rolling #metoo thread for sexual harassment in the music industry so no one misses out when artists we don't give a fuck about like Tim Westwood and Bassnectar get caught

from what I remember, when these lawsuits loop in a third party, the third party is usually like "no comment" but I guess it's so bad that Kid Cudi (through his spokesperson but still) confirmed the car blowing up

Murgatroid, Friday, 17 November 2023 12:41 (five months ago) link

Also Dawn Richards and others supporting Cassie

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Friday, 17 November 2023 13:17 (five months ago) link

Blowing up the car is some throwback mafia stuff. Why did he do that?

(And obviously it’s the least egregious thing here)

I don't think the "lol are you surprised" tone is needed in a story about this level of domestic abuse.

this was horrifying to read about. goes to show that there are still very high profile monsters who weren't exposed by the original wave of metoo.

I'm really glad to see dawn richard supporting her - this must be a painful situation for her to be in - hard to know how much of it is news to her and it's none of my business really. how much was known within the industry and for how long?

Left, Friday, 17 November 2023 15:21 (five months ago) link

don't doubt the reason it took her this long to come forward was just the overwhelming power and influence and wealth of her abuser led her, someone who was no longer had her own cultural cachet (maybe by design from PD, who knows?), to feel powerless and that no one would listen to her. i'm glad she found the power though.

omar little, Friday, 17 November 2023 16:28 (five months ago) link

a lot of these rumors were in the gossip pages for years evidently ... I think some took them as apocryphal esp because there was always an aura of homophobia (to this day some of the most engaged-with posts about this stuff on twitter are basically some variety of 'damn I wonder now if the MEN will come forward!!' titillation) and deranged conspiratorialism around some of them (see: jaguar wright talking about how its suspicious that andre harrell died of heart disease al b sure was in a coma because he was on uptown records and that this somehow indicts diddy as a serial killer)

but of course the concern w conspiracies is how it obscures the actual shit, and this kind of reveal DOES make you wonder about what conspiracies werent that at all....

I saw some post on lipstick alley that was like

It’s probably not a good sign when the most fantastic part of your lawsuit is immediately corroborated

xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 17 November 2023 16:53 (five months ago) link

Has he killed people? There is a part in the lawsuit that talks about dangling someone outside a balcony, and a other part where he runs out of the house with a gun when he hears suge knight is around.

treeship., Friday, 17 November 2023 16:55 (five months ago) link

The level of psychological torture described almost makes murder seem quaint

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Friday, 17 November 2023 16:58 (five months ago) link

Oh yes. Monstrous behavior and I am happy that Cassie is free. I just wonder about future criminal charges that could come from this.

i’d run out of the house with a gun if I heard Suge Knight was around

I mean, I guess if Cassie feels some closure it’s fine, but uh… that ended quick:

Both parties shared brief statements about the swift end to the case, with Cassie writing, “I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control. I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”

Diddy, for his part, offered, “We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love.” Wigdor said that neither his client nor Diddy would make further comment on the matter.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Saturday, 18 November 2023 04:36 (five months ago) link

yeah that seems weird

"another slice of death, please." (Austin), Saturday, 18 November 2023 04:56 (five months ago) link

idk, thinking about the mega-expensive legal team Diddy has at his disposal and the edgelord hate campaign that would be coming her way for a few years, I could see getting cold feet. her saying "on terms that I have some level of control" kind of suggests that to me.

a very very unfair (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 November 2023 04:59 (five months ago) link

yeah I'm glad for Cassie's sake that it's over (if it's truly what she wants deep down in her heart) but part of me wishes she didn't settle, his shit deserves to be thrown wide open into the public (not like there wasn't a lot already with the initial allegations)

Murgatroid, Saturday, 18 November 2023 05:45 (five months ago) link

its already thrown wide open to the public & this suggests 1) his lawyers were super shook and threw a ton of money at the problem to avoid discovery, and 2) he might still face criminal repercussions, if not from this from related issues that might now pop up, and 3) she didn't want to have to go through the process of a full trial & since she'd already exposed the crimes this was the best solution

the speed of the settlement is mainly a measure of how badly diddy needed it to go away, more than anything

