Very probably, but at least here in CA, I think they've overbuilt the infrastructure - a lot of the legal cannabis business is really in the dregs now, it's a tough business

Yeah, that's the way generally with new markets. It will evolve eventually. I've been happy with my two experiences here in SoCal this week, one in Westwood and the other in Desert Hot Springs.

just wild that it still remains illegal where I live, even though thanks to the farm bill you can get all sorts of edibles which contain THC but at amounts that are just under the legal limit, which even at 0.3% still allows you to make some insanely potent stuff

frogbs, Wednesday, 4 October 2023 23:01 (seven months ago) link

Like most drugs (I guess), weed affects different people differently. I can't function high. I mean, to the point where I can't even focus enough to read a page. And I often get feelings of paranoia. So, it's not for me, and I don't feel like I'm missing out.

If you smoke or take gummies, you can get the right stuff. It's so easy these days. The wrong kind can bring on the paranoia; this no longer happens.

when smoking yeah the strain can make a huge difference but I'm not totally convinced with edibles

xp I get that, I'm just not motivated to try anything. I stopped drinking seven years ago, I really don't miss being impaired.

The strain stuff is all myth IIRC - relative levels of THC to other cannabinoids makes a difference but since 99% of weed sold is high THC/low everything else, the couch lock vs. energetic is all in your head maaaaaaaaaan.

papal hotwife (milo z), Wednesday, 4 October 2023 23:33 (seven months ago) link

Yeah, otm.

like jogging and its attendant runner's high

There's a huge psychological component to this, and cannabis. I listened to a long podcast about serotonin, and apparently the runner's high is backed up by data, but with a catch: it only happens if you already like running. That is, if you don't like running and are doing it under duress, just to get it done (like I do it, sometimes), no evidence of a runner's high, but if you are really into running, then it kicks in. I think the same is true for strains of weed, method of consumption, etc; the ritual and expectations and context are part of the experience. Kind of like those experiments where they give people non-alcoholic beer or wine and tell them its alcoholic and they behave accordingly.

So I don't think there's a definitive "this makes you happy" or "this makes you sleepy" or "this makes you creative" or "this makes you paranoid," and so on. I think there are a lot of factors at work.

A wide spectrum exists b/w couch-lock and energetic.

Not really accurate in my experience. Some strains have the effect of more paranoia, some more euphoric. In terms of active compounds just for starters there’s the difference between THC-A and THC-B, I think there’s a lot left to uncover about the activity of cannabis. (Also low doses of other compounds could still have significant effects, not saying there’s some LSD equivalent in weed that’s undiscovered but just look at how potent acid is compared to other drugs — think micrograms vs milligrams).

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 5 October 2023 00:49 (seven months ago) link

One of my worst ever weed experiences was watching the 2016 VP debate high. I was convinced everyone around me, and maybe even the people on TV, could hear my thoughts. In fact, that may be the last time I smoked.

Not sure I'm gonna blame that one completely on weed, though.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 5 October 2023 00:50 (seven months ago) link

I also had this enormous sense of doom. Again, probably not the weed.

Agreed. Been into 'legal weed' since it became legal wherever i live, and I've never noticed huge differences between strains. I also have ungodly tolerance because I'm essentially a 24/7 smoker when I'm at home, so I've ruined the whole thing anyway.

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 5 October 2023 01:11 (seven months ago) link

yeah, I'm just not seeing how the range thing is a myth.

When they pull out the menu at the Apple Weed Store it's almost all 20% THC, negligible amounts of other cannabinoids. Given two joints that are high in THC and low in everything else, is it more likely that there's an unknown factor making them noticeably different or is it the weed sommelier telling you Orange Skunkshine will really get you going?

It's all of a piece with 'tequila makes me horny but whiskey makes me sad' or my friends at 18 who were absolutely sure that some ecstasy we were getting was 'heroin based' because it was chill (and not because we were taking it at an apartment and listening to Chet Baker instead of rolling at a club).

papal hotwife (milo z), Thursday, 5 October 2023 01:30 (seven months ago) link

well as Josh alludes to I think mindset and where you are plays a big role. if you're nervous about an upcoming election getting high and watching a debate sounds like a nightmare.

not gonna claim that all 7000 strains of weed have their own unique profile but I can tell the difference between an indica and sativa. maybe not in edibles though.

be careful out there

extremely rare, but I did a friend a favor and picked up her 20ish year old kid from the hospital. poor guy has cannabinoid hyperemesis, which to be fair is very rare and I think was both a genetic component and the way too high proof shit from the beginning issue. he was just getting iv anti-nausea meds and it’s a rough situation for someone that young

as for milo’s comment about high thc/low other cannabinoids, I think that’s off for the states that are delving into beverages/edibles first. the justification I’ve seen is that the industrial hemp extract thc is just harsh, but all the drinks are at most equal thc/cbd and most have double or triple the cbd to thc

I moved out of Boston about a month before this happened. Will be so weird to see the first time I go back. I had a medical card before that for a few years but I've never seen the recreational stores or billboards etc. Going from having a medical card to having a text a dude who shows up in fake pizza delivery gear was something else.

I can usually tell the diff between sativa and indica. I like both but it's nice to be able to choose if I know I have stuff to do.

How long do you need to abstain for a tolerance break? The last edible I had was 50mg. I have the tolerance of a pothead elephant. :/

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 10:33 (seven months ago) link

I can't tell a difference between strains, but you know, just an anecdote.

I had been a daily user for the last couple of years and it was taking 50mg+ every day to get me to where I wanted to be. Primarily gummies, but had switched to full spectrum hash oil to get the most bang for my buck. But I kept squirting more and more on my daily graham cracker.

