The 14 or 15's Always On mode should mean the clock is on (dimly?) all night, right? I hope it starts bouncing around the screen after a couple of hours, DVD screensaver style.

I'm currently using a combination of two books (one thin, one thick) and a £9 QI charger to get the clock on my SE. Thrilling stuff. If I type angrily enough on this keyboard I can get it to wake up.

Michael Jones, Thursday, 28 September 2023 16:56 (seven months ago) link

I would never fall asleep because I would be waiting for it to bounce directly in the corner.

i'd like to see that show a random photo from my album, e.g. a photo i took in 2015 of the mole on my stomach.

Have reinstalled Sonoma and have now wallpaper for the Look Screen but not for Desktop. Seems a bit buggy.

The titanium 15 pro looks like the bigger cousin to the first-gen SE

calstars, Friday, 29 September 2023 14:53 (seven months ago) link

one month passes...

sort of surprising that they're releasing new M3 macbooks less than a year after releasing M2 macbook pros.

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/18/kuo-macbook-sales-down-amid-no-new-products/

i wonder if ^ has anything to do with that... hmm...

, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 00:29 (six months ago) link

looks like they're finally getting rid of the 13" macbook pro...

, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 00:52 (six months ago) link

the M2 was introduced over a year ago. it was kind of odd at the time that the first machines to get it were the cheapest laptops (air and the bad 13" pro). i guess this fixes that.

Got a new iPhone, didn’t realize how bad my battery life was on the old one.

papal hotwife (milo z), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 02:49 (six months ago) link

Space Black only available on the m3 pro and max. Nothing they won’t tediously segment

stet, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 10:53 (six months ago) link

"tediously segment" is a great description of the tim cook era

i think this makes sense now that we're through the apple silicon transition - yearly updates of the macbook pro that come one month after the iphone updates. air and studio/mac pro the quarter after. would make a bit more sense for the studio and mac pro to be on the same cadence as the mbps but maybe that's too many products at once.

, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 11:23 (six months ago) link

I pre ordered a space black, not sure if I’ll keep it but always need to get my hands on this new stuff

calstars, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 11:52 (six months ago) link

Looks like they're on board with the new status quo of memory manufacturers messing around with different configurations at 18/36/48/64/96/128 GB of ram.

I guess on the low and mid tiers you get a boost and maybe you can splurge for 48? Real Goldilocks hours

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 31 October 2023 14:39 (six months ago) link

Need a new job, client, or some kind of income going before ordering something in space black, but honestly my M1 Pro MBP is doing just fine.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 31 October 2023 23:43 (six months ago) link

^^ same in all respects. I'll see what they can squeeze our of the 3nm in the M4.

what you say is true but by no means (lukas), Wednesday, 1 November 2023 00:00 (six months ago) link

Couple months back, Ms. T picked up a 16" MBP M1 Max 64GB/4TB from the Apple refurbished store for $3750. There's some great deals in there if you don't mind stock configurations.

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 19:51 (six months ago) link

Good deal
Last thing I bought from apple refurb was a phone which...didn't turn on

Mac sales came in at $7.6 billion in Q4 2023, down 34 percent from $11.5 billion in the year-ago quarter. Mac revenue for all of 2023 was $29.4 billion, down from $40.2 billion in 2022.

no wonder they rushed out the M3 chips heh

, Friday, 3 November 2023 12:13 (six months ago) link

a billion here a billion there… pretty soon you’re talking about real money

why ppl stop buying macs

lag∞n, Friday, 3 November 2023 17:28 (six months ago) link

We got a screaming deal on a dozen of the M2 MBAs about 5 weeks ago, perhaps now we know why.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Friday, 3 November 2023 17:33 (six months ago) link

they're pretty much as good as most people need. Maybe most users, like regular consumers, are still just happy with their old airs and macbook pros.

