Classic, because evidently it costs too much to write good RPGs on consoles these days (and I don't do much PC gaming b/c I don't like mixing business with pleasure). But there are lots of good RPGs on DS now; and for Picross and related puzzle games the stylus is great.

i hate them. i had a gameboy advance which pretty much sucked but worse was the psp that literally made me motion sick to the point of puking within 5 minutes. waste of $$$$. when i was a kid i loved those game and watch things though.

kinda wish i still had my gba instead of my ds lite, i played it more.

Hated gba because it had no back light on my version.
Despised psp because it just would not fit snuggly in my hand and the analogue control was awful.
Love the ds though, even holding the stylus while playing is not a problem.

i REALLY want one of those GBA micros. and a game boy pocket and a gbc. all for respective best play of each generation of cart without having them stick out of the DS. even though I DON'T EVEN PLAY THE BLOODY THINGS THAT MUCH. i'm kind of annoyed at myself for wanting them.

thomp, Monday, 10 August 2009 14:58 (fourteen years ago) link

oh, and an og game boy for pure design classic value.

yeah that shit is awesome. I made myself wait to play Mother 3 until I could get a flash cart and it was TOTALLY worth it.

the other thing about micros is that the d-pad and buttons are v. possibly the best in the history of video games. also it's the only GBA with a normal-foax headphone jack!

twelve years pass...

Because the upgrade to Big Sur on my MacBook means I can't play the various imitations of Asteroids, Space Invaders, Tetris, and Pac-Man that I used to play, I'm interested for the first time in a handheld console that can play such games. There are zillions of these things, many of which require considerable setup by the user or are of dubious quality (materials, functionality, etc.). Any recommendations for one under $100? The Evercade looked interesting but doesn't support Tetris (yet, anyway) and apparently has a problematic display.

if you are looking for an emulation handheld the Anbernic rg351p or rg351v are the current standard devices, they differ in small ways but are basically the same in two different form factors. the SD cards they come with are infamous for being bad so you should provide your own, a 128GB is plenty. they can be fiddly to set up but there are plenty of how-to guides out there, and even preconfigured SD card images that you can just copy over and get going.
i have a 351p and it's a great wee device, this site helped me a lot to choose & set up.

Thanks -- I've seen that the Ambernics are admired (and came to that site from YouTube) but am admittedly queasy about the setup despite assurances that it's easy. A lifetime in the Apple ecosystem has probably spoiled me.

Anbernics, that is.