Have taken a break for the last 25 days, not sure how much longer I'll go. My understanding is that you don't have to go too long to get the tolerance back down, but I've never done this before.

My sleep has been terrible for the last 25 days.

Jeff, Thursday, 5 October 2023 10:49 (seven months ago) link

Honestly that's the thing I'd be worried about most - sleep. Idk maybe I'll just cut way back for a bit and only smoke right before bed. We'll see.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 10:57 (seven months ago) link

I think it's really interesting that so many people say they can't tell the diff between strains. I wonder if it's because there are a lot of hybrids?

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 10:59 (seven months ago) link

Probably due in part to me barely paying attention to the strain. It all got me where I wanted to go.

Jeff, Thursday, 5 October 2023 11:02 (seven months ago) link

I definitely get different effects from different edibles, I don't know if this is just different strains or because they are made with different extracts i.e. BHO vs distillate vs FECO etc or because of ratio of THC to CBD or CBG. probably some combination of all the above.

I have boiled sweets which I can eat several of and I just get a head high and can still function and do things, and chocolate fudge which is total couch lock but really nice, and THC syrup which is somewhere between those 2 extremes. talking to other people who get the same stuff, there is a pretty wide range in how this hits everyone, some people get pretty fucked up on a couple of the boiled sweets, but can take much more syrup than I can. definitely affects different people differently.

this is all much better than when all I could get was random shitty skunk on the street. wish it was legal here though, it's still a bit precarious, if the person I get this from quits or gets busted then I'm back to shitty skunk again

"not gonna claim that all 7000 strains of weed have their own unique profile but I can tell the difference between an indica and sativa. maybe not in edibles though."

i only take edibles and i stay away from straight indica ones because of their effect on me. i buy hybrids or sativa. i only take them at night. and sativa does make me feel less wasted and more speedy which i enjoy. some indica can make me really bummed out. sativa never does this.

it helps that now people are actually starting to give you more info on their packaging. i think most edibles used to be whatever they swept off of the floor but its different now. and they used to be less consistent. but there are companies now that JUST make large amounts of edibles and distillates, etc. Keva and Wana are big ones i trust. (both companies run by women too, i think...?) the Keva Camino gummies are....just way better that most others. it's like taking a real drug! they are clean like a good drug should be.

but everything can effect how you feel on them. how much you've eaten, how tired you are, etc.
i think edibles are a good alternative to smoking and even other drugs. you don't have to take a lot. i can take three puffs of today's pot and be really really stoned for hours. i can take 2 or 3 gummies if i want and just be fine. relaxed. not tired after i take them, etc.

daily users with a high tolerance, are you using more than once a day? Im getting high nearly every day after the kids go to bed and my tolerance has only gone up a little. but I try to switch it up frequently between smoking and edibles

frogbs, Thursday, 5 October 2023 13:39 (seven months ago) link

I started using marijuana again this summer after 1.5 years of complete sobriety from weed and booze. I don't intend on returning to alcohol, but so far the herb has been gentle to me.

During my previous usage, I stuck to sativas or sativa-dominant hybrids until the year before I quit everything. Then I decided to just try out an indica to see if it would be as different as they are rumored to be. And because I typically buy ounces and use them to make my own batches of edibles, which last me months, once I bought the indica, I was locked into it for a while.

During that time, I got as close as I acn come to depression. When I ate edibles, I'd be down for the count. My anxiety would be ratcheted up, just playing awful thought movies in my head. My adhd during the day (when not using) got a lot worse.

But there are other factors in my life that may have contributed to that. Daily drinking in conjunction with the weed. I had covid immediately prior to the switch and I've wondered if there were possibly lingering neurological symptoms. This was in general a period when I wasn't getting enough exercise, as well. So I definitely don't blame my troubles on the strain switch, but the change seemed sharp at the time.

Now that it's legal in Maryland, I've just been buying gummies (including the companies skot mentioned). I've found that it's very useful to me to be able to visualize my approximate dose (the less THC, the better for me, I think) rather than trying to guess when I dip my spoon into a batch of homemade thc coconut oil. It's cool because I can specify gummies with a ratio of 20 mg CBD to 2 mg THC, although once the dispensary messed up and sold me a 20:10 ratio. And that was a bit of a surprise, but I just ended up cutting them into smaller pieces. Problem solved.

peace, man, Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:04 (seven months ago) link

x-post Yes. I don't have kids so don't need to wait for anyone to go to bed which means there is more time in the evening etc. What I need to do is set a rule where I don't smoke before a certain time. Not for any other reason than shit's expensive and mama needs some new fall clothes!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Thursday, 5 October 2023 14:26 (seven months ago) link

Yeah, I never waited for the kid to go to bed. She’s 9 and knows about cannabis and her parents using it, primarily for medicinal purposes. She gets more offended when she sees me drinking a beer.

So I would typically start on the way home from work. Early afternoon on weekends. Never been a morning user.

I was shocked by how cheap really good weed is in the NYC weed shops. When I compare with what I used to pay one of those guys who'd come around with a backpack full of the little hard plastic containers with tape around the lid.. I mean, I was like, what's the smallest possible amount you can sell me and they're like... this for $30? And I'm like okay and they give me this very large bag of very dank weed. I guess I'm also used to vaping it, where 1/8 will just last forever. I guess a lot of people still just rolling up 100% weed joints or ripping bong hits and I guess it goes pretty fast in that case

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 5 October 2023 15:17 (seven months ago) link

I guess

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 5 October 2023 15:17 (seven months ago) link

yea I highly recommend getting the dry herb vape, they're easier on your lungs and really do make the weed you have last way longer. the Js I used to roll were like .5g but sticking .2-.25 in the vape gets you just as high. also much less pungent if you care about such matters
