I'll bet that within a week of the beta going live there will be a greasemonkey userscript that will allow you to have both charts on your main page.

musically, Thursday, 3 July 2008 22:35 (fifteen years ago) link

I think the charts will come back as everyone is moaning about it.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 4 July 2008 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm. having played with it a bit, i really like it. the charts thing doesn't matter so much, i think, if -- as others have said -- you set your top artists to the last seven days. in fact, that way you get a rolling one every day, which is way cooler :)

yes, that means you can't have an overall top artists thing -- but surely that's made up for by the library, which basically does the same job?

i'm quite taken with it, anyway. bring it on.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 6 July 2008 20:27 (fifteen years ago) link

I want my weekly snapshot!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 6 July 2008 20:38 (fifteen years ago) link

LastGraph3 is an experimental site trying to come up with ways to graph people's playlists. So far, they do have hotlinkable graphs that always update themselves. Here's mine

http://lastgraph3.aeracode.org/graph/mackromackro/sig1/500/50/

..however, it doesn't really show which artists I've been playing. It doesn't look like much at all, in fact. I think later the site will have some neat hotlinkable stuff. But in the meantime, here's a snapshot from March to July 2008 of my last.fm plays in a neat sunset colored water graphic chart:

http://i30.tinypic.com/2ptyyro.jpg

Now, if they could hotlink THAT, regenerated every load, that would be awesome. Andrew G. who runs the LastGraph3 site, I think, is trying to work on this.

Mackro Mackro, Sunday, 6 July 2008 21:16 (fifteen years ago) link

beta still not any better

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 13 July 2008 15:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I want my weeklies back dammit and get rid of that shitty player!

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 16 July 2008 13:52 (fifteen years ago) link

MEDIA PLAYER AT TOP RIGHT OF SCREEN FUCK OFF AND BRING BACK MY WEEKLY SNAPSHOT!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:40 (fifteen years ago) link

What does everyone else think of the new site?

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:54 (fifteen years ago) link

What a fucking mess of a design. Who cares about that stupid media player anyway? The library thing also looks extremely useless to me, but takes up big space. Horrible.

If anyone knows a Greasemonky script to make it look like it was before, I'd really appreciate a nudge.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost there ya go

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

i would critique but can't get the fucker to load

blueski, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:57 (fifteen years ago) link

I also miss the dashboard overview badly. I'm with you on this Herman, this is insane.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 16:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Blueski, seems I was just lucky. Mine now looks like a html page from 1995. Djeez.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah steve it really is slooooooooooooooow.
x-post

Im glad someone agrees with me. That rolling 7 day chart is not the same.
I liked it the way it was before, Weekly snapshot on top, then top 50 artists then top 50 tracks. Cant understand why they've changed that PLUS that player is so horrible. Not to mention the shoutbox et al.
This really is a change for the worse.
And i really hate those last fm arselickers on the forums who are desperate to become staff.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah wtf about the dashboard? Did they really kill it? Because that was the only reason to bother friending someone as far as I can tell.

Euler, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:03 (fifteen years ago) link

this is like when facebook did their hueg overhaul. these companies get big money from ads/investments and they don't have shit to do with it except pay programmers to "redesign" the site

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link

And i really hate those last fm arselickers on the forums who are desperate to become staff.

shit i should've posted on the forum when i applied for job with them

blueski, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:05 (fifteen years ago) link

there is a see who is listening now thing here for friends http://www.last.fm/home

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

fuck them if they nuked dashboard

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

ok I finally got last.fm/home to load (it keeps timing out), and that's a crappy replacement for dashboard. It just shows one song from each of your friends. What they had before was perfectly good.

Euler, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link

I haven't even seen it yet (I saw a screenshot of the beta version a few weeks ago somewhere), but what the eff are they doing? What point does it even serve anymore other than for labels to push streaming audio on you? I always liked Audioscrobbler/Last.fm because the benefit lay squarely with the user, but now it's all about the provider.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:26 (fifteen years ago) link

front page is inexcusable

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

'selling out' will do that i guess xp

blueski, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:30 (fifteen years ago) link

That activity thing is a load of shite

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

Finally got it to load. Damn. Pitiful.

