bell_labs, Thursday, 24 July 2008 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

japanese I guess grill, I have been cooking from the fantastic Izakaya cookbook recently, so I'd like to try some more of that kind of stuff. I guess mid to high end, with some good cocktails a bonus.

Ed, Thursday, 24 July 2008 21:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Ed:

Totto or Torys (same owners, Torys is a little easier to get into)
Sakagura
Aburiya Kinnosuke
Suibi (I'm pretty sure the only Okinawan-style izakaya in the mainland USA).

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 24 July 2008 21:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Ta, muchly

Ed, Thursday, 24 July 2008 21:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Sakagura has the largest sake selection of any restaurant outside of Japan.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 24 July 2008 21:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Ed, for good J- I recommend: the 9th street cluster: Sobaya (soba), Hasaki (sushi), Rai Rai Ken (ramen), Otafuku (fried octopus), and Yokocho (itzakaya). I still haven't tried Sakagura so if you want sake + Japanese pub food please contact asap.

tehresa, Friday, 25 July 2008 04:14 (fifteen years ago) link

ok help pls. wburg brunch: where to go? i haven't been in ages and ages so i don't know what's good these days.

tehresa, Saturday, 26 July 2008 02:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i like Aurora for Brunch. they have a nice'ish garden area too. I generally despise brunch, but aurora has nice non-egg dishes too. For more traditional stuff, EGG on Bedford/N5th is REALLY good - like southern'ish style food. Might be a bit of a wait since its small. It's the old Egg/Sparky's Hot Dogs space... Not as nice atmosphere as Aurora but def cheaper

phil-two, Saturday, 26 July 2008 08:13 (fifteen years ago) link

T., I'll eat Thai with you in Woodside. I was just thinking I had to go back there.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 26 July 2008 13:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh, what is good to order at the outdoor cafes on the boardwalk in Brighton Beach? I got the seafood salad at Volna and it was pretty nasty. Luckily I had a Russian beer to wash it down with.

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 26 July 2008 13:24 (fifteen years ago) link

yay! my queens sojourn is thurs-sat if any of those evenings is good for you.

aurora looks nice. the food doesn't look toooo expensive.

tehresa, Saturday, 26 July 2008 13:29 (fifteen years ago) link

re. Williamsburg brunch: last month I went to an anonymous sort of diner at the corner of Graham Avenue and Union Avenue, opposite the Graham Avenue subway in fact. I have just tried to find it on the Google map and been quite thrilled by how the program swoops akll the way in from a view of the whole continent to a view of this very intersection. It's breathtaking. ... and I think the place is the COFFEE SHOP AND RESTAURANT that you can see at around 336 Graham Avenue, between the health food store and the cleaner's.

Well, this joint is likely of no real interest to someone who wants a classy or high-end sort of brunch scenario, but it kind of proves how good a brunch or breakfast you can get at the most average NYC places, cos what I had was fabulous: bagels, eggs and more eggs, incredibly meaty pork sausages, home fries (whatever they are), infinite coffee, and oldsters telling me about their WWII experience in London. I was awed by the nosh and thought that you could not get the equivalent for the same price in England, where the sausage would be bog-standard and just out of the freezer, not this juicy delight.

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 July 2008 14:03 (fifteen years ago) link

pictorial proof of the amazing sausages:

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 July 2008 14:04 (fifteen years ago) link

there is no intersection of graham and union - i think you mean metropolitan, but i see the name of the place in the window of your other pic - daniella. i have walked past there many times since i live at that stop :)

tehresa, Saturday, 26 July 2008 14:07 (fifteen years ago) link

also ty for suggestion... i'm torn between someplace around me that i know is good and someplace near bedford bc i want to go shoe shopping afterwards. at any rate, i must be off to the greenmarket now before it's too late.

tehresa, Saturday, 26 July 2008 14:08 (fifteen years ago) link

I should have known that my description was going to turn out to be wrong in some way; I wish it hadn't been failing to correct the error in the very first sentence once I had, indeed, reminded myself that it was Metropolitan Avenue.

wow I went shoe shopping on Bedford Ave! (at least I can't get that one wrong.) with Tokyo Rosemary's assistance. but I imagine that you will be spending a lot more cash than I did.

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 July 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

I have been in Daniella to get coffee. Now I think I will try the breakfast.