I'm about to get a Studio I think. My 2017 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth. Prob just get the m2 ones they have now and not bother waiting for m3 ones that may come in the summer. Though I may end up just not getting around to it until then anyway.

dan selzer, Friday, 3 November 2023 17:52 (six months ago) link

i have an m1 macbook pro but id prob just get an air now that they have them with 15" screens

lag∞n, Friday, 3 November 2023 17:57 (six months ago) link

I need to download Steam and try Disco Elysium on the M1 Max. On my Intel iMac it immediately made the fans fire up and sounded like a plane getting ready to take off.

papal hotwife (milo z), Friday, 3 November 2023 18:03 (six months ago) link

the m3 max is as fast as the m2 ultra in benchmarks which is kinda crazy https://macrumors.com/2023/11/01/m3-max-chip-benchmark-results/

so i'm sure the m3 ultra in the studio will be bananas

, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:26 (six months ago) link

yeah my 2017 imac, intel obv, I upgraded to 64gb of ram a year or two ago, and it's held up but lately the fans have been crazy and it's just been sluggish. I did some crazy shit recently of getting a synology nas and moving all my storage to the network after my USB storage was giving me all kinds of disconnect hassles ,and some other changes and everything just feels like a mess right now. A fresh start with a big internal dive so everything can be on either internal SSD or back-upd to the nas and cloud.

dan selzer, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:27 (six months ago) link

prob wouldn't even need m3 ultra.

dan selzer, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:27 (six months ago) link

dan your fans are most likely clogged with dust, but unfortunately the intel imac is not easy to take apart and clean

on my 2015 it got so clogged that the dust obstructed the airflow entirely and it would shut down after 5 minutes from overheating. i took it apart (again, hard) and cleaned the fan (pulled out a big dustball) and it's been fine since

, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:30 (six months ago) link

i had a 2012? that i did multiple surgeries on, it was my frankensteins monster, finally gave up when the power supply and keyboard were going at the same time, rip

lag∞n, Friday, 3 November 2023 18:35 (six months ago) link

yeah I blasted the fans at some point but I'm sure that's the issue.

Beyond the fans...it's still pretty old and ready for an upgrade probably.

dan selzer, Friday, 3 November 2023 19:37 (six months ago) link

My 2010 MBP still going although it regularly makes a hell of vibrating noise. Was planning to get the 15” MBA but I’m now wondering whether I should hold out for a better chip (idea being to hold on to it for many years)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Friday, 3 November 2023 19:43 (six months ago) link

any of the apple silicon M chips will be so much better than your 2010 MBP - i'd just get the MBA now if you see a good deal

, Friday, 3 November 2023 19:48 (six months ago) link

yeah id get the big air

lag∞n, Friday, 3 November 2023 19:49 (six months ago) link

also dan the fan i'm talking about can't be accessed from the outside - it's this part. that big black snail tube thing, which is supposed to send air from outside into the processor - just imagine that there's a giant dustball inside there that is preventing any air from moving. that's probably what's happening

prob wouldn't even need m3 ultra.

idk how many people actually need to edit 24 4k streams at once, on an airplane, or whatever the hell the m3 ultra is for

what you say is true but by no means (lukas), Friday, 3 November 2023 20:19 (six months ago) link

oh cool. I'm sure there's a bunch of dustballs up in there.

Even 1TB internal SSD is too small for me now and Apple storage prices are insane. But I’m sick of external HDs; I really have to sort it out. Is the synology good, Dan?

stet, Friday, 3 November 2023 22:18 (six months ago) link

0% financing on the A card makes these ridiculous prices seem more reasonable

calstars, Friday, 3 November 2023 22:35 (six months ago) link

i want a Studio pretty bad. my main condition is that it play X-Plane 12 with all the scenery

Humanitarian Pause (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 November 2023 23:16 (six months ago) link

The big air is not selling very well apparently which is insane to me.

Perhaps getting rid of the very bad MacBook Pro will help with that.

I can’t do serous, multi million dollar consequence work on either a 13 or a 15

calstars, Saturday, 4 November 2023 00:11 (six months ago) link

Synology is cool but not the only solution. I was thinking about it for graphics because we work off one at the day job and that’s fine, but I don’t think it’s gonna work to do music off a network drive. So I’m more thinking one big drive internal or attached and backup and archive to Synology. Which I’m backing up to the cloud.

I used to have 4 drives in a thunderbolt enclosure that needed a thunderbolt to usbc adapter but one of the drives started going bad and they all kept disconnected and was a total pain.