Having the shoutbox at the bottom of the page does absolutely no good. And get rid of that fucking media player! And I never go to the home page, not when I had a dashboard anyway.

Fuck this.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/9416/lastfmnu0.png

This what the 'dashboard' looks like for me, now. FAIL.
Everything I liked about it has been dragged down to the bottom. Media player, recommendations, 'my stations'... all the things I couldn't care less about is featured prominently. Whereas the songs my 'friends' are listening have been put away on the right side. Too bad I just paid three days ago for the renewal, this blows.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:48 (fifteen years ago) link

Shite, that's big, sorry

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

For some reason the see who has visited you recently thing isnt on my page now either. They better bring that back.

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:52 (fifteen years ago) link

what the fuck is YOUR LIBRARY anyway

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

^^^that's really the best perk of a subscription. xp

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:54 (fifteen years ago) link

ha + with a subscription you could listen to your own radio station but it seems like now you don't need one to do that

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 July 2008 17:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I want my weeklies back dammit and get rid of that shitty player!

weeklies are still there if you click "Last 7 Days ----> see more -----> or browse by weekly snapshots"

groovemaaan, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:15 (fifteen years ago) link

ITT, people struggle to cope with change

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:18 (fifteen years ago) link

True, but that doesn't mean some change just isn't good. In the case of last.fm, "that's not change we can believe in!"

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I wish you could drag compartments around like you can on Facebook. Change schmange...I just want all the info where it was before. They can put bells and whistles on the design if they want, but I'm completely disoriented.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:31 (fifteen years ago) link

i want to know WHY THEY HAVE CHANGED MY ARTIST TOTALS.

erykah badu was No 2 and now she is No 4. not happy about that.

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:42 (fifteen years ago) link

and all my top artists seem to have had anywhere from 50-100 extra plays added from...from where? where?

lex pretend, Thursday, 17 July 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

jeez last.fm, you can't just remove functionality in the name of PROGRESS. with the loss of the dashboard and the shoutbox being hidden away, are they trying to ruin any sense of it being a social thing?

what was the point in there being a beta when it seems that they've just ignored all of the comments that were made about it?

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 July 2008 19:00 (fifteen years ago) link

+The top banner is ridiculous (paintbrush effect? hello 1997!) Where'd the quick inbox link go?
+The lame substitution of the homepage as the new dashboard will not do. It's not even close.
+The shoutbox is in completely the wrong place.
+Library? Yeah, whatever.
+The media player is an eyesore. Also, it only seems to work about 25% of the time.
+Charts! Charts! Charts! Aren't they SUPPOSED to be the primary function of the site? They are like an afterthought now.
+Why do all companies seem to be afraid of leaving functionality as basic as possible? Everyone wants to have gizmos and features, usually to the detriment of common sense and performance. That now applies to lastfm.

Sad.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:34 (fifteen years ago) link

++++++++++++++++++++++ the playlist function don't work properly any more. things that are listed on the site as 30-second clips, which used to play in full in the playlist (and still play in the radio player), now only play as previews, and in alphabetical order when set to shuffle. good job.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Also, I just now noticed I had a new message in my inbox. It doesn't show anymore like it used to, not until you drop down the menu in the top right corner.
My last.fm experience has been butchered.

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:44 (fifteen years ago) link

(not that I can play my playlist any more anyway, since I'm not a subscriber)

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

ah, my +++++++ problem up there isn't really one, just a bug, that's what non-subscriber playlists now do, while subscriber ones are the same. although I'm now glad that I never got around to compiling a playlist.

Merdeyeux, Thursday, 17 July 2008 21:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Even after checking back in periodically over the day, I'm still convinced the designers arranged the page layouts blindfolded.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 18 July 2008 02:21 (fifteen years ago) link

otm all those things, plus I want the "Paint It Black" option back too.

musically, Friday, 18 July 2008 02:40 (fifteen years ago) link

i guess i don't care about any of this features. my biggest gripe is the paintbrush effect, otherwise what i bothered with before is where I can find it, plus feels more 'right-handed', the empire strikes back :)
