Thanks! Q6 was, if you'll excuse the pun, my moneymaker; it was required reading for a class that I pointedly didn't bother crack open, but I still went to lectures and it must've osmosed into my brain decades later.

I was a little worried I wouldn’t get credit for PETER MACKINTOSH for Q12.

I knew Q6 because it seems to come up a lot, although I never read myself. My should have monied were Q3 and Q8.

Just learned from the LL message board that CohenD2, who posted here as govern yourself accordingly, has passed away.

I also found this remembrance by Neal Pollack:

Oh! RIP.

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 26 September 2023 00:42 (one year ago) link

I saw that on the OQL Facebook group, we had some brief interactions on this thread round about the time of the quizzing world cup. So sorry to hear this, seemed a very well loved presence in the quiz scene and a good friend to many.

ailsa, Tuesday, 26 September 2023 09:55 (one year ago) link

Just submitted the draft of my latest 1DS

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 September 2023 14:49 (one year ago) link

I've clinched another 1st place finish, which leads me to believe that the Plateau league really is less competitive. Granted, I will likely also set a personal record for correct answers, but in the season when I set my current record, I finished 8th (in the Sakura league).

jaymc, Saturday, 30 September 2023 14:55 (one year ago) link

Kudos! Another friend of mine also finished first in A, can’t remember what league he is in. Okay, I see, Sierra.

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 30 September 2023 14:59 (one year ago) link

i've clinched my second first-place finish! (in D rundle lol)

apparently i was weirdly difficult to defend or something this time around. so far only 1 CA above my record but ~20 points above any of my previous points records

Ryan seaQuest (Will M.), Saturday, 30 September 2023 23:44 (one year ago) link

nice work!

jaymc, Saturday, 30 September 2023 23:58 (one year ago) link

Well done, 1st-placers!

I'm comfortable in mid-table obscurity in A Meridian, but I was a bit confused about why I am so low as 16th, given that I am 13th in Total Correct Answers, 11th in fewest Correct Answers Against, and actually 2nd in Defense. Will M.'s post holds a hint to the explanation: Turns out that it has to do with "defense against", which doesn't appear to have its own stat heading: I am rock bottom at Match Points divided by Correct Answers, i.e. I am apparently really easy to defend against!

Now in that pre-party tidy empty house limbo before a single guest arrives of having submitted my draft and waiting for the first feedback to flow in.

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 2 October 2023 00:46 (one year ago) link

Heh, just submitted feedback to my own 1DS. It did send me an email, but the feedback didn’t actually show up, either on the site or the email, which is for the best, I guess.

There is actually a stat like this if you click on Expanded Standings - Offensive Efficiency

Oh! So there is! Yup, there I am at the very bottom. Thanks!

Doing some 1DS playtesting now. Starting to think of better ways to approach this than I have in the past, will report back later.

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 October 2023 01:34 (one year ago) link

Feel like I am getting better at the giving of feedback for these things. I recommend everyone try it out at least, especially if you are writing your own 1DS’s.

Dose of Thunderwords (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 9 October 2023 01:58 (one year ago) link

Anyone else doing OQL? I'm doing it for the first time and it's really fun and novel (esp. as someone who's never going to make the LL championship).

Hoisted by your own Picard (Leee), Monday, 16 October 2023 17:44 (one year ago) link

Yes, I do (and really enjoy) both OQL and the various individual competitions (Pop Solos and the International Culture Challenge)

Smike and Pmith (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 20 October 2023 13:23 (one year ago) link

I've been doing OQL (UK) version since season one. I do Pop Culture Challenge (our version of Pop Solos) from time to time, and can highly recommend COQL (which is basically Only Connect) as well.

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:40 (one year ago) link

Can also recommend Mimirs Well, Fundaesliga and Zephyr Quiz League if you need further quiz fixes.

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:41 (one year ago) link

All individual iterations on the mimir format used in Pop Solos/ICC - the latter two have a slightly different structure - 8 rounds of 2 questions each rather than 5 rounds of 3.

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 13:43 (one year ago) link

Deep the solos have divisions?

Jane Eyre Jordan (Leee), Friday, 20 October 2023 14:19 (one year ago) link

In the UK it starts off randomly with one seeded player, then results see you banded with players who have had similar results to you in this particular tournament - expect Pop Solos works along the same principle

ailsa, Friday, 20 October 2023 14:22 (one year ago) link

255 contestants, not too many I track, although a certain individual associated with the initials RS (barely) cracked the Top 20, which made me happy, and a certain trivia monster came in third.

Smike and Pmith (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 21 October 2023 19:13 (one year ago) link

Seems like everyone was doing Authors Behaving Badly instead, not that I mind, although I submitted three minutes late on that so my results didn’t count.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Sunday, 22 October 2023 21:08 (one year ago) link

dunno if anyone else is doing Greg's Online Content ML, but this is literally the only reason I got Q1 correct yesterday:

ok so my friends are nerds and are into a lot of nerd shit so here is the nerd shit i am not really into

the podcast "welcome to night vale"
whatever "SCP" is
warhammer
superhero movies
whatever is the hot new video game, like "elden ring" or whatever

in theory i'm super into queer kids cartoons but i never actually get around to watching them, anything that takes me more than ten minutes is a serious commitment for me

in fact there's a lot of stuff i am interested in, but i'm more interested in reading about it than i am in experiencing it directly

― Kate (rushomancy), Sunday, October 22, 2023 7:43 PM (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

oh i am also a nerd, in case it seemed like i was saying my friends are nerds and i'm not, lol

whatever "SCP" is

(After that post, I looked up what it actually was.)

jaymc, Tuesday, 24 October 2023 12:30 (one year ago) link

I'm playing it very poorly but knew that one. Defense has been really hard!

Iguodalai Lama (Leee), Tuesday, 24 October 2023 15:07 (one year ago) link

Haha, SCP came up in an OQL UK friendly last week. We were all saying we had no real idea what it was, but all LL players were retrospectively glad of the conversation.

ailsa, Tuesday, 24 October 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link

Yes, I do appreciate that defense is pretty much a crapshoot in my ML; my own projections of the get rates of the questions has been way off in a few instances.

yesterday's presidents question was a+ trivia imo

mookieproof, Friday, 1 December 2023 01:48 (eleven months ago) link

also honestly every single answer today should have been 'henry kissinger' with the questions being 'who dated marlo thomas' 'who suborned the paris peace talks' 'who killed the most people' etc

mookieproof, Friday, 1 December 2023 05:44 (eleven months ago) link

i was just thinking that this season's questions seem easier than usual so far, or at least more in my wheelhouse - feels like a lot more pop culture stuff than usual

na (NA), Friday, 1 December 2023 14:08 (eleven months ago) link

though that probably means the rest of the season will be all classical music and ancient geography

na (NA), Friday, 1 December 2023 14:09 (eleven months ago) link

disappointed that the beastie boys, to my knowledge, never mentioned the great australian BIGHT

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 03:58 (ten months ago) link

also want to know who decides which vichyssoice ingredient is 'primary'

i'll take 'water'

mookieproof, Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:35 (ten months ago) link

yeah as far as i can tell there are two primary ingredients. i apparently chose the wrong one

kissinger on my list (voodoo chili), Saturday, 9 December 2023 04:42 (ten months ago) link

The ingredienthood (or otherwise) of water seems like one of those things that should be settled once and for all in some kind of Quiz Constitution. I didn't even consider it, but see how it might throw you. I thought the Parmentier hint would make this one OK-ish (wiki says "best remembered as a vocal promoter of the potato as a food source for humans in France and throughout Europe"), except it turns out leek was also accepted.
