reaves shot 44% on 5.5 threes per game in the playoffs so the point about the volume of his shooting is really only related to his role being smaller during the season

he was frankly great in the playoffs. if your guys’ argument is that we don’t have a real sample size on him & he might have just been really hot, that’s cool. i would agree. but you guys are saying he is/was pretend/fake good bcuz he’s on the lakers but when you play three playoff rounds against memphis, golden state, and denver and shoot 45/44/90 with a 4.6/1.6 assist to turnover ratio as a third option, i’m sorry but you are good until further notice. you guys are lying to yourselves. the point about bane being 25x better is laughable

should also be noted that defenses were just not respecting him, and to his credit he burned them, but hes never been in a situation where defenses were thinking about him, i think you could make an argument he can be more of a primary creator based on watching him his skills and so forth, thats fine and reasonable but in that case youre projecting something that theres no hard evidence of yet

jerami grant $160m, kyle kuzma $90m, reaves/grant williams/herb jones $53m exactly hmm idk weird the guys who were RFA all signed the same deal but prob nothing there. anyway these salaries all accurately reflect the gaps in value between these players

anyway restricted free agency depresses salaries a little bit and obviously there are other random and particular in contract factors teams hand out too big contracts like grant wasnt finding a max from any other team but portland, but the celtics traded g williams cause they didnt even want to give him $53m, i dont think there was much more out there for him even if he was unrestricted

it will be tougher when defenses are paying attention to him. he had a lot of those shots in the west finals where denver didn’t even realize he was on the floor and he got uncontested lay ups when everyone was all the way on the other end of the court. the arena PA had to announce that basketball is played with 10 players just to remind the nuggets

i just watched a video yesterday where noted defense expert alex caruso was commenting on the fact that no one was paying attention to reaves in the playoffs, and watching them myself that was also my observation

but its not like its for no reason when theres a lebron ad pick and roll the defense might have other things on its mind

i think he would be overstretched as a second option, i think he’s clearly several rungs below jaylen brown, jamal murray etc

but as a third option i think he’s a really good player. or he was clearly a really good player in the playoffs regardless of the reason — 44% 3pt and a 3/1 A:TO ratio at 36 mpg is really strong production any way you cut it. he gives some of it back on defense but he’s not tyler herro out there. i personally thought a lot of it was sustainable but we’ll see.

nba money is absurd, $53 million is like twice as much as even the best running backs will make in their careers

ok i just watched a bunch of his highlights and thing that stood out was his playmaking and general feel for the game he was def finding the holes in the defense making good reads etc, but idk hes 25 and doesnt have any discernible pop to his game that would lead me to believe hell ever be more than say a borderline starter a 4-7 guy, and if the shooting regresses hed be a more situational player

i think the way he could surpass that and become a real impact player is if he just ends up being a really good shooter, but seems pretty unlikely because most the shots hes taking now are totally standard catch and shoot, tho tbf he did get some off the dribble, and maybe thats in his game just not being utilized, i didnt see any evidence of your kyle kover style threes on the run tho tbf i didnt want the entire every austin reaves made 3 video, also his shot is not that fast and his dribble not that tight and physically he doesnt impress you tho i have seen him jump high but he generally doesnt play very athletically

in conclusion hes got some stuff going for him but nothing really jumps out other than the playmaking, and hes 25, if he was 20 itd be a whole other ballgame so to speak

he should get some burn this year tho be interesting to see what happens, him russell and vincent have some overlap in their games wonder how the minutes will shake out

that’s a good question. who can forget grayson’s run with team usa at the 2019 world championships when he was a fixture of the rotation with some of the best young players in the world

i'm kind of agnostic on what reaves is until we see how this season goes but tbh he could regress and still be a $20M player, guys that size who can score and make some plays on offense are valuable.

This should probably be in the basketlols thread, but The Ringer just ranked Austin Reaves as the 60th best player in the league(!). For comparison purposes they ranked Wemby as 67th best player and Grayson Allen was not ranked at all.
