leader of an organized group that used code words and allusions to tell the members to do exactly what they did, and one cooperating member testified that it was clear to him and others exactly what they were being told to do. Tarrio wasn’t there but was sending encrypted messages saying things like “keep doing it” on January 6Roger Stone squeaked out with a presidential commutation and pardon but I would guess any coordination he did as one of a handful of people that talked to multiple groups was also vague. So the loosely-affiliated groups and assorted qanon types at the capitol were really waiting for some sort of orders and the most they got was Trump making vague tweets.

I don't know if this makes me a bad person, as I have severe issues with the carceral system, but it did me good to read about these vile, racist pieces of shit and how long they're likely to spend in prison for what they've done.

Apparently Tarrio was offered a plea deal (9-11 years) that he passed on.

The judge has made a point that he's picking sentences between the gov. requested max and the defense mins mostly (iirc) because he's not embracing the full terrorism scope of the charges, since what these assholes did was nonetheless not quite at the level of driving a U-Haul full of explosives into a government building (essentially judge's opinion). Though metaphorically at least that's exactly what they did, which is why they still got pretty stiff sentences.
My biggest schadenfreude hope is that Pezzola yelling "Trump won!" after crying on the stand and claiming he was no longer political hurts all future Jan. 6 defendants going forward. Not to mention dickholes like Kyle Rittenhouse.

yea as lagoon mentions the half serious nature of all this makes it more bizarre than your typical political "activism". that AGNB/Channel 5 movie which prominently featured Tarrio didn't really paint them so much as right-wing activists as it did trolls looking for attention and trying to sell T-shirts. kinda like how the purpose of Infowars is mostly to sell vitamin supplements when you really break it down.
could be a cover obviously but Tarrio def strikes me as the kind of guy whose ideal career path pre-Trump might've been something like parlaying an appearance on Jersey Shore into an ugly overpriced clothing brand marketed towards "alpha males"

trump obviously also said a bunch of encouraging, vague crap but there's no direct link to the idiots who were there, other than speaking to some of them down the road
if he'd actually said to do specific things then maybe they would have! we'll never know. he should be in prison, too
― mh, Thursday, 7 September 2023 14:43 (seven months ago) link
xp yeah, Tarrio also admitted in interviews he had other t-shirt brands selling pro-Biden merch. whether true or not, I have no idea. just an opportunistic asshole
Yeah, there was a lot of that dynamic on view in that HBO (or uh, "MAX"?) QAnon documentary from a couple years ago, where you could see people and groups obviously pushing sinister ideas that were potentially really fucked-up and dangerous, but meanwhile their presentation was at times so trolly or even kitschy that it was occasionally hard to see them as anything beyond journeyman grifters angling for money and attention and who just happened upon MAGA or that particular segment of the culture wars as being fertile ground for their dopey schemes. That said, some of those same people did end up being prosecuted for Jan 6 stuff, so...

if you spend any time looking at right wing media, especially comment threads or call-in shows, the calls for violence are so common that it's probably hard to suss out who is talking shit and who is serious

I mean, we have this historical stereotype (or at least history classes and documentaries have conveyed to me) that revolutionaries and violent political actors are these ideological die-hards but the reality is that many of them are shmucks who love the opportunity to get rowdy with their peers, or are really into a stance that they might completely flip on given a change in circumstance. And some are just outright opportunists.

The Jan. 6 Committee made the case that by sitting and watching the rioters on tv and not saying anything for hours Trump was tacitly showing his support for the coup. Which is true, but probably hard to prosecute.

There's no realistic doubt that Trump asked for and was presented with a wide variety of ideas for stealing the election, that he approved of them, and directed people like Meadows, Eastman and Giuliani to actively pursue them. He did his share by loudly and openly claiming he won and that any evidence Biden won was based in voter fraud. He was well aware of the Proud Boys, Three-Percenters, Oathkeepers and QAnon because he was thoroughly briefed about them. His long term history shows how well he understands the use of threats, intimidation and violence as a tool for getting what he wants.
But mainly there's no doubt because he did it all in the open! It was reported in the news on a daily basis all through the months just before the election right up to January 6th, 2021.