Yerac, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:04 (fifteen years ago) link

Thursday is very good for me for Thai--anyone else want in? PF, I thought that you wrote "Tokyo Rosemary's assistant" and I thought, TR must be doing very well for herself these days:)

Virginia Plain, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:13 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, I went with Tokyo Rosemary's Assistants, plural - there are seven of them, each only about 3-4 feet high, and they sing while doing handicrafts.

the pinefox, Saturday, 26 July 2008 15:55 (fifteen years ago) link

ty for the description, the pinefox

has anyone been to park side in corona en route to shea? i have a feeling there are places i'd rather eat, but that my friend would like it.

gabbneb, Saturday, 26 July 2008 16:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i have been there. it is not bad, but not OMG SPECTACULAR. big selection iirc. it is big, so there is not a wait to be seated (i was there at brunch time).

tehresa, Saturday, 26 July 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that's what i figured, thanks

gabbneb, Saturday, 26 July 2008 16:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Just had lunch at Eleven Madison Park. DEEEEElicious.

Me:
Sweetbread ravioli with chorizo and a butter foam.
Lamb sausage
Poached Peach

$24 for restaurant week. SO GOOD.

kuma inn BYOB. i'll have to remember that.

I was wrong btw, their paperwork lapsed and they are BYOB until they get their license back

dmr, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:43 (fifteen years ago) link

woah your rest. week lunch was way better than mine, phil!!

kuma inn was yum!

also: roll call for woodside thai later this week? thurs, fri or sat?

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Phil that sounds awesome.

Ed, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:47 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the only places i'll go have a RW meal are the Danny Meyer places, but the reservations go in like the first 2 mins of the day. EMP, Gramercy Tavern, Union Sq Cafe, are my faves. The Modern and Tabla are nice too

They don't skimp on ingredients like most places (mixed green salad or soup? chicken breast or farmed salmon? gee thanx). I mean they skimp a little since hell its only $24. The lamb sausage I had was fantastic, but the other main course options were a poussin (cornish game hen) or maybe it was poulard or maybe it was just chicken breast... And also a roasted squash, and finally a piece of skate... mostly cheap'ish stuff. The app choices were a sorta-ceviche'ish salmon on an asparagus veloute, bluefin tuna tartare with heirloom tomatoes, and something else. I had the sweetbread ravioli which was SO GOOD.

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

where did you go, tehresa?

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:52 (fifteen years ago) link

offal is my kind of skimping.

Ed, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

i went to blue water grill (mediocrity revealed above in this thread)

tehresa, Monday, 28 July 2008 19:59 (fifteen years ago) link

also if you go to one of the good woodside thai places, try to get:

kûng châe náam plaa - its raw shrimp marinated in fish sauce, lime juice, chili, and garlic. its VERY spicy and VERY garlicky and VERY delicious.

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:16 (fifteen years ago) link

ohhh blue water grill.. its one of those stephen hanson B.R. Guest restaurants. very corporate. not surprised you had a mediocre RW lunch

phil-two, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:17 (fifteen years ago) link

at sripraphai my favorite dishes are the crispy watercress salad and the crispy pork & chinese broccoli

Where in New York can I get a Francesinha?

ian, Friday, 1 August 2008 22:12 (fifteen years ago) link

I was going to suggest the Ironbound District in Newark, but this seems a bit closer:

Onoy on the brunch menu apparently.

ian, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:33 (fifteen years ago) link

if anyone lives in or around ft. greene/clinton hill, chez lola is really nice, and the garden is cute.

Surmounter, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:52 (fifteen years ago) link

That isn't terribly far from me.
But the first review on Yelp calls it "tasteless cat food." (which might be better than tasty catfood.)

What did you eat that you liked?

ian, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i think i will go to sripraphai tomorrow :D

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:57 (fifteen years ago) link

i can't help but notice that the "tasteless cat food" poster failed to cite any specific examples.

tehresa, Friday, 1 August 2008 23:59 (fifteen years ago) link

lol. it's not tasteless cat food! the lamb tagine is delish, and once i had this amazing halibut/some sort of white fish. i'm going tonight, will report back.

Surmounter, Saturday, 2 August 2008 00:01 (fifteen years ago) link

went to srip last night, I go a lot because I live 10 blocks away. I like most of the thai in the area...poodams, zabb, nusara, chao, arunee etc. My favorite dishes at Srip now are the sweet sausage salad appetizer, it's sweet sausage served with mint, basil, onions, cucumber, tomato in a spicy chili sauce and may be the best thing I've ever eaten.

I'm also obsessed with their Massaman chicken which is unlike any others I've seen elsewhere. It's big chunks of stewed chicken, sometime on the bone, that just falls apart, not like the standard little bits of chicken at most other places.

dan selzer, Saturday, 2 August 2008 14:46 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, reporting back: it was the salmon that i had at Chez Lola, and i had it again, and it was lovely. it was served in a flaky something or other, so if you're not into the breaded thing, it's not for you. also the empinada appetizers are great. i heard very good things about the tuna, the pork chops and the salmon burger is always great.

+ pear martini in the garden = heavenly :D
