Curious what the Secret Service thinks about these dudes with their pistols waving around by the ex-prez

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:21 (seven months ago) link

They probably think, these are my people.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 16:22 (seven months ago) link

So if I just put on a vest and get a doofy Richard Spencer buzz cut, I can get right up next to him with a pistol?

Good to know

You think Alec Baldwin does a good Trump impression? Wait till you see Trump's Baldwin impression.

He should really buy an American-made pistol, but Trump has never shot a firearm in his life, so he can be forgiven for not knowing what a Colt is

It's of a piece with his saying in 2016 that "I alone can fix it."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:33 (seven months ago) link

A judge has ruled that Donald Trump committed fraud for years while building the real estate empire that catapulted him to fame and the White House.

Judge Arthur Engoron, ruling Tuesday in a civil lawsuit brought by New York’s attorney general, found that the former president and his company deceived banks, insurers and others by massively overvaluing his assets and exaggerating his net worth on paperwork used in making deals and securing financing....

Engoron’s ruling, in a phase of the case known as summary judgment, resolves the key claim in James’ lawsuit, but six others remain.

Engoron is slated to hold a non-jury trial starting Oct. 2 before deciding on those claims and any punishments he may impose.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:33 (seven months ago) link

a stern warning and a middling fine

Two whole bucks!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:35 (seven months ago) link

IDK wasn't this the judge that was pounding the bench in rage the other day?

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:38 (seven months ago) link

Yeah. Iirc, this call for summary judgement came about because the fraud was so blatant the prosecution basically argued to the judge that a trial was irrelevant, since no one disagreed on the facts. Apparently (again, if I was reading correctly) this kind of ruling is relatively rare.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:38 (seven months ago) link

Pretty much. It's why they were desperately trying to get him thrown off the case too, I think they read the tea leaves.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:39 (seven months ago) link

Oh looks like Engoron sanctioned Trump's lawyers too!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:47 (seven months ago) link

Wait, this judgement also orders the Trump Org and all its LLCs ... dissolved?

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:54 (seven months ago) link

From MSN:

"The documents here clearly contain fraudulent valuations that defendants used in business," Engoron wrote in his ruling, in which he ordered the defendants' New York business certificates canceled. He ordered that within 10 days, they must recommend potential independent receivers to manage the dissolution of the canceled LLCs.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:56 (seven months ago) link

Same MSN story:

Engoron also ruled Tuesday on a separate motion by the New York attorney general seeking sanctions against Trump's legal team for repeatedly making arguments Engoron and other courts had already rejected. Engoron ruled in the attorney general's favor, fining five attorneys $7,500 each.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 20:59 (seven months ago) link

In addition to finding that Trump committed fraud, the judge canceled the certificates of various Trump businesses, appointed a former judge as an independent monitor of the Trump Organization, and will appoint receivers to manage the canceled LLCs.

This is a pretty big deal. https://t.co/0Z4y3lkHTK

I like the swearing:

Trump will visit a non-union auto shop tomorrow, a fact that was not lost on those outside the Wayne plant.

“That’s where his loyalties lie,” Walter Robinson, a 57-year-old quality inspector, said. “If he wants to be with working people who are struggling, then he would be here. I don’t know who he is playing for – is he playing for working people, or corporations?”

“He has to go to a non-union plant because if he came here, we wouldn’t let him in,” added Hearn. “If he pulled up in his motherfuckin’ motorcade right now, we would not let him in.”

Apparently, and I am a little embarrassed not to have known this, but there have been large numbers of whales beaching themselves lately. A quick Google search turns up various incidents all over the world. There is speculation about the reason(s), including some kind of sonic activity in the water, but as far as I can tell it has fuck all to do with windmills.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 23:49 (seven months ago) link

It will be amusing to see what Trump comes up with to say to these non-union workers tomorrow. I assume it will be the usual rambling laundry list of grievances that has little to do with the auto industry.

In her defense, she made an OK, well, defense in a clip I saw of her Maddow interview. She basically conceded she drank the Kool-aid in supporting Trump Inc., but pointed out that if she is dismissed and ridiculed after coming forward and admitting her mistakes, then no one is going to come forward. Though no doubt this is still just a preamble to the public speaking / talking head money train, like fellow mea culpa miner Miles Taylor.
