserving of 3-5 stars -- typically cut-outs of no commercial value to any "partners" involved with the AMG site that have been dumped in new zealand -- and then i could have a "3rd party content" link to subsequent ebay auctions

feasible ?
they'll have me if you put in a good word won't they Ned ?

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 31 July 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...
YAY! The site mostly doesn't use javascript extensions anymore! I can open links in new windows and be a music flaneur again!!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 23:05 (nineteen years ago) link

So far, if I go to Google's Advanced Search and put allmusic in Domain Name, it takes me to what I'm seeking. But I can't travel via the links I see. Better to go Search allmusic via bn.com But am I getting all the Premium Content??

Don, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 23:30 (nineteen years ago) link

I just got the AMG newsletter where they said things were fixed up now, and they ARE! It works again on my machine! Yay!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 00:56 (nineteen years ago) link

AMG newsletter? Nobody tells me anything and I'm all over the damned site.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 00:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey Ned, where's your AMG bio?

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:16 (nineteen years ago) link

my top beef with AMG remains the 'fudge it' ratings on items that clearly no reviewer's heard/rated yet - a default two, 2 & a half or three stars. why not just leave em unrated until? (zero/blank stars if there's no way to mark unrated in the stars space?)

also, when an album's got a glowing write-up (with a few song mentions) but is missing tracklisting...
maybe they've sorted that now though?

Paul (scifisoul), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 01:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I like how when I click on Heather Phares it lists Stephen Thomas Erlewine and Rob Theakston as similar artists.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Hey Ned, where's your AMG bio?

Am I even supposed to have one?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 12:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Obviously they didn't care enough to send you THAT memo either. They're just using you, man. USING YOU!!!

(Seriously, I was asked to send a bio when I first signed up; maybe that was something the started asking after you were already onboard?)

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Hm, when did you start again?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:23 (nineteen years ago) link

mid-99 I think

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Weird. I think I formally got things into gear around then too.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 13:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Uh oh. Time to sic your squirrels on 'em, Ned!

Are they forcing me into becoming a registered member now?

the todster (the todster), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 12:18 (nineteen years ago) link

can't confirm, haven't been able to use it since the redesign (XP, FF, Dial-up).

Occasionally visit to see if things have improved (no) AMG may as well not exist for me anymore.

i used to use AMG, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I used to use Allmusic all the time, but I avoid it like the plague since they did the reformat. It is so fucking slow and the interface so crap, that it is worthless. If I am curious about a record, it is faster just to go to Amazon or search the rest of the net.

earlnash, Wednesday, 23 March 2005 14:39 (nineteen years ago) link

I've gotten that message, too, but still haven't bothered to sign up.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:00 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah but I got the message every time I tried to do a search. Checked back just now though, and it seems to be working again. Oh well.

the todster (the todster), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 16:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I tried signing up several times but nothing happens. Not that it matters too much...I'd rather not have the Department of Defense possessing even more information about me.
