The Biden issue is one of them "well I wouldn't start from here" questions. Can't see that there's any younger pol who has the necessary profile + popularity to be a better bet. He has experience of campaigning and winning against Trump. And if Biden can take a big slice out of the coot vote as in 2020, that outweighs younger people thinking he's too doddery, because old people votes seem to count double.

Same here re: centrists, but there has been no prep from Democrats to prepare for a leadership change. Despise Garton Ash but the sleep is deep with that lot.

If we judge Biden by actions and results instead of how creaky his voice sounds, the consensus among US Ilxors leans towards his having been v competent and effective, and perhaps even startlingly progressive - the appearance on the picket lines this week isn't nothing, and is unprecedented. That's not what gets a vast chunk of the electorate voting though, I guess. Am very much hoping Democrats are considering who will takes the reins next, though. Newsom is very good at taking the fight to the media, but I haven't really a clue on where he stands with the larger, or even smaller, issues. Again, in the media climate we have now, that might even be a strength.

see, that's what's crazy to me. you can be VP of the US for 4 or even 8 years and nobody will remember a single thing you did unless you did something horrifying like spell a word wrong or get sworn in as president on an airplane next to a blood-stained widow. Departing Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley:
“We are unique among the world’s militaries,” Milley said. “We don’t take an oath to a country, we don’t take an oath to a tribe, we don’t take an oath to a religion. We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, or a tyrant or a dictator.”
“And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator,” he spat. “We take an oath to the Constitution and we take an oath to the idea that is America – and we’re willing to die to protect it.”

thing is, if they want to rip up the constitution and start instituting a dictatorship - getting the military establishment on board with this idea is quite an important part of this process!

Our military, thank God, consists of a lot of non-white and non-Cis-male people in positions of power who would probably not look favorably on going along with a white supremacist dictatorship coup attempt.

― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 29 September 2023 21:33 (seven months ago) link
I mean, from the Army data as of 10/31/22:
The Racial/Ethnic distribution of the Army is as follows –White, Not Hispanic: 53.6%, Black, Not Hispanic: 20.3%, Hispanic: 17.6%, Asian or Pacific Islander:6.9%, American Indian or Alaskan Native: 0.9%, and Unknown/Other: 0.8%.
― Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 29 September 2023 21:36 (seven months ago) link
I think the combined Armed Forces average is quite a bit higher in black sailors/soldiers/guardsmen etc.
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 29 September 2023 21:41 (seven months ago) link
also possible that some small % of white people in the military are not sympathetic to white supremacists, but who knows?
― Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 29 September 2023 21:45 (seven months ago) link
lol, it's possible
― Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 29 September 2023 21:47 (seven months ago) link
I'm not arguing that every white person in the military is sympathetic to Nazis, jfc. Nor am I arguing that a coup from the Nazi-doused military is around the corner. But I think it's overly hopeful to pretend that the US military is this shining example of diversity that will protect us unquestioningly from creeping fascism across the board, the military, like the police, is pretty well known for attracting Nazi sympathetic types.

xp - Then I take it you're in favor of doing whatever steps can be done to forestall a fascist takeover apart from simply trusting the military to prevent it for us. Sounds reasonable.

Who here said “the military is the only thing that will save us from fascism” rather than pointing out that it may not be a reliable tool for a fascist regime, especially one that has white supremacy as its base. I’ve also thought that what Tuberville wants an all-white, all-male military but the horse has left that barn.
