The best bad actor of all time was probably Charlton Heston.

his total inability to transmit a recognizable human emotion through the screen while being the romantic lead of a movie, in fact he's pretty much in every scene is really incredible, to say nothing of his... attempts(?) to play off kirsten dunst's lethal overdoses of quirk

i fucking love elizabethtown for the record, nothing like it!!!!

My pick: I can't watch Ben Mendelsohn in anything. He oozes falsity.

Byrne is good in dead man but he’s only in it for like a second and gets killed immediately. He dies good, tho

No I don’t wanna name names, she’s cool got good politics she’s just a stinky actor is all

Who was established as #2? Keira in the end?

Bloom's number 2! One was Daniel Radcliffe

The bar is Bloom. Watch The Year My Voice Broke, The Big Steal, or Idiot Box.

I mean as your unnamed stinky actor who hasn’t been in a lot of things; has good politics; Canadian.

No she’s American, not the best politics, but good, Sarah Polley good in everything btw just a hard ray of light

your (correct) use of pronouns

Not quite sure what you mean.

I was probably pretty vague; I meant that Weaving was the best part of the film, imho.

― immodesty blaise (jimbeaux)

oh, just that the matrix was directed by two women - once i realized you were talking about weaving it was pretty clear that you weren't talking about the film's directors

some of y’all have never seen elizabethtown and it shows

i don't have to watch it; i've been to e-town. what a terrible, depressing place. i'm glad my friend was able to get out.

I liked Byrne in The Usual Suspects. He was good in Jindabyne too, where his drear is put to good use.

My vote, even though I quite like him on screen, is Michael Caine.

I would prefer not to. (Chinaski), Friday, 29 December 2023 20:15 (four months ago) link

Michael Caine always plays himself pretending to be someone else.

Agree about Children of Men but it feels like an outlier and every time I watch it that section feels like a different film altogether.

Posting shit like “Liam Neeson” or “Albert Finney” or whoever? Not it. Not remotely.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Friday, 29 December 2023 20:59 (four months ago) link

Surely no-one said Albert Finney? That's insane.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Friday, 29 December 2023 21:04 (four months ago) link

Neeson is a fitting third-worst.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 29 December 2023 21:15 (four months ago) link

Ohhhh ok. #1 is Daniel Radcliffe? With Rupert Grint sitting right there? I don’t remember much about the HP series except “the fourth movie was really good” and “Rupert Grint is a bad actor”. I liked Radcliffe as Weird Al too ah well

After seeing those gifs gyac posted I don’t think anybody can compete with Bloom, the bar is just too low

fgti i feel you have been kicking against the premise for some time now and while its glad indeed that we can settle on bloom at least

the question of the third actor is open and i think weve a few who have come close personally but i am willing to hear also a spirited defence of the original two

ive set out my cases against both throughout but i think "fails to convince as a character with an internal monolgue irl" starts to cover it

radcliffe playing radcliffe is where the cracks show there, there's been plenty of awful child actors but the misery evinced in his own skin is a sight to see and wish you hadnt

speaking of opening post

macgregor is starting to make me think again hes been a hollow accent for years, as bad as latter branagh but with each i think its simple lack of trying which is different rly

Here, for historical interest, are the nominations for worst actor/actress in Harry & Michael Medved's 1980 Golden Turkey Awards book:

John Agar
Tony Curtis
Victor Mature
Richard Burton - WINNER

Candice Bergen
Vera Hruba Ralston
Mamie Van Doren
Raquel Welch - WINNER

1980 Jackanory spinoff (Matt #2), Friday, 29 December 2023 22:51 (four months ago) link

these are based on a given performance i presume, tho?

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Friday, 29 December 2023 22:56 (four months ago) link

Richard Burton could be lazy and offhand, but he could act when he felt like it.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Friday, 29 December 2023 23:05 (four months ago) link

I think they were based on entire careers? Haven't read the book for decades, but as I recall it the authors felt Burton's overwrought theatrics were better suited to the stage than the screen. They were probably offended at his diffident attitude too. Tony Curtis, though, is a hero and they were WRONG to include him.

Had to look Vera Ralston up, she was a figure skater who acted in crappy mid-century melodramas. In her favour she told Hitler to fuck off, at least in her version of events.

1980 Jackanory spinoff (Matt #2), Friday, 29 December 2023 23:12 (four months ago) link

@ darraghmac ah I’m sorry if it seemed that way! I love this discussion and it has informed many spirited irl discussions of “who is the worst”

And that is a beautiful-sad observation re Radcliffe

we will not be entertaining talk of richard burton in any context

#3 is Tom Cruise

I enjoy his movies but it’s true, just as awfully giffable as Bloomps, personal life as depressing to acknowledge as Radcliffe

#4 btw is Christian Bale

an outrageous re-entry tbh

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 30 December 2023 10:05 (four months ago) link

Fgti…I love you but you’d try the patience of a saint you know

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Saturday, 30 December 2023 10:07 (four months ago) link

Cruise not even remotely a contender for the following reasons:

1) Magnolia: I can’t find whatever post I made about why this was such a great film but tl;dr Cruise is a big part of it. It definitely hits different knowing more about him offscreen in 2023 than it did in 1999 (or 2002 when I first saw it on TV). Anyway he is the perfect actor to give Frank TJ Mackey that touch of glittering menace barely papering over a broken child; his breakdown at his dad’s bedside has stuck with me through the years. And it passes the “internal life test” quite easily; he regresses from being this absolute monster to being an absolute shell in doublequick time and it’s electric imo.

2) Also, Collateral. He should always play villains!

Someone else can argue Bale, I don’t give a fuck about him tbh

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Saturday, 30 December 2023 10:12 (four months ago) link

cruise charisma alone is movie star disqualifier, hes also played light comedy paperthin mean guys too well forever to get into this mix, before you get into the exceptions above

cruise on the oprah couch and all that i can see why hed get into your head but we are itt looking at the nominees high points and saying if they can do that- even once, briefly- then imo theyre not in contention

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 30 December 2023 12:20 (four months ago) link

bale?

star wars bit in that dragon caper, out

close encounters of the third knid (darraghmac), Saturday, 30 December 2023 12:20 (four months ago) link

bale playing rich white arrongance is an interesting study tho

memes dont really save his turn in american psycho but that whole effort is tonally weird

if his career average was the same performance in shaft then hed be a worthy nominee here

his wayne is boring but, crucially imo, his playing brattish wayne is a lot of fun