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 18 November 2023 05:47 (five months ago) link

but the bulk of the damage is done

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 18 November 2023 05:48 (five months ago) link

Yeah I read this as him caving more than anything else.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 18 November 2023 06:48 (five months ago) link

From a public perspective and in terms of justice being served for very serious criminal allegations, this is a letdown. The timing is indeed weird, I would expect a settlement before the complaint is lodged. I don't imagine Sean Combs and his lawyers didn't see it ahead of time. Of course, the alleged victim has the final say, but money + "I wish her all the best" opens the possibility of a predator carrying on R Kelly style for another ten years until a trial eventually goes through. Sex trafficking in particular should be automatically prosecuted.

Nabozo, Saturday, 18 November 2023 10:08 (five months ago) link

I'm wondering if the fact that the allegations were made public allowed Diddy to settle for less because his public persona is now damaged, or some other similar perverse legal logic.

Nabozo, Saturday, 18 November 2023 10:11 (five months ago) link

not accusing anyone itt of saying the opposite but I think it's important to remember it's not up to the victim to fix the world, whatever outcome allows her to find some sort of closure is valid and we all know what hell women who speak up go through in the media still

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 18 November 2023 11:06 (five months ago) link

This was a civil case. From the moment it went public people were fearing for her personal safety.

That it was settled so fast was only semi surprising; Kid Cudi straight away confirming the car story really damaged his ability to come out and paint her as a liar, which is the usual playbook on this these days.

Whether he faces legal charges isn’t up to Cassie. It’s up to the state and federal authorities I guess?

Someone I follow on Twitter had a thread of Cassie appearing in public with visible bruises/swelling over the years. It was all very in plain sight and I’m guessing nobody saying she needed to persevere to bring this man to Justice has ever remotely lived through anything like that for as long as she has.

Daniel otm, the rest of you saying she’s disappointed or whatever can absolutely park your “concern”. This information is out there now and it’s not going away. That in itself is huge.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Saturday, 18 November 2023 11:22 (five months ago) link

It is notoriously easy to do this

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Saturday, 18 November 2023 11:23 (five months ago) link

Thought about the brutal and true essay about Nicole Brown Simpson reading the details of this case.

Escape, in fact, is hell, a period of indeterminate length reckoned in years, not months, when the ex-husband commits assaults intermittently and acts of terrorism with some consistency. Part of the torment is that freedom is near but he will not let the woman have it. Many escaped women live half in hiding. I am still afraid of my ex-husband each and every day of my life—and I am not afraid of much.

Maybe you don’t know how brave women are—the ones who have stayed until now and the ones who have escaped, both the living and the dead. Nicole Simpson is the hero. The perpetrator is the problem, stupid.

mojo dojo casas house (gyac), Saturday, 18 November 2023 11:37 (five months ago) link

“It’s a letdown” makes it sound like you’re critiquing a tv show nabozo. It’s a civil trial, it was always ending in money exchanged

Tons of talk about Diddy hosting gay men's parties. I think I know about mostly from youtube recommending me videos of 50 Cent explaining why he won't go to his parties.

dan selzer, Saturday, 18 November 2023 21:05 (five months ago) link

is it an actual rumour about his sexuality or was that more of a "making fun of dre in makeup" type situation?

fuck him regardless - I know there are tons of closeted rappers but it's probably the wrong topic for this particular thread

A homophobic undercurrent is 100% specifically about diddy, lots of people acting as if that’s what he’s actually being exposed for

This stuff is what I was seeing

P.Diddy was Usher’s legal guardian. Justin Bieber literally just turned 15 years old. Bieber had to spend 48 hours with Diddy, the location and what they did was undisclosed, but we know what happened. He's not beat those allegations. pic.twitter.com/KlMQG45z4s

she did file the lawsuit the day the story was reported

is it an actual rumour about his sexuality

it seems to largely date back to wendy williams claiming basically every rapper was closeted back in the 90s. i guess it just stuck more with diddy than some of the others because people don't like him?

Think D-40 was saying the complaint about a settlement being so fast after a filing is...you have to file before you can settle so the proximity isn't indicative of much
