The 14 or 15's Always On mode should mean the clock is on (dimly?) all night, right? I hope it starts bouncing around the screen after a couple of hours, DVD screensaver style.

I'm currently using a combination of two books (one thin, one thick) and a £9 QI charger to get the clock on my SE. Thrilling stuff. If I type angrily enough on this keyboard I can get it to wake up.

I would never fall asleep because I would be waiting for it to bounce directly in the corner.

looks like they're finally getting rid of the 13" macbook pro...

the M2 was introduced over a year ago. it was kind of odd at the time that the first machines to get it were the cheapest laptops (air and the bad 13" pro). i guess this fixes that.

i think this makes sense now that we're through the apple silicon transition - yearly updates of the macbook pro that come one month after the iphone updates. air and studio/mac pro the quarter after. would make a bit more sense for the studio and mac pro to be on the same cadence as the mbps but maybe that's too many products at once.

why ppl stop buying macs

We got a screaming deal on a dozen of the M2 MBAs about 5 weeks ago, perhaps now we know why.

they're pretty much as good as most people need. Maybe most users, like regular consumers, are still just happy with their old airs and macbook pros.

I'm about to get a Studio I think. My 2017 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth. Prob just get the m2 ones they have now and not bother waiting for m3 ones that may come in the summer. Though I may end up just not getting around to it until then anyway.

I need to download Steam and try Disco Elysium on the M1 Max. On my Intel iMac it immediately made the fans fire up and sounded like a plane getting ready to take off.

yeah my 2017 imac, intel obv, I upgraded to 64gb of ram a year or two ago, and it's held up but lately the fans have been crazy and it's just been sluggish. I did some crazy shit recently of getting a synology nas and moving all my storage to the network after my USB storage was giving me all kinds of disconnect hassles ,and some other changes and everything just feels like a mess right now. A fresh start with a big internal dive so everything can be on either internal SSD or back-upd to the nas and cloud.

dan your fans are most likely clogged with dust, but unfortunately the intel imac is not easy to take apart and clean

on my 2015 it got so clogged that the dust obstructed the airflow entirely and it would shut down after 5 minutes from overheating. i took it apart (again, hard) and cleaned the fan (pulled out a big dustball) and it's been fine since

i had a 2012? that i did multiple surgeries on, it was my frankensteins monster, finally gave up when the power supply and keyboard were going at the same time, rip

yeah I blasted the fans at some point but I'm sure that's the issue.

Beyond the fans...it's still pretty old and ready for an upgrade probably.

My 2010 MBP still going although it regularly makes a hell of vibrating noise. Was planning to get the 15” MBA but I’m now wondering whether I should hold out for a better chip (idea being to hold on to it for many years)

any of the apple silicon M chips will be so much better than your 2010 MBP - i'd just get the MBA now if you see a good deal

also dan the fan i'm talking about can't be accessed from the outside - it's this part. that big black snail tube thing, which is supposed to send air from outside into the processor - just imagine that there's a giant dustball inside there that is preventing any air from moving. that's probably what's happening

Even 1TB internal SSD is too small for me now and Apple storage prices are insane. But I’m sick of external HDs; I really have to sort it out. Is the synology good, Dan?

0% financing on the A card makes these ridiculous prices seem more reasonable

The big air is not selling very well apparently which is insane to me.

Perhaps getting rid of the very bad MacBook Pro will help with that.

Synology is cool but not the only solution. I was thinking about it for graphics because we work off one at the day job and that’s fine, but I don’t think it’s gonna work to do music off a network drive. So I’m more thinking one big drive internal or attached and backup and archive to Synology. Which I’m backing up to the cloud.

I used to have 4 drives in a thunderbolt enclosure that needed a thunderbolt to usbc adapter but one of the drives started going bad and they all kept disconnected and was a total pain.
