disappointed that the beastie boys, to my knowledge, never mentioned the great australian BIGHT

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 03:58 (seven months ago) link

also want to know who decides which vichyssoice ingredient is 'primary'

i'll take 'water'

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:35 (seven months ago) link

yeah as far as i can tell there are two primary ingredients. i apparently chose the wrong one

kissinger on my list (voodoo chili), Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:42 (seven months ago) link

The ingredienthood (or otherwise) of water seems like one of those things that should be settled once and for all in some kind of Quiz Constitution. I didn't even consider it, but see how it might throw you. I thought the Parmentier hint would make this one OK-ish (wiki says "best remembered as a vocal promoter of the potato as a food source for humans in France and throughout Europe"), except it turns out leek was also accepted.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 9 December 2023 15:45 (seven months ago) link

I got bight right because it's part of my flash card set, which also led me to assign it 1 point on defense against someone with a 70% geography score (they got it wrong).

Anyway, I've dug myself out of relegation, with a miraculous win against someone whose worst category is still 50%.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Saturday, 9 December 2023 15:46 (seven months ago) link

In a kind of reversal of the previous season, I'm lower half in correct answers, but only one point behind Championship qualification, having got a couple of ridiculous breaks with lucky matchups and strange opponent defence.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 9 December 2023 16:13 (seven months ago) link

I'd have known _____ of Biafra but didn't know about the Australian one and I guess wasn't really sure what the definition was.

jaymc, Saturday, 9 December 2023 19:25 (seven months ago) link

I need to brag because this season has been frustrating, but I was one of 2 people who got Q2 right yesterday and it was what got me the tie against the player in first place; what's more, they answered more questions right in that match and have 22(!) more TCA than me.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Wednesday, 13 December 2023 16:18 (seven months ago) link

I don't think I am in danger of relegation, but I'm going to end up with my lowest TCA in 20 seasons. Have the questions been harder this season or just not in my wheelhouse?

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 December 2023 13:59 (six months ago) link

by TBA it's probably the worst i've done in about 3 years, so it isn't just you!

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 15:07 (six months ago) link

by TCA* hah although I suppose it is TBA

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 15:07 (six months ago) link

I too am threatening to set a personal worst in TCA this year.

Just submitted on Goth and Gothic and Music Theory.

The Glittering Worldbuilders (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 14:04 (six months ago) link

Only missed one on Music Theory which means I wasn’t one of the umpteenth champs or perfect 12s. Just couldn’t come up with the words Secondary Dominant although of course I am very familiar with the concept.

In the run-up zone now.

Pictish in the Woods (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 15 January 2024 16:16 (five months ago) link

Into the top 50 of Music Subgenres and got all 12 questions! (And I was just two moneys from a higher percentile.) I expect that's the closest I'll ever come to winning one.

Ella Minnow Pea (Leee), Monday, 15 January 2024 20:44 (five months ago) link

Cool. I just didn’t feel like playing that one.

not sure why i signed up for the metal mini-league; i'm gonna get my ass kicked

Ha, me too, but I don’t think I mind that so much.

I created another difficult one. Play at your own risk!

Pictish in the Woods (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 18 January 2024 13:15 (five months ago) link

FWIW I would've gotten at most 2 questions in the metal MD1.

Ella Minnow Pea (Leee), Thursday, 18 January 2024 18:34 (five months ago) link

Heh, been doing this for so long I have a pretty good idea of how many will play and who will do well.

Interesting story about the extinct Celtic language from yesterday’s Metal ML.

The Ginger Bakersfield Sound (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 13 February 2024 20:37 (five months ago) link

James, I dismissed that as a bit of cheek at the time and yet after the first week I'm still undefeated! It's been an incredible run of luck with both the questions (my QvH is currently 129, which is pretty unsustainable) and opponents (lowest CAA).

Selune Gomez (Leee), Saturday, 17 February 2024 15:10 (four months ago) link

nice work, Leee!

good job jaymc getting #1 in the "just audio produced by" one-day. i surprisingly got #11 despite missing a question.

three weeks pass...

Finished first on the Comedy Bang Bang 1DS, this time shared with 22 (!) others.

Feel like that quiz could've been much harder than it was. A question about a Red Hot Chili Peppers parody song included an audio clip and asked what band the song was parodying. A question about the character of Dabney Coleperson included a photo of Dabney Coleman and said the character's name was "very similar...but with a gender neutral surname." Both questions very gettable without any familiarity with the podcast/TV show, which was slightly annoying because I would've gotten those right even without the extra hints.

jaymc, Friday, 26 April 2024 15:05 (two months ago) link

i think one of my answers was misscored for that, it says i got andrew lloyd webber wrong but i'm pretty sure i would have gotten it. i'm not going to worry about it for a one-day though, i got another question wrong so i wouldn't have been at the top anyways.

na (NA), Friday, 26 April 2024 15:16 (two months ago) link

is there a way i can see my answers? i wonder if i had some kind of mental blip

na (NA), Friday, 26 April 2024 15:17 (two months ago) link

oh i found it. i put "webber" and it was marked wrong. was "lloyd webber" the required answer?

na (NA), Friday, 26 April 2024 15:18 (two months ago) link

i also found it pretty easy - i haven't listened to the podcast regularly in years, aside from the end-of-year best-ofs, so i expected it to be harder

na (NA), Friday, 26 April 2024 15:19 (two months ago) link

was "lloyd webber" the required answer?

I assume so. It's a double-barreled surname.

WECIB?

Billion Year Polyphonic Spree (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 11 June 2024 16:31 (one month ago) link

Literature is already a sub-0.500 topic among the entire player base, and then add in French AND poetry, and yeah, that's going to tank CA%. Like I said on the boards there, I have a hard time with French writers (if I'd remembered Baudelaire, I would've gotten it wrong), and my undergrad was in literature (albeit English), and really the only reason I got it was because of Dum Dum Girls.
