I wish that the algorithm was programmed to replace every publicly played Smiths/Morrissey song with a James song, because I’d enjoy it more and it’d also be delicious

controversial opinion: with a few of notable exceptions, morrissey is an awful lyricist

tremolo, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 12:14 (seven months ago) link

the "just a kiss away" section at the end of Gimme Shelter is extremely lame and almost torpedoes the song.

Merry Clayton and Mick Jagger discussing her part.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 12:56 (seven months ago) link

yeah merry clayton and the intro are easily the best parts of the song, but for all its faults it's still a powerful record, that feeling of society being balanced on a knife edge over complete chaos. then mick comes in at the end like a fucking hippy and says we can fix it all with a kiss. and bearing in mind his sexual politics as expressed in other songs of the same period, fuck off with your kiss mick.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:07 (seven months ago) link

we can fix it all with a kiss

I think the message of this part of the song is more "chaos and violence are sexy".

Halfway there but for you, Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:35 (seven months ago) link

I agree that it does also come across as a sleazy come-on, but I don't think that was the intention

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 14:50 (seven months ago) link

yeah the rolling stones would never include a sleazy come on in one of their songs

is he disgruntled adrian? (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 September 2023 15:16 (seven months ago) link

the kiss away part is good because of that time where mick syncs up with charlie for this great drum fill

balanced on a knife edge over complete chaos. then mick comes in at the end like a fucking hippy and says we can fix it all with a kiss.

u can fall to either side of a knife edge that’s what makes it a knife edge

if i was standing on a knife's edge i'd definitely be wearing some sturdy work boots so it wouldn't cut my feet

as far as music from the united kingdom goes, you only need to listen to records made from 1900 to 1920 or records made from 1964 to 1984. you can safely ignore the rest.

a couple of major problems I have with this, let's start with the easier one, please tell me five good records made in the UK between 1900 and 1920?

hate hate hate that song and I love afx

brimstead, Saturday, 9 September 2023 16:55 (seven months ago) link

i was giving those early years the benefit of the doubt because i figured their were some choice music hall sides or a really cracking version of "pretty polly" out there in the u.k.
not to mention some sweet welsh-language numbers. actually i'm willing to extend it to 1926. just in case harry lauder doesn't make the cut by 1920.

x-post

Not saying that's the best but I'm sure there was a lot of great music hall stuff released pre-1920.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Saturday, 9 September 2023 17:10 (seven months ago) link

Lauder does make the cut by 1920 - he recorded most of his famous numbers like "Roamin' in the Gloamin'" and "I Love a Lassie" in the 1910s.
I wish I knew more pre-1920 UK music; I'm a big Welsh music enthusiast but I don't really know about any Welsh-language records from then.

houdini said, Saturday, 9 September 2023 17:11 (seven months ago) link

putting this forward as an example of pre-1920 music hall records, they exist in a not-quite-reachable era imo

Formby Sr, Vesta Victoria, Lauder and a few others are worth checking out, but as soon as WWI starts, the London record business stops. The best music hall records are from the 20s/30s, along with some good novelty records and some trad jazz dance bands. Then WWII kind of kills all of that. The 1950s have some great Calypso records made in the UK, then the end of the 50s has some great skiffle records and of course the work of Joe Meek.

Obvs not going to list all the great house/streetsoul/jungle/trip-hop/drum&bass/etc. records from '85 and beyond because you already know this.

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 9 September 2023 17:14 (seven months ago) link

pre-1920s music of any variety barring tin pan alley and brass bands is very poorly preserved indeed, unfortunately.

Out of interest what are some early (pre-60s) UK calypso records? I know of the odd appropriation here and there (Tommy Steele's Water, Water and Shirley Bassey's take on the Banana Boat Song). Adjacent to that, I'm aware of Edric Connor's Songs from Jamaica being a British production (although I haven't heard it and I'm guessing it's more mento?)

you can see me from westbury white horse, Saturday, 9 September 2023 17:28 (seven months ago) link

Edric did do this a bit later, but I don't know of any full UK calypso LPs that early.

Not 50s (1964) but I have to mention Ronnie Hilton's Leeds United Calypso to balance that out
