All individual iterations on the mimir format used in Pop Solos/ICC - the latter two have a slightly different structure - 8 rounds of 2 questions each rather than 5 rounds of 3.

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:43 (seven months ago) link

Deep the solos have divisions?

Jane Eyre Jordan (Leee), Friday, 20 October 2023 14:19 (seven months ago) link

In the UK it starts off randomly with one seeded player, then results see you banded with players who have had similar results to you in this particular tournament - expect Pop Solos works along the same principle

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 14:22 (seven months ago) link

255 contestants, not too many I track, although a certain individual associated with the initials RS (barely) cracked the Top 20, which made me happy, and a certain trivia monster came in third.

Smike and Pmith (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 October 2023 19:13 (seven months ago) link

Seems like everyone was doing Authors Behaving Badly instead, not that I mind, although I submitted three minutes late on that so my results didn’t count.

…and I have two 1DSs to work on for next year.

I see Greg has one too, didn’t notice any others.

Yeah mine is Baseball Statistics on October 16th

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Sunday, 22 October 2023 21:08 (six months ago) link

dunno if anyone else is doing Greg's Online Content ML, but this is literally the only reason I got Q1 correct yesterday:

ok so my friends are nerds and are into a lot of nerd shit so here is the nerd shit i am not really into

the podcast "welcome to night vale"
whatever "SCP" is
warhammer
superhero movies
whatever is the hot new video game, like "elden ring" or whatever

in theory i'm super into queer kids cartoons but i never actually get around to watching them, anything that takes me more than ten minutes is a serious commitment for me

in fact there's a lot of stuff i am interested in, but i'm more interested in reading about it than i am in experiencing it directly

― Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, October 22, 2023 7:43 PM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

oh i am also a nerd, in case it seemed like i was saying my friends are nerds and i'm not, lol

whatever "SCP" is

Sane Clown Posse, low-key and down-to-earth horrorcore rap troupe

(After that post, I looked up what it actually was.)

jaymc, Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:30 (six months ago) link

I'm playing it very poorly but knew that one. Defense has been really hard!

Iguodalai Lama (Leee), Tuesday, 24 October 2023 15:07 (six months ago) link

Haha, SCP came up in an OQL UK friendly last week. We were all saying we had no real idea what it was, but all LL players were retrospectively glad of the conversation.

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 October 2023 15:48 (six months ago) link

Yes, I do appreciate that defense is pretty much a crapshoot in my ML; my own projections of the get rates of the questions has been way off in a few instances.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Tuesday, 24 October 2023 19:18 (six months ago) link

RTFQ, Leee.

Iguodalai Lama (Leee), Monday, 30 October 2023 17:22 (six months ago) link

two weeks pass...

It just gave me a bit of joy in the evening to look back and realize that silby and I tied in the Wodehouse 1DS.

Last place!

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Thursday, 30 November 2023 18:32 (five months ago) link

I've stumbled out of the gate, too -- currently in 20th.

jaymc, Thursday, 30 November 2023 18:33 (five months ago) link

yesterday's presidents question was a+ trivia imo

mookieproof, Friday, 1 December 2023 01:48 (five months ago) link

also honestly every single answer today should have been 'henry kissinger' with the questions being 'who dated marlo thomas' 'who suborned the paris peace talks' 'who killed the most people' etc

mookieproof, Friday, 1 December 2023 05:44 (five months ago) link

i was just thinking that this season's questions seem easier than usual so far, or at least more in my wheelhouse - feels like a lot more pop culture stuff than usual

na (NA), Friday, 1 December 2023 14:08 (five months ago) link

though that probably means the rest of the season will be all classical music and ancient geography

na (NA), Friday, 1 December 2023 14:09 (five months ago) link

disappointed that the beastie boys, to my knowledge, never mentioned the great australian BIGHT

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 03:58 (five months ago) link

also want to know who decides which vichyssoice ingredient is 'primary'

i'll take 'water'

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:35 (five months ago) link

yeah as far as i can tell there are two primary ingredients. i apparently chose the wrong one

kissinger on my list (voodoo chili), Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:42 (five months ago) link

The ingredienthood (or otherwise) of water seems like one of those things that should be settled once and for all in some kind of Quiz Constitution. I didn't even consider it, but see how it might throw you. I thought the Parmentier hint would make this one OK-ish (wiki says "best remembered as a vocal promoter of the potato as a food source for humans in France and throughout Europe"), except it turns out leek was also accepted.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 9 December 2023 15:45 (five months ago) link

I got bight right because it's part of my flash card set, which also led me to assign it 1 point on defense against someone with a 70% geography score (they got it wrong).

Anyway, I've dug myself out of relegation, with a miraculous win against someone whose worst category is still 50%.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Saturday, 9 December 2023 15:46 (five months ago) link

In a kind of reversal of the previous season, I'm lower half in correct answers, but only one point behind Championship qualification, having got a couple of ridiculous breaks with lucky matchups and strange opponent defence.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 9 December 2023 16:13 (five months ago) link

I'd have known _____ of Biafra but didn't know about the Australian one and I guess wasn't really sure what the definition was.

jaymc, Saturday, 9 December 2023 19:25 (five months ago) link

I need to brag because this season has been frustrating, but I was one of 2 people who got Q2 right yesterday and it was what got me the tie against the player in first place; what's more, they answered more questions right in that match and have 22(!) more TCA than me.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Wednesday, 13 December 2023 16:18 (five months ago) link

I don't think I am in danger of relegation, but I'm going to end up with my lowest TCA in 20 seasons. Have the questions been harder this season or just not in my wheelhouse?

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 December 2023 13:59 (five months ago) link

by TBA it's probably the worst i've done in about 3 years, so it isn't just you!

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 15:07 (five months ago) link

by TCA* hah although I suppose it is TBA

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 15:07 (five months ago) link

I too am threatening to set a personal worst in TCA this year.

Rimbaud: First Blood (Leee), Tuesday, 19 December 2023 17:45 (five months ago) link

My latest 1DS is up in beta and there are still lots of testing slots if your are not going to play;)

Just submitted on Goth and Gothic and Music Theory.

The Glittering Worldbuilders (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 9 January 2024 14:04 (four months ago) link

Only missed one on Music Theory which means I wasn’t one of the umpteenth champs or perfect 12s. Just couldn’t come up with the words Secondary Dominant although of course I am very familiar with the concept.

Into the top 50 of Music Subgenres and got all 12 questions! (And I was just two moneys from a higher percentile.) I expect that's the closest I'll ever come to winning one.

Ella Minnow Pea (Leee), Monday, 15 January 2024 20:44 (four months ago) link

Cool. I just didn’t feel like playing that one.

Pictish in the Woods (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 18 January 2024 11:55 (four months ago) link

I created another difficult one. Play at your own risk!

Pictish in the Woods (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 18 January 2024 13:15 (four months ago) link

FWIW I would've gotten at most 2 questions in the metal MD1.

Ella Minnow Pea (Leee), Thursday, 18 January 2024 18:34 (four months ago) link

Heh, been doing this for so long I have a pretty good idea of how many will play and who will do well.
